😲 so glad I found this channel - I am doing everything I can to create a healthy yard for plants, animals, bugs and insects. It is sad to think my small yard does more for rain water and life than most of the massive golf course adjacent to my property here in Columbia.

But, is there a way to stop these?!? And where did they come from? Why New Jersey?

It was accidentally introduced from Asia to Pennsylvania in 2014. So far, there is no effective controlling method and scientists are working on developing different chemical, biological and genetic tools in managing this pest now.

What do they end up doing to the trees, kill them or hinder health? Dutch Elm, pine bark beetle, Emerald Ash Borer, now this. Can’t get away from these destructive bugs.

Something that makes Spotted Lanternfly a serious invasive insect lies in its very broad host range, which means it can feed on many different types of trees and crops. The damage of Spotted Lanternfly may vary among different plant species, but overall it can weaken the plant, leading to loss of hardiness and even plant death. It can also produce honeydew that helps forming sooty mold that covers the foliage, reducing photosynthesis of the plant. Sooty mold has negative scenic impact on the quality of human life.

I know for a fact that entomologists are a bit buggy in the head. So I can excuse the premise and presentation as normal for an entomologist and very odd for mature rational adults. My father was an entomologist. All I can say is, this is normal behavior. Just a bit buggy in the head but extremely intelligent about many subjects that are best to be unspoken at dinner time.
