This year, my wife and I are on a path to dramatically improve our health by eating and living more ancestrally - only natural foods, more sunlight, more heat and cold exposure, natural cleaning products and more. Maple syrup from our forest is the first foraged/harvested food of the year.

Tell you what I learned, I learned that despite what my wife thinks about it, I am not crazy for wanting to be in the woods camping all by my self. In the mountains of Colorado there is no better place to just sit by the fire and listen to the forest talk to you. Thank you so much for sharing your quiet times in the woods.

Shawn, if you have ever heard the phrase, that person has an “old soul”, then you will understand why you love what you do. When I watch what you do in your videos it remind me of the pioneer days. You have created a pioneer mind set. Getting back to nature so to speak. Many who watch you, and love what you have accomplished, are “old souls” too. Being alone and loving it is a byproduct of an old soul. Embrace it because, that dash between our birth year and our death year is shorter than most believe. Make your dash count! Anyone who might consider you to be anti-social just might be a bit envious. 😉

hi, i´m a nurse from the east of germany, i love friday and saturday. Not only for its weekend, but hoping to see you and cali in the nature and your work in the surrounding area, its relaxing time with tea or coffee (sorry for my english.. too long ago..lol) i hear and read what you say about your opinions of being alone in nature with cali, enjoy the nature and her scent, the slight noises and everything arrounds you, no civilization. My thoughts as I watch this 'young' man work to his heart's delight; at 67 now, I have faith my husband and I will get that homestead land soon, and like Abraham and Sara, our strength and power will be renewed for the challenge set before us! Shawn your motives to drastically improve your health are fantastic. I pray for that in my own marriage. I need a challenge at my age and health. Being self-reliant is NEVER a flaw. If anything, it is a gift from God! Embrace it! I wish my country (USA) had more men like you. I was raised that NOTHING is free and you have to work hard for what you have and want, and I have. That's called a good work ethic! Something the youth in my country have lost long ago.

I too am most at peace when I am alone. Like you, I can't explain. I just find socializing exhausting and basically stressful. Keep being true to yourself and never feel like you have to explain your feelings of solidarity to your audience. Most people don't know what a sugar bush is. It's a stand of maples that usually is around up to 100 sugar maples in close proximity to each other. It will produce thousands of gallons of sap in the process of making maple syrup and maple candles. Usually maple leaves made from the granulate left from boiling. Dairy farms in the area where I live in NY usually are the ones who have sugarin shacks.

You really should concider wearing some form of leg protection when operating your chainsaw, nobody ever expects to suffer an acident but being on your own and in a very remote location you would greatly increase your survival chances with proper protective equipment. Just a thought.

James, the last section of the video was exactly me. I was born in 19 40s. I used to run away from classes to wander in nearby hills bushes and wildflowers and be by myself for hours. I really envy you. Life has chosen a different path for me. Army, family, business, and very little time to wander out in nature alone. In the last 10-15 years I started hiking the PCT in small sections and all by myself with some nights backpacking. It became my passion. People ask me: Aren'e you afraid, don't you feel lonely? On the contrary. I also started some overlapping as hiking started to be more difficult. Again, all by self in secluded places. I live in California and in Israel where I have 1/2 an acre and I love working in the yard for hours. It gives me so much satisfaction. I still have a dream to purchase a small cabin somewhere in the woods and live there for a good portion of the year, and do something similar to what you do of course I don't have the strength and skills you have, but I still can do many things, growing my own food, building simple things and enjoying being alone in nature, sweating and full of joy. Honestly what I like about your channel so much is how much variance there is in your content, it never gets boring. There is always something new to learn about and it's great. I agree with you for the most part on preferring to spend time alone. I love being able to do things on my own terms without having someone else's input all the time, maybe that's a bit selfish but it is what it is lol. But I also need time with my friends to socialize and get out of my head a bit. But afterward I need more alone time to recharge my social batteries hah, I guess it's all about finding our own personal balance that suits us best. And more importantly, finding our people, those we enjoy spending time with. Thanks for the video, Shawn. PS: I don't think Cali is the only one who got more fit after all that hiking in the US 💪🏻💪🏻 keep on keeping on 👍🏻

I went keto in 2017 .. love it .. I have had sugar 2 times, meaning white sugar in a desert ., my body hated it , , without sugar , The way my body feels now , I care more about that , and the distinct feeling of carbs and sugar in diet , is not good , yet I would ot have known the difference, if I would not have gone keto . Its my lifestyle now , Im older 56 ,. I am glad I have removed sugar , dont crave it and , what I love is that if I do have a piece of fruit , I eat a little as though its candy, I cant stand sugar sweet at all . My diet become cleaner and cleaner naturally because when we remove carbs we also remove processed/// .. I am proud of thatbecause growing up nin the 70's and 80's all the processed junk I was fed, was just poison..

Your Fur baby is so beautiful. My husband and I really enjoy watching what you do how you do things. Lots of days with him having stage 4 cancer. We sit and we watch your shows and other shows. That tree looked massive until you cut it down. I was convinced you were going to take out that whole fence line! But the tree came down inside the fence giving me a clearer understanding of how big that garden area actually is. A massive tree but huge pasture as well. As always a great video. That Cali girl sure is living a blessed life with this special family. She is loved by so many 🥰💝🐶🤗

Hey Shawn, back in October my wife died october 27th and a few days prior i decided to try the carnivore diet. Ive always been fit served a decade in the forces played rugby and boxed. Anyways after dealing with ptsd and then taking care of my wife for 22 months with cancer i did gain a lot of weight and fell out of shape. Ive tried a lot of diets. But afrer listening to Jordan peterson and his daughter i gave carnivore a shot. So i was 268.8 the day i started October 23rd 2023 and now i am 230 March 10 2024...what i did was eat a small fry steak in the am eggs for lunch and supper was steak and apsaragus and broccoli steamed. I did that for almost 6 weeks and dropped 28 pounds. Then i added fish chicken and lean ground beef. One meal i make is lean ground beef add celery onion hot sauce 2 cans of beans and spirces summer savery spicey pepper medley pepper and that was like a treat 2x a week for lunch still very lean tho. I also use Broya chicken broth in all my cooking. Anyways interesting you are starting the carnivore diet im not 100% strict but ill say the weight absolutely falls off. Cheers from Nova Scotia.

Hey Shawn! Did you know you can use smaller diameter drill when you tap your trees? You will get the same ammount of water but on the long term it will be much easier on your trees. We've been doing it for 20 some years in québec. And yeah I am 100% with you when comes to people😅 nothing wrong with you!!

As the creator of a You Tube channel with 2.17 million subscribers, I don't think you need to explain or apologize to anyone about the content of your videos. I think your subscribers understand why you do what you do and I am certain many of us feel the way you do: that we would rather be alone in the woods, living off the bounty of the land to the best of our ability, learning every day how to harmonize ourselves to the natural cycles of nature. I know I do! But for whatever reasons, many of us cannot live the life you have chosen, and so in some ways I guess we fulfill our wants vicariously through you. For myself, advancing age and it's associated health issues, as well as a lack of financial means, keeps me from following along your path. When I left SoCal in the mid-70's and migrated to the Pacific Northwest, my hope was to buy myself a few acres and build myself a small log cabin...I had everything I needed to accomplish that dream except money with which to buy myself some land. I was young, strong, energetic, fairly knowledgeable about woodcraft, all I needed (or so I thought at the time) was enough money to acquire some land. It never happened. As John Lennon so aptly said "Life is what happens when you are making other plans." I think that many of us among your subscribers have similar stories, which plays a big part in why we enjoy watching you fulfill your dreams.

Always enjoy spending time with you in the woods. You question the value of boiling sap for maple syrup, and maybe the economics don’t make a lot of sense. But, there’s no way to place a value on the joy and satisfaction that you enjoy when you’re in the forest!

What's entertaining for me is watching Cali out having fun with her Dad and all the projects each week out in the forest ! I am missing Em's videos and times like this doing the syrup but just like my girls they are grown up now and busy ! When you love what you do you will never "work" a day in your life. You very obviously love what you do. It feeds your soul and brings you a peace and calm that can only be dreamed of in an overindulgent, chaotic world. An old soul ...yes, for sure. Even as a kid I loved being in the country. All these years later I miss it and I can totally understand how you feel. It is getting more and more difficult for me to be social even though I live in a large city. I want to return to the woods and just be quiet. So there's no need to question yourself, Shawn. You are following your Divine Plan, and sharing your daily life with us is inspiring, quieting, and educational. Thank you for doing what you do and including us. I really enjoyed tonight's video! It's not boring or uninteresting.

Good video,Shawn. I, too thought that tree was gonna take out the fence but you put it right where you wanted. I enjoy watching Calli when she retrieves.. I envy your life-- wish I had the opportunity to do likewise, but I just turned 79 so .......

When I was a kid, the thing I looked foward to on Saturday's were watching Saturday morning cartoons with a bowl of frosted flakes. Now, as an adult, my new favorite thing is to watch you and Cali, while enjoying a cup of coffee LOL! Not much has changed. When my son gets older ( 2 months old now) this will be his favorite part of Saturday! Happy building!

Hello again Shawn. I bet the Lord Jesus has a piece of land with all your old tools and a log cabin waiting for you and your touches. I will be thrilled to come visit. I imagine what ever we loved will be part of our life there. God is creative and we are like him. I always feel at peace while spending time watching your videos. I need that these days. I find no matter what you post it’s very peaceful, informative, and relaxing. I love watching what you do and wish/hope I can do that someday. You’re teaching me that I need to start using the land I have for productivity instead of just a yard. I’m hoping this year my garden will do better than the last. Thank you
