I shot 1/4 1/4 for years, clay and game, a coach watching me suggested i changed to 3/8 3/8. 6 months changed back, absolutely no difference at all. I stick with the same cartridges all the time on clays, only change for live game. I'd love a fixed choke 1/4 1/4.

Very steady shooting at the plate. Half and half, or half and three eighths look like excellent combinations with this cartridge through your gun. Very enjoyable video, as ever.

If we are talking about a sporter shotgun for ESP i personally would put imp/cyl in the bottom barrel and mod in the top barrel and forget it, that will deal with 99.9 % of sporting targets. If i was thinking of adding some additional chokes i would go with a couple of light mods. That's just me.

I use skeet/cyl and 7.5 shot, good out 40-45 yrds if clay is showing plenty of face, I go 3/8 1/2 if showing only an edge. You only have to break them, not dust them. Close in less than 20-25 yrds sk/cyl and fiber 9's the bigger the patten the better.

Been shooting a fixed choke 3/8th 3/8th gun for ESP for the last seven years. 8 shot for everything apart from if it's right on the end of the barrels when I'll drop a piston wad 9 in. That combo breaks everything from 7 to 70 yards if I point it in the right place.

so I use LM in the US, and I came to this conclusion after experimenting on the field.. I enjoyed your video and thank you but I had to google out the UK choke terminology and found out that what you are recommending as a 3/8 is actually what we call LM.. So I absolutely agree with your conclusions, and thanks again for a wonderful video

Same had to look up the UK vs US standards. I use Low Modified (bottom) and Improved Modified (top). On my semi auto I stay with Low Modified. I shot really well with 870 Remington fixed choke of Modified. So that was my reference point personally, and how I got to those combinations of LM/IM

My Blaser F3 shoots incredibly tight patterns, 1/4 and 1/2 will break most targets, if they are out further I just change to a cartridge with harder shot the advances in shot gun barrel design (forcing cone length and internal diameter) along with the evolution in chokes have led to a lot less shot damage the result being much more uniform patterns . Modern cartridges are simply state of the art with consistent long range breaks an every day occurrence.

...I used skeet/skeet with 6.5's when I started and shot AA at Club Level. I use 3/8's (1860) in both with 7.5's, but use a 'softer' cartridge in the first/closest target especially on sym pairs...works good!

That's very interesting. I bought a Miroku with fixed chokes from Edward. Chokes are imp cyl and 3/8. I've always used more choke and was concerned this might not be enough. I had asked Ed about having it fitted with Teague chokes, but might not need to.

Just going back to how it used to be,before multi chokes became the norm. Just learn to shoot your gun and select the appropriate shell for whatever the Job in hand is. I always go for a fixed choked gun if available, unfortunately getting harder to find.

Hello, a comment from a colonial, if you don’t mind. My extensive experience in sporting clays reveals that patterning from the same barrel of a dopple bockbitzer will NOT provide you with the experience to effectually engage targets at random ranges and double targets from the station. Rather, you need to know what load (from what brand of ammunition) patterns where at various ranges. My investigations revealed that Lite Modified (3/8 choke) worked best out to 22 meters in my shotgun; and Improved Modified (5/8 choke) worked best at about 35 meters. My test and evaluation. Compare.

Worth having a look at the shot in those Sporting 100's, found some dust size shot in the ones I opened. Shot Hull for 10 years, but moved to Fiocchi after that, probably not noticeable at 30 yards, but beyond 50 you need to know the shot is a consistent size.

Nice video and interesting subject as it raises a number of issues which relate to factors such as the shotgunners confidence in equipment choices and what constitutes a suitable or decent target break ie. do want targets smoked or just enough for a score? I’ve used a combination of 3/8 and 1/2 choke for various forms of sporting clays over a long time. The 3/8 has performed extremely well in various guns of varying bore diameter and chokes of varying choke geometry…..including shooting distances well beyond 40m, particularly when there is some degree of target belly or dome presentation. Having said that, I often feel a true 1/4 choke is often underrated nowadays, particularly as it does provide an aim-error advantage over tighter chokes which does come in handy on many (not all) of today’s competition courses. It may not smoke targets at extended ranges, however, it will get the job done well beyond 30m if we look hard enough.

I am Guessing that choke lingo only exists in the UK. I have never in my 63 years heard of 1/4 choke and so On. Always been cylinder, IC, Modified, IM, Full, Extra full, skeet one and skeet 2. That 1/4, 3/8 and so On mean nothing to me. The rest of the world uses the choke names I gave. All gun makers use what I said. You have your own lingo. Odd.

A lot depends on where you shoot, there are 3 grounds relatively local to me, that I wouldnt use anything more than 1/4 on. Competitions are generally a different kettle of fish. Pattern boards are a bit like conspiracy theorists. They ask a lot of questions but don't prove anything. Gives you a rough idea but no two shots will ever be perfectly replicated. People also overlook the shot string rather than the spread. You might get a few side on flyers that break the target. Or you may get some of the final pellets do the damage. Where the majority actually missed.

Hello fellow shooters. I am new to this site and have a few questions if you allow my view point? I am curious as to why when you are patterning a shotgun are you not shooting from a bench rest? I have always shot from a bench rest whenever patterning a shotgun it is way more accurate. I do not understand your choke system, but I do understand how chokes work.

I have had a Longthorne sidelock for over 10 years, fixed chokes which are quarter and half, shoots everything from clays to game. Last year I purchased a Caesar Gerini Maxum Gold Ltd which is a stunning looking gun. Went to Purbeck S.S. put quarter choke in both barrels and used Hull Sporting 100 with 28g 8 shot on some of their FITASC layouts, some of the clays were easily 60 yards plus, most were broken convincingly. I believe Mike Reynolds, who owned Norfolk S.G. before he passed away, used a Browning bored improved cylinder and quarter choke. He won numerous national sporing titles.

@@roymartingunsmiths814 Ed, In his book, ' Shotguns and Cartridges', Gough Thomas states that the effect of choke on pattern diameter decreases at longer ranges. It would be very interesting to set up the boards at say 45 to 50 yards and see how the patterns compared. ( probably just number of strikes and spacing ). If, for example, 3/8 put as many pellets on the board as 3/4, it would demonstrate that tailoring load to range and quarry is more important than choke.

Crazy how many people changing chokes every station and yet I’ve watched guys crush 50yd crossers using a SK choke, 7/8oz of 7-1/2’s. Want further confirmation, on you tube watch Ben Husthwaite choke video where he said he was in a 3 way shootoff with Digweed and Matterese (spelling) and he had never seen targets that far before, he won the shootoff and was sure he had 3/4 chokes in his gun but once he checked they were indeed 1/4 (IC) chokes. It’s in our heads. The tighter the average shooter goes the more handicapped they are and their scores will suffer.

Doesn’t the ‘real’ choke depend on how the barrel is bored? I have a CG Invictus 7 bored 18.6mm and another gun bored 18.4 so there is nearly 8 thou difference to start with, so if a 10 thou choke in the tighter bore gives a nominal 1/4 choke, the same choke transferred to the CG bored 18.6 would give an EFFECTIVE choke of 18 thou (closer to half). Sorry to mix metric and imperial it is all but my 75 year old brain can manage! Perhaps my reasoning is incorrect but the only sure test of how your gun performs is to use the pattern plate assiduously?

Fully agree. Why make it harder for yourself by "over choking"? Matching the shot to the target with a 1/4 or a 3/8 choke is the way to go. Shoot smarter not harder. I made a video of my first practice with a new 694 with exactly that set of parameters, no sighter targets just took them as they came. Targets from 30 yards to 62 yards were all destroyed well enough to go on the score sheets as "won". Some misses were my fault - not the chokes. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aXivErs6yzA.html
