Not only that , but the shot is coming out of the barrel within a millisecond of each other. Thus , no drag from the barrel can impart any horizontal drag on it.

I understand that, and I'm not trying to start an argument either friend. The point I was getting at is that on the back of a box of Federal Steel Waterfowl #3 loads it said shooting directly at water with steel shot you have the possibility of it "bouncing back" and that's what I was questioning.

At 1200 fps, and assuming the shot cloud is about 1" long, you've got 1/14400 of a second to impart as much movement as you can. So in order to get the shot to spread, you've got to rotate the shotgun at 311,040,000 RPM per every degree of dispersion between the front and back of the shot cloud. At that point, you'd make a few dozen rotations between the sear breaking and the primer being struck, so there'd be no accuracy at all, even assuming your shotgun wasn't torn apart or melting.

Nice vid, now we need to see what happens when you give a shotgun barrel porting... OR! even better (better grab mythbusters) the myth that a M2 Browning can hover in mid air if fired straight down on full automatic. I doubt it working, but that would be an awesome video

As correct as he is about the speed that the barrel would have to be moving. That is not at all why you cant spread the shot horizontally. The shot is still being held together in the cylindrical wad when it leaves the barrel. The shot only starts to spread apart the very instant that the shot and wad start to separate which is the very instant the wad leaves the barrel.

Excellent point. It's not like the pellets come out in a continous stream like water from a garden hose.

Theoretically the shot strikes on a flat target from a horizontally or vertically moving barrel would be elliptical in comparison to those from a stationary barrel, but at shotgun ranges and due to many other factors, gravity, wind, humidity, temperature, etc. the ellipse would be indistinguishable from the generally circular pattern of the stationary barrel.

How much the shot spreads due to swing is also dependent on how long the stream of shot is in the bore and downrange ; ) it could be over a millimeter!

Fascinating, and if you analyze your shot hitting the water, the shot string on swinging is about double the width as the one shooting straight on. The near point is much further to the right than the distant end point compared to the straight on shot. Maybe not 12 feet wide, but double easily. Thanks for proving that.
