DA40NG Spot landing practice ie. idle power approach at EFHV Hyvinkää airfield. Right hand circuit. Start abeam numbers 1000ft AGL from right downwind.
For an emergency landing practice it is essential to keep a safety margin. The plane will abruptly stop flying at a certain speed, little less than 60 knots. I want to have approx 80 knots over the numbers, and then bleed off the extra speed close to ground in level flight and raising the nose.
In this case there are no markings on runway to aim the touchdown.
Decreasing speed (pulling nose up) shortens and steepens the glide but increases the risk of a hard landing. Flaps also steepen the glide and can be used to recude the speed - here however, after setting flaps LDG I push the stick to maintain the speed to keep the safety margin. On steady circumstances and having a spotlanding grid painted on a ground, you can adjust these parameters to aim touchdown on the zero line.
For a normal landing with power, you can bring the plane close to ground with power and decelerate by recuding power to idle, which will shorten the distance from numbers to touchdown.
