The only reason wax is priced extremely high is because people are buying it. It's economics 101.
@edisportscards6275
@edisportscards6275 6 месяцев назад
ty for the reply. Are people buying wax? I would love to see the data on that. It seems to me that breakers and hobby stores are the ones buying it - and it sits on their shelves. Obviously the breakers make money opening the box for you - so no one is buying the one box. People will spend $100 to break 3 or 4 boxes of a product. Or maybe even spend $500 to break a few boxes. If its economics - then the problem is breakers. Because all of the boxes are not "worth" the price tag. thats' what trikesports was getting at - and I agree with him.

People are buying wax just to open it on RU-vid just for views
@edisportscards6275
@edisportscards6275 6 месяцев назад
That is spot on - you are 100% correct about that. Thats because the boxes aren't worth anything by themselves. People are using the boxes for other things. And so people with big RU-vid channels are paying for the boxes from YT revenues - but its like retail - wax boxes are a loss leader for them. No one is making money off wax. That was not the way it was back in the day - I made all my money off wax 30 years ago.

I always believe,,, that vintage cards of iconic players,,, like Mays, Mantel, post war cards Of Ruth , Ty cobb,,, is part of American History,,, will always maintain a value ,,, in todays And future Markets,,,
@edisportscards6275
@edisportscards6275 6 месяцев назад
ty for the comment. That is definitely true today - but its not an automatic in the future. In order for collectibles to be very valuable in the future - there needs to be a market for those collectibles. And the truth is that most kids do not care about sports or sportscards. The fact is this hobby has a life span. The pandemic gave new life to a dying hobby. That is the truth. But many of the people that came into the hobby during those years - have left. And they had a very negative experience with it - so they will share their negative feelings with others. If you ask a kid today who Ty Cobb is - they have no idea. If you ask them who Babe Ruth is - they might know. But they don't know who Steve Carlton is, or Roberto Clemente or Christy Mathewson. There's a real bias and blindspot for people in the Baby Boomer, GenX and Millennial age bracket. Those people just assume things will always be the same. Older sports cards are not "more" valuable than the modern cards right now. So what does that say?? If you had $10 million dollars - would you pay for a 1952 Mickey Mantle rookie card? Personally - I would not trade $10 million dollars for a baseball card. So there is a real ceiling to this hobby - that no one wants to talk about.

Well,,, I feel ,,, just so long that society or should I say,, people attending sporting events,,, baseball , hockey,, football,,,, professional or minor,,There will always be a interest in sports cards,,, Of course everything goes in cycles,,,, and for certain people who loves the game of a given sports,,, They will always what to know the origin of how the game of baseball or any Sport now it began,,, it would be the Historian of the game,, that will keep it alive..,,, Oh ,,if I had $ 10 million dollars to my name,,, I would spend 2 million to buy a nice graded. 1952 topps Mantle,,, and invest $ 8 million,,, But. ,that’s just me,,,,@@edisportscards6275

ty for the reply. I dont disagree with what you are saying. But its a numbers game. There will be historians of the game - but there won't be millions and millions of them. And with less people to buy your cards - the less money your cards will be worth. Thats' the reality. So save your pennies - because you will be able to buy your 1952 Mickey Mantle in 10-15 years - when 90% of the baby boomers pass on.

Back in the day, we could not afford to buy a full box, most of us used our allowance to buy a few packs and we would try to generate money through collecting pop bottles and such to get more money to buy more packs. Thus comparing that nowadays is really not so similar but enjoy the banter.

Used to be you could also pretty much assemble a set from a box. The gamblers and hoarders pretty much control the Hobby. The last joy was just buying singles but the surge in shill bidding, that is about to push me out of the Hobby entirely. The influencers who pushed this hobby as a way get to get rich really has corrupted it to the core.

ty for the comment. Im sorry to hear that you dont love the hobby anymore. Maybe this channel can bring back the love for you. Im not saying that I can influence anything, but if all the collectors banned together - the hobby would have to listen since that's where the $money comes from.

Kids of color today are priced out of the hobby. Back in the day, they can afford to chase after the hottest rookie cards out there like 88 donruss Gregg jefferies and 89 score John Olerud.
@edisportscards6275
@edisportscards6275 6 месяцев назад
ty for the comment. Why do you say kids of color? Do you know any kids that can afford hobby boxes? From my understanding, kids are all poor. Its their parents who have money and their parents who decide what to buy for them or not. If you're making a larger commentary that parents of color do not support the hobby - then I dont have any experience or data to back that up.

ty for the reply. Is this from personal experience? Its been a few years since I worked with elementary and middle school kids, but most of the kids I knew did not follow sports. They liked sneakers, video games, RU-vid, influencers and celebrities, and maybe even music more than they watched or followed sports. But maybe things have changed in the last couple years. Although the average viewer of MLB is over 35. For the NFL is over 25. And the NBA is over 26. the fact is kids dont watch sports anymore.

It use to cost $0.16 per card retail / $0.12 per card hobby in 2011 - now it's about $0.34 for Topps flagship. Stick to singles. Anyone who pines for the old days is a moron. It's always been gambling and you ended up with thousands of worthless cards.
@edisportscards6275

ty for the comment. I appreciate voices like yours - because mine might be a bit skewed. I was a sportscard dealer when most kids are just collecting. So I was opening 1000s of more boxes than the average kid. and I also accumulated 8 million cards. No ordinary kid is doing that. So Im just looking at it from the hobby point of view. We used to get 500 cards per box, now we are getting 100 or less. I think there's a happy medium here - I think the retail mega box is a great idea - 20 packs, 10 cards per pack = 200 cards. But it has to cost $25 - not $50. And I like the blaster idea - but the execution is really disappointing. So you spend $19.99 on a blaster and you get 64 cards? You can see Fanatics saw TOPPS messed up last year. thats why there are 9 packs in a blaster box this year, instead of 7. The issue is that it costs $25, when it shouldn't cost more than $15.
