When I was a young man I had the incredible privilege of having a pine marten spend most of a day around my campsite chasing squirrels, and the unbelievable experience of waking up in the middle of the night in my lean-to to find the marten lying on my sleeping bag on my lap. It was quite small, probably a juvenile, but you can't mistake those Mickey Mouse ears, which I could see clearly in the moonlight. Hence his lack of fear of humans. I will probably remember that moment for the rest of my life. It will never be repeated.

@@agesadventures I feel like they are probably more curious than vicious with people since we aren't a food (yet haha). When I was a kid I had a wild weasel climb up on my lap while I was on the beach because it was curious about my hair blowing. It pawed at my hair for a minute and then I laughed and it zipped away. Pretty amazing experience though!

Thanks, Simon😁 It as very neat to have one run up to me! I was caught off guard and certainly not expecting it on that trail. Yeah, that squirrel was really upset. I had heard him just before the Pine Marten came bounding up to me. So, I believe the Pine Marten had already messed around with the squirrel. If we go out into nature and we immerse ourselves, then special things can happen.

Haha I love this! 😎 Fun fact - We had a Croatian Marten (Hrvatska Kuna) as an official currency, with the marten logo on it and all. For decades, before country took "Euro" two years ago as a new currency. The name originates from the medieval use of marten fur for trade and customs payment in the Croatian provinces. This fur money was first mentioned in year 1018 in the town of Osor in Cres as a means of payment for Croats. Fur money could be used to pay customs duties and taxes as well. Thanks for the fun video Age 👍🏻😎
@agesadventures

That's a really interesting part of your history! It makes sense that they would use the marten fur as currency. I'm sure there was great use for them. Canada was built on the fur trade with the Beaver being the main animal trapped for their fur. We even have a 5 cent coin with a beaver on it. This Pine Marten was really interesting to see and it made my day😁

To be clear, the pine marten can take down small black tail deer, not full grown adults. Also, the downside of "being quiet on the trail" is surprising bear which isn't recommended. Luckily, on Vancouver Island there are only black bears that generally (broadly speaking) don't want anything to do with people.

Being quiet on the trail doesn't mean not paying attention to the signs, smells, and sounds around you😀 It's kind of like when hunting in the woods. You need to pay attention. Northern Vancouver Island has Grizzly Bears too so be a little more careful up there.

I haven't seen one on the island yet, although I know they are here! WestCoaster gets them on video now and then I think. In Europe or Asia they go by the name "Sable".
