In "SPOTLIGHT on Doctor Who Theme 60", Dan Akers looks at how the original theme for the long-running BBC science fiction series Doctor Who was created in the pre-synthesiser days of 1963. Featuring the work of Delia Derbyshire, Dick Mills, Peter Howell and Brian Hodgson at the BBC Radiophonic Workshop.
Then, a chance to hear Dan's 60th anniversary arrangement of Ron Grainer's timeless theme for a time lord, featuring the BBC Symphony Orchestra Core instrument library from London-based Spitfire Audio.
"I'd always wanted to produce my own arrangement of the Doctor Who theme tune, and the show's 60th anniversary gave me the opportunity to do just that." said Dan. "I wanted to partly re-invent it, but at the same time I wanted to stay true to the spirit and creative intention of Delia Derbyshire's original arrangement, which is simultaneously beautiful and un-nerving, haunting yet hopeful; the musical embodiment of The Doctor".
It took 6 months to produce Doctor Who: Theme 60, partly because he was nervous about how fans especially would react to his new arrangement, but mostly because he wanted to get as close to the original 1963 experience of creating the track as he could, without having to mess about with chinagraph pencils, splicing tape, razor blades and big reels of quarter-inch magnetic recording tape:
"To create the melodies and bass lines, I used tone generators and manipulated the sounds by speeding up and slowing them down, just as Delia Derbyshire and Dick Mills did at the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, and every one of the 155 drag notes" (the low, pitch-bent notes preceding the first note in every bar of the bass line) "was created individually. I also re-created Peter Howell's middle eight" (or bridge) "using an ARP Odyssey emulator, the keyboard he used on his 1980 arrangement."
In "Doctor Who: Theme 60" you'll also hear a brand new second bridge composed by Dan, and influenced by the repeating orchestral phrase heard at the end of the BBC trailer re-introducing David Tennant to the role of The Doctor.
"I just hope people will like it as much as I enjoyed making it. Now I need another project to work on. Maybe a new version of 'Journey of the Sorcerer' by The Eagles, a BBC Radiophonic Workshop version of which heralded the start of" (former Doctor Who script editor) "the late, great Douglas Adams' radio adaptation of The Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy. That could be pretty cool... but I'm not going to commit to it! Not just yet... need to focus on making a living first!"

SPOTLIGHT is an occasional feature from Danmade Content, each episode of which focuses on a noteworthy or exceptional project worked on by voice artist/actor, producer and composer Dan Akers.
Everything made by Dan is handmade, hence Danmade, which is the new name for RECPRODVOX. With the ever-expanding marketplace meaning creative content is within easy reach of anyone (not just those who understand the jargon), Dan wanted a friendlier, more accessible name, which splits into 3 sub-brands:
Danmade Content: on-demand audio production for overstretched creatives.
Danmade Music: bespoke brand-building beats for broadcast and business.
Danmade Voice: on-demand audio from a versatile British English male voice artist
