I think the American toad and the pixie frog are the best pet amphibians. I was given a spotted salamander 2 months ago and haven't seen it eat yet. I breed dubias and red runners so it isn't like I don't have plenty of food. I've been keeping reptiles, amphibians and arachnids for 32 years now and even have bred several species so I don't know why this salamander won't eat in front of me. I have over 100 fire belly toad tadpoles right now so I must be doing something right at least. I even breed my own mice for my snakes. I also have 5 eastern box turtles whose previous owners didn't care for them properly. I have 3 males and 2 females who live in my backyard. My fence in buried 2 feet underground and set in concrete because we used to have a beagle who would dig out. My turtles cannot be released by law because it's unknown how long the previous owners had them or where the collected them from. I do release their babies in protected areas though as soon as they hatch.

I think I can finally put into words what I love about this channel so much: Clint talks to you like he's talking to a child, but not in a way that is even remotely talking down to you. And because you get to see his awe and excitement, you get to experience what its like to be like a child again experiencing these STINKIN' RAD animals, but in way that ultimately shows you that it it is cool to be like that as an adult :D

I love that! Kids are full of such awe and wonder and excitement to learn about animals and the world around them. Somehow we tend to lose that. That is sad. There is nothing that makes me happier than being able to rekindle that excitement in someone. Thank you for putting it into words.

Had one for a while. I caught it as a hatchling and brought it home. His name was Bitey, because when he was tiny I thought it was cute when he would bite my finger during feeding. He would almost ignore what was being offered, and hit my finger instead. It was cute when he was the size of a quarter.... not so much once his shell was 6". I released him once he was too large, and I could not provide for him anymore. For years afterward he would come and swim around me, giving me " the eye".

I've just recently started watching your channel and am SO happy you made this. Salamanders don't get enough good credit! I took in a rescue spotted salamander years ago and instantly fell in love. "Morty" always seemed to be out or in his log hide and not under the substrate, he was sure to let me know when he wanted food, and just had the best little personality. My mom who doesn't even like "slimy/scaly" animals made him a Christmas stocking (its tiny!). He passed back in February and took most of my heart with him. Never would have thought he'd be my "soul pet". Tattoo of him coming soon too! So thank you so much again for this video!

Funny story regarding these fellas getting out... We were doing yard work, taking out old rotted railroad ties for the garden and replacing them with fresh ones that weren't going to fall forward. I happened to spot one of these spotted salamanders, and having taken care of many different pets i planned to keep it for a few days to show my nieces since they aren't the most outdoorsy. Well... It climbed out. Had it in the basement, near my large aquariums. Searched for several days everywhere i could, finding dust bunnies and lost items galore, but never a live salamander nor a dead body. It was pretty sad. That was in June. Just this December, 2020 the same year i saw him the first time, i am tending to my tanks and i see a large black thing moving along the wall. Look over and what do i find? This silly salamander, still alive, not looking all that unhealthy all things considered. Still alive after 5 months. Between the humidity of my tanks, splashed water, and random spiders in the basement i guess he was able to make do. So now i have him as a permanent pet, with a proper enclosure, being fed and watered plenty. They are adorable and i am glad it didn't die.

I use to rescue these from my pool as a young kid. I'd often find them prior to spring and the water was sooooo.... cold but couldn't let these guys die. Especially since the chlorine will pass right through their membrane. Falling into the pool is a death sentence if over 24hrs. I managed to save a lot which I deposited in a nearby pond which had some small frogs. I think most of the rescues survived as never came across any bodies near the pond. Parents thought I was nuts but I was a good swimmer so they let me keep going in the cold water to save them.

At one point in college, I had five salamanders, including tiger, spotted, and marbles. I am planning to get one again once I have a place for their setup in my front room. I think my 4 year old will enjoy seeing one as a first non-furry pet. I am also considering a whites tree frog.

In high school my class was part of some state thing to keep count of salamanders? We would go out in the woods and find them and measure them and it was fun. We went back to class and see a blue spotted salamander sitting there. No one knows where it came from. No one brought it back to class with them. We would have known anyway if they did because they'd have had to release it into the classroom.

I find blue spotted salamanders and the yellow spotted ones in my back yard a lot. Under like logs and stuff. I was gonna use some campfire wood but I left it alone sense it is there home.

Embo I have four blue spotted salamanders that I took in from a friend. They’re great! I’ve seen some small ones on the side of the building at work.

For fossorial salamanders, my go-to substrate is top soil, because sphagnum moss and peat moss is a little too acidic and isn't very good for them.

I like how with Lizards hardiness is one the shortest catogories, but for amphibians it’s one of the longest ;)
