Steve Knoble joins us with a 2012 Sportster Iron strapped to the lift and is prepared to remove the Sportster battery. Sportster battery removal and replacement is an easy task on some Harley-Davidson model years and it is a more tedious task on some others. This 2012 Iron is a good example of a slightly more tedious procedure as Steve demonstrates.
Start by removing the left side cover. Pull outward to release the cover from its two top retaining clips, then pull upwards and off of the bottom retaining tab. Next, the motorcycle’s main fuse caddy and the data link plug can be unclipped from the battery retaining strap. Use a 7/16″ socket to remove the strap retaining screw and remove the strap.
Next, is the challenging part of the service. The Sportster battery negative cable needs to be unbolted from a stud located at the top of the transmission/engine case. What makes it challenging is that this area is difficult to access. Using a shallow 7/16″, 1/4″ drive socket with a swivel adapter and an extension usually works best for accessing the nut that retains the cable end. This step can be a challenge, even after successfully completing it a number of times. So, take your time and practice patience.
Once the cable has been released from the stud, it is a good idea to wrap it with electrical tape to keep it from contacting any metal that may ground the Sportster battery. Now, move back to the left side of the motorcycle and remove the screw that retains the positive battery cable.Once the positive cable is removed, note the orientation of the negative cable and you can slide the Sportster battery and cable out of the motorcycle.
Installation simply happens in reverse, with reinstallation of the negative cable being the only challenging hurdle to get past. Make sure that the negative Sportster battery cable does not loosen when pushing the battery back into location. It is a good idea to use a small amount of blue Loctite on the battery hardware.

Thank you so much for making this video. Made it a whole lot easier taken that negative off. I would’ve never thought to do that.

You don't have to go through the remove the negative cable stuff. Remove the positive lead. Pull the battery out as far as it will go. Lift the end of the battery up and it will give you enough room to remove the negative line from the battery. I have done this many times as I remove the battery at the end of every season.

Right when you’re at the boop boop part removing the 2 pieces from the side of the battery, I was able to slide and remove the bottom one but the top one will not slide forward. Yes, I’m a woman but not an idiot and try to do things myself. I don’t have anyone to do it for me and trying to not pay someone. All I want to do is hook up wires for my stereo system. Why is it so difficult?? 😞

I hope you worked it out by now, but they both slide towards the REAR to unclip on my 2011 XL883L (right, if facing the left side of bike where the positive battery terminal is).

My model always lets off a 'chirp' when disconnecting the battery. Probably by design (in case a thief is disconnecting your battery, a chirp is better than no sound at all!)

Turn bike on and leave ignition on so alarm goes boop boop and pull master fuse then disconnect battery, re install and then put fuse back in no problemo

Is there any way to diagnose the battery without removing it? Also is there a capacity meter I could get to always be able to tell if I have a charge?

Yes, the most simple version is get a voltmeter (or multimeter), and check voltage BOTH with bike fully OFF, and then again while it's running at about 1800-2000 RPM or greater. Healthy voltage depends on the battery type, but if you have a typical sealed lead acid (SLA), with bike off, you should measure >=12.5V. With bike running, I believe it should be >=13.1 and may be as high as 14.4 or so.

Huh??? You take the dang negative cable from the battery. You ain’t going to set your screw driver on top of the battery are ya? That’s why they say remove from chassis.. it’s just like your car… unhook it and slide in new then hook red up then black. Pull fuse on bike alarm so when you hook new battery back up you don’t have an alarm blaring in your ears

Obviously you have no security alarm system on your bike. If you did, the alarm would have been triggered when you unhooked the battery. Just a 'heads up' to unsuspecting do-it-yourselfers who DO have a H-D alarm on their bike. It's a real earful when your right next to the bike.
