How to spray paint walls and ceiling different colours. Starting with room preparation for painting, masking tips, showing how to use masking tape before spraying trim / woodwork, then airless spray painting walls and ceiling. See how I use the Graco Ultra QuickShot for small jobs - spraying woodwork (trim), followed by a bigger airless paint sprayer - a Graco Classic 395 PC, used to spray paint walls and ceiling different colors.
But first it all starts with a ceiling crack repair - see how to fix a drywall crack in ceiling. For this I’ll be using “Prestonett Flexible Crack Repair Filler” (picked up from Brewers Decorating Centre). Followed up with a 2” (52mm) fibre joint tape to add strength to the ceiling.

What tip did you use? I tried spraying slightly thinned jonos aqua undercoat using the 408 that came with the quick shot and it wouldn't spray it for more than a couple of seconds. Not sure If it was a blockage, but the paint was strained into the cup first so shouldn't have been
@AspireDecorating
@AspireDecorating Месяц назад
@jossywilson did it keep losing pressure? Possibly paint too thick for the tip size. If I spray aqua guard I generally use a 210 or a 310 depending on what I'm spraying. Pressure at around 1200 psi and be sure to use the correct gun filter as too fine mesh will result in blockages. Did you strain your paint or bang it straight through the machine? Acrylic paints can have alot of dried paint in the can due to the way it cures. If you've never sprayed a certain paint before I recommend taping a wall off with paper or plastic and having a play around with different combinations of the above until you get it perfect. Also be careful with aqua guard as it can run like a greyhound on you.
@PaintHQ
@PaintHQ Месяц назад
@jossywilson If I recall, I sprayed the Aqua Guard Undercoat using an FF LP 208 - it was a fresh can, so a good stir and it sprayed pretty clean, perhaps the odd blockage.. Now I found the Aqua Guard Top Coat more problematic to spray (with the QuickShot) - with an .008 it remained a little ‘taily’ (no thinning, I really didn’t want to thin).. so I upped the tip size to a .010, still not great in my opinion, then as a test, a FF LP 514 - still not great.. now the finish was excellent, I was impressed 👌 I got results by using a FF LP 408 (around speed 7), but still tails - but the coat was good across the middle part of the fan.. so I sprayed the skirting, with the middle of the fan coating nice.. same with door frame.. then door, I got away with overlapping and covering the tails with each pass.. I loved the finish, but I feel Aqua Guard doesn’t like being sprayed 🤔 ..Regards Pete

Hello my friend.. you may be able to swap out the hose to a small diameter and length, such as a 3/16" 4.5mtr or 7.5mtr Graco BlueMax hose - it’ll hold less paint, 0.081 - 0.134 litres in hose 👍 check if screw fitting is 1/4” NPS 👍 I would spray trim first.. hope this helps.. regards Pete 🙏💙💯

@@PaintHQ Thanks Pete. I will check that out, these new (sort of new anyway) FFLP tips are brilliant now for helping with overspray. When I started airless spraying around '09 we were using the big old guns and tips and the finish was nowhere near where I can get it now and the spits were often ridiculous! I'll definitely be ordering some of the akzonobel gear and giving that a try in the garage. Thanks for the info. Regards, Phil

@PaintHQ
@PaintHQ Месяц назад
Thank you my friend.. I’m a fan of spraying, so all jobs I’ll spray internal joinery and ceilings.. Walls, I’ll weigh up if a spray finish will suit the project - in this case, nice skim finish to walls, the customer is a repeat customer, aware of my work and likes a sprayed finish, so yeah it was very nice job 👌 Regards Pete 🙏💙💯

Hi Pete, I sprayed the internal walls of 20 shipping container office spaces using durable matt mixed to F&B wevet. The walls were studded, plasterboarded and plastered with the front doors of the container replaced with upvc glazed door and windows. I didn’t backroll and for some reason it dried to a satin sort of sheen. now any touch ups when rolled, dry to the matt finish it was supposed to be. Exact same product, Two different sheens. Technical said it’s a critical light issue but it deffo still makes me scratch my head.
@PaintHQ
@PaintHQ Месяц назад
Hey buddy, thanks for sharing your experience.. Yeah there is a difference between a spray finish and that of a roller - same product / sheen / finish as you say.. touch ups of a sprayed finish are historically always been problematic - especially in critical light.. a Handheld / QuickShot can be handy to fire over a small quantity to fix a snag.. if area is not in critical light, down low or up high, you could get away with a very fine touch up with a brush, a small sponge / very fine nap roller.. otherwise it could be wise to back roll after the 2nd coat / after last coat of emulsion - this will allow any touch ups to be corrected with a brush / roller 👍 hope this helps a little.. regards Pete

Did you stir all the paint up thoroughly before and throughout the spraying? Also was the sprayed paint thinned and are you touching up with a neat paint straight from the tin also is it from the bottom of a tin that hasn’t been stirred.

Hi Pete, thanks for all your hard work making these videos... I've been a p&d for 35years but new to spraying, I've only been spraying the odd big ceiling & doing OK with confidence building, I've got a couple big rooms soon in softsheen, ceiling and walls same colour, should I spray ceilings first then walls, or walls then ceiling? Also woodwork being done gloss so would you apply a grip primer after masking where gloss has gone on walls? Or a good rub down be sufficient? Thanks for your time and help.
@PaintHQ
@PaintHQ 29 дней назад
Hello my friend, really appreciate your kind feedback.. it’s great to hear from a P&D with such experience 🙏 if you’re painting painting walls and ceiling in the same colour (colour drenching) - spray the ceiling in first, then walls.. just watch the perimeter / top of the wall that would inevitably get hit multiple times - if you don’t move the gun quick enough, you risk a heavier coat.. that’s perhaps my top tip with airless spraying - move relatively quick, you can’t comprehend how much paint is put out 👍 ..regarding the skirting / architrave / trim areas, a scuff over with a high grit / fine sandpaper is sufficient (plus a dust off) 👍 all the best buddy.. keep in touch 🙏 regards Pete 💙💯

@PaintHQ thank you for your quick response, yep been doing it a while, from 15 yrs old now 51. Yes i get exactly what you're saying & makes sense. When youre masking up for your ceilings at the end of a project, do you let the ceiling paint come on to your wall to create a straight and sharp line? Whats the strategy when doing it.
@PaintHQ
@PaintHQ Месяц назад
Hey buddy, I think I know they you’re asking.. if it’s a perfect right angle / clean sharp skim / drywall finish between wall and ceiling, I can mask a very nice straight line.. but if it’s a bit ‘rougher’, you have to look at what you’re working with and pick your line (the ceiling in this video was a little like that.. the walls has a skim coat, but not the ceiling).. good thing is, wherever you place the tape, you will get a perfect line - easier in my opinion than manoeuvring the bristles of a brush. A strategy, just like cutting in with a brush is to very very slightly go onto the ceiling Vs seeing a white line on your wall colour - so if the line is tricky, go up on the ceiling with the tape a micro millimetre (equivalent to a single bristle width)👌 ..Is that what you meant by your question? Apologies if not 🙈 Happy to help if I can.. regards Pete 💙💯

Lovely job! Im intrigued to know how long this job took including all the prep and masking up?
@PaintHQ
@PaintHQ Месяц назад
Thank you buddy, appreciate you watching.. Good question - The prep, is like for like in terms of comparing to a brush / roller.. Masking, it’s thought that it takes ages. I guess it’s like anything, with practice you get quicker.. But where you may loose a bit in ‘preparing to spray’ you gain back and then some spraying.. spraying trim / skirting / door frame / door - it takes very few minutes, and it’s far less laborious Vs a brush.. Same for ceiling, you do it last.. mask the perimeter and protect the walls - it’s very quick, then cross hatch the ceiling airless spraying, it’s unbelievably quick.. you’re simply not waiting for costs of paint to dry, where you would otherwise drag the paint with a roller.. But it’s the finish that wins you more work - the woodwork finish is cabinet like and the walls and ceiling are flawlessly smooth 👌 Thanks for your question, keep in touch.. regards Pete 💙💯

Hey buddy.. It’s a FlexVolt 54v unit, so you pay a bit more, but you’re getting more power.. on that note, you could probably do with 3x 6Ah 54v or 2 of a higher AH batteries to get complete run time.. basically just need to manage the batteries.. I swapped out the hose on mine because the one you get, I felt it was not long enough and it’s very rigid to use.. I like how the filters will ‘flip’ automatically to keep them clean 👍 Suction power is good, it does dust extract with my tools, but it’s fair to say it’s not quite the suction power of its corded counterparts.. There is a couple of very good smaller options, Dewalt 18v cordless vacs (not dust extractors), that I plan to get myself - I’ve always found a cordless vac very handy to have on the job site 👍 Hope that helps a little my friend 🙏 Regards Pete

Hello, Pete! Nice job! Why don't you try using a 60cm spatula to putty joints 30-40cm wide? Yes it will require two hands, but it will be faster, smoother and more convenient, in my many years of experience. My regards!

How long did you wait for the paint to dry between coats
@PaintHQ
@PaintHQ Месяц назад
Hello my friend.. approx 1-2 hours between emulsion on the walls.. woodwork / trim is about 30 minutes to an hour, it dries very quickly and I circulate air with a DeWALT cordless fan 👍 take care buddy.. regards Pete 💙💯

Hi Pete, why did you use a 514 for the walls and a 619 for the ceiling? Could you have just used a 619 for both? Thanks.
@PaintHQ
@PaintHQ Месяц назад
Hey Kevin.. yeah I could have used the 619 for both, everywhere was masked up very well 👍 I opted for the 514 just to slow the flow a bit with the mist coat - didn’t want to saturate the walls, I waited an hour and sprayed the top coats.. just one thing I find with a 619 on walls - you have to watch and make sure you get in window reveals and corners of the room (where in my case was the built in wardrobes) and don’t leave any ‘ghosting’.. it’s not a problem, just worth watching out for and maybe spraying in a 3rd coat in them areas if needed 👍 hope you’re keeping well.. regards Pete 💙💯

@@PaintHQ makes sense - 619 flow might be a bit heavy for those reveals and gaps and I suppose it’s really easy to switch the tips. Nice one Pete 👍
@PaintHQ
@PaintHQ Месяц назад
@kevinpower4973 Yeah swapping a tip out is easy - then what I do is drop the tip in a paint scuttle filled with water, then flush the tip through at the end when cleaning 👍😄💙💯

Why this order of operation when spraying with ceiling last? I'm not questioning it, I just want to learn the answer.
@PaintHQ
@PaintHQ Месяц назад
That’s a good question my friend 🙏 it’s much easier to mask the ceiling cut line and protect walls than if you was to try the other way round and mask the ceiling to spray walls (hope that makes sense) 👍 Regards Pete 💙💯

Pete, why are you not using 3M Hand Masker? I'm sure you know about about, so why not use it? You are, essentially, doing 2x work when masking things off with the tape then with the paper.
@PaintHQ
@PaintHQ Месяц назад
Hey buddy.. that’s a very good observation and I get what you’re saying.. I’ve got two 3M Hand Maskers - and in years gone by I did use them, one for paper and one for film.. in more recent years I’ve found it easier to mask a line with tape first, in my opinion you have a bit more manoeuvrability to manipulate the tape - especially the sensitive run of purple washi, I never trusted a purple tape on the Hand Masker and it sticking to the film - I used to mask the sensitive / purple cut line then go over separately with the Hand Masker and a production tape over the purple 👍 just like I do now, but it’s easier to go round with a roll of film in your hand.. Hope that makes sense, but I do get your point, I’m not knocking the Hand Masker, the 3M model worked very well (especially with the straight cut attachment 👍).. keep in touch 🙏 regards Pete

How is the dewalt vaccum working out before u? Im thinking of buying one but seeing mixed reviews about it

Hi Carlos.. It’s a FlexVolt 54v unit, so you pay a bit more, but you’re getting more power.. on that note, you could probably do with 3x 6Ah 54v or 2 of a higher AH batteries to get complete run time (and a DeWALT fast charger).. basically just need to manage the batteries.. There is a couple of very good smaller options, Dewalt 18v cordless vacs (not dust extractors), that I plan to get one myself - I’ve always found a cordless vac very handy to have on the job site 👍 Hope that helps a little my friend 🙏 Regards Pete
