How to change the battery on a Harley Sportster (edited and re-uploaded!)* We recently purchased a 2010 Harley Sportster 48, and it still had the ORIGINAL battery! Pretty crazy.
Naturally, it needed to be replaced, so we purchased a new battery and swapped em out.

Dear Blockheads, I've re-edited this video to be 'safer' for those of you that don't know how to keep control of your wires and wrenches. When disconnecting the battery, remove the negative terminal first and you'll be golden. When reconnecting, replace the positive terminal first. Having the negative terminal off keeps the battery from completing a circuit if you just so happen to accidentally touch the positive terminal with a metal tool to the frame, gas tank, etc. Wrench safe out there! (and read the disclaimer while you're at it) - Block

I added a bit of lock-tite to my bolts. My negative terminal kept loosening up giving me a lot of trouble. Added lock-tite and no more problem.

It's not as easy as it looks. Patience is the key. Be sure to not ground the positive to the ground if using long wrench. Also, the negative cable on a lot of bikes are short and hard to reach if you don't have the proper tools.

I drilled a very small hole top left of the side panel and put a zip tie through a convenient bracket hole on the frame so when the day comes my clips fail I wont be watching my side panel bouncing down the road getting run over by the vehicles behind. Also get yourself some strong clips to hold your terminals together whilst they are disconnected from the battery, it helps keep thjngs out of the way, and stops you forgetting which order they are connected to the battery.

Thank you Blckhead. 4years after this video was uploaded and still being helpful. Thanks again. Harley was trying to charge me $260 or something like that to change my battery! So this is going to save me a lot. One question. What kind of battery does is use? AGM or Lithium? Or the normal?

Nice, happy the video helped! I'd stick with normal lead acid. I've used lithium before, but if they dip below a certain charge, they're harder to maintain. The weight savings is cool, but in terms of longevity and being able to hook up to a tender, I prefer to go with a normal battery.

How do you keep the negative cable from getting behind the battery and preventing the battery from going all the way in place?

@blockhead I seem to have trouble with my negative cable hitting the housing in the back and not allowing the battery to slide back all the way, making it more difficult to snap in the side cover. Is there a trick to connecting the negative cable so it doesn't hit on the back?

I lost my battery cover for my 48, it was some BS. However, harley has a new clip that is much more secure for like 12 bucks.

Finding it impossible to reconnect the negative working alone. Very hard to line up the nut and pull the wire at the same time.

Does the battery tender only have a positive cable? I'm looking at my 2020 Sporster and I see three cables in total...two +- for the bike itself...the main cables if you will and one extra cable but only on the positive terminal? This is the tender cable but only one?

Is it normal for it to make a sizzling sound as you connect? I'm trying to switch a battery out in my sportster but it makes a slight sizzling sound when I go to reconnect. Probably a dumb question but I don't want to mess up my bike

You left out 2 key parts, one of which is the hardest part which is disconnecting and reconnecting the negative terminal. The other is disconnecting and reconnecting the battery strap.

It's plastered all over the cover and manual. Negative cable first!! Problem is with this battery setup I don't know how the hell they expect you to do that. That's why I was watching videos!

Hey Blockhead Does this apply in exact terms to the Iron 883? I have a 2018 one. And, most importantly, is it possible for a brand new HD 883 to be drained of battery (to the point where the Battery tender won't charge it) if its been sitting at home for 3 months? Thank you! A.R

If you left the ignition key on it's possible. Remove the battery & take it to the dealer where you bought it, they can check to see if the battery is bad. Your bike should be under warranty, so you should be able to get a new battery. You gotta ride it to keep the battery solid though.

The best way is to turn the ignition switch to the on position and then pull out the main fuse, that way the alarm won't sound and your electrical system will be dead until you reinstall the main fuse.

Wasn't necessarily the 'wrong order' as the battery was successfully changed. Harley tech's disconnect in this order as well, but put their hand or tape over the positive terminal after disconnecting. Re-edited and uploaded though b/c I'd rather people be safe out there and remove any possible chance of error. Just mind your wrenches :)

Hey blockhead I just remove my battery and there was a short tender connected to the negative side of the battery but it doesn't goes to any place. its suppose to be like it that or it mas be broken from some other cable
