I don't own the video or the song. This was unlisted so I reuploaded it. Original description: a rare demo version of Tally Hall's "Spring and a Storm" Original Uploaded By: Jordan Wysong Original Upload Date: Feb 23 2015
[Verse 1] One time, I tried to sing About spring and a storm But you know how it goes "Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah-blah, blah" All along Won't you please stop complaining? I'm playing a song [Chorus 1] But all the rain drops through the same Falling to from where they came And in time they all evaporate back to the sky [Verse 2] I wish you could've heard the music When the clouds growled overhead I finally felt enthusiastic I finally felt alive! "Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah-blah, blah" So you said "Would it please you to listen To thunder instead?" [Chorus 2] Man, the rain came down that day And it drained my dreams away And I almost never tried to try anymore [Bridge] [Rob and Zubin (Children)] Mr. Moon? [Joe (The Moon)] Yeah? [Rob and Zubin (Children)] Tell us about the sky! [Joe (The Moon)] The sky is deep and dark and eternally high Many people think that's where you go when you die [Rob and Zubin (Children)] Do you? [Joe (The Moon)] Well it seems to be tricky to tell Were there ever a heaven or hell Play pretend, my friend And lose yourself in the rain [Verse 3] We have so much left to sing There's a storm for every spring All you see and you and me, became from a star [Verse 4] You're a star Yes you are You're a star Yes you are You're a star Yes you are You're a star (Silent explosive and silent explosive) Yes you are (And silent explosive and silent explosive) You're a star (And silent explosive and silent explosive) Yes you are (And silent explosive and silent explosive and...) (You're a star) [Outro] Create until nothing is left to create (Yes you are) And the universe bursts with an overworked sigh (You're a star) And pretend to, pretend to be crowned a creation (Yes you are) And then sing the same things 'til the clouds start to cry and then (You're a star) Over, and over, and over, and over (Yes you are) And over, and over and never again... Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah-blah, blah...
i love both the demo and the published version. what's different is that this one sounds more home-made and feels like its played by a bunch of friends on a camping night, with everyone feeling a little bit depressed but still have fun together. while the published ver. feels more like someone playing the song on their mind, while doing their daily life and expressing more of their feelings. im definitely not good at describing things, and plus language barrier go boomboom- but yeah, thats all i guess (〜 ̄▽ ̄)〜
Well yeah all the tally hall demos before MMMM 2005 were recorded in Joes attic using a video camera and editing software, and yeah it really does sound beautiful!
Despite the lyrical changes between the demos and full releases, the most hurtful part of Joe’s songs are almost always exactly the same between versions. It really makes it feel like they were built off of the existence of this existential rant put into song form, and always gave Joe’s songs the feeling of being written by someone who isn’t always in a happy place.
Personally I prefer the “heaven or hell” bit more, not because of religion or anything, but I’ve always perceived this song as a “sometimes bad things happen, but it’s okay. And you should try to have fun regardless.” To me it’s literally the biggest problem all humans face, death. And it’s one we don’t have an answer to, it’s tricky to tell. So the best thing we can do is pretend it’s okay and enjoy the time we have alive. (At least that’s how I feel)
Honestly I greatly prefer the lyrics of this version, but greatly prefer all of the music parts of the final version. I almost wish I could take a karaoke background track of the final version, and combine it with an isolated vocals track of this demo lol
EXACTLY how I feel about this song Every time I sing it, I use the new melody, but switch up that bit for for the old lyrics while trying to fit the new melody
I mean it shows basically every part of major human knowledge that can be put into music. Electric instruments, knowledge of the stars, religion, and knowledge about functions of nature.
i dont know why im telling you this, but someone below you also has a licorice cookie pfp with a white background except its making a different expression, pretty cool
There was a comment on the original video, and idk if it's been put here aswell, but I'm paraphrasing it here cuz it is just my absolute favorite one. Demo: "Play pretend, my friend, and lose yourself in the rain" Final: "But I won't let you lose yourself in the rain" Something bad happened *Something BAD happened*
Joe’s demos seem to often talk about playing pretend, but get changed when it’s released. This is likely because of a mentality shift caused either by the band or his now confirmed mental illness which led him to believe being blissfully ignorant is no better than knowing the truth.
Thank God you reuploaded it. I can't really describe my insane love for this song, because I don't care for the original that much. It has such a bittersweet and sad feeling, making it really striking when it becomes all 'happy" because it still feels sad. Not only that, the lyrics are calm and deep. The Mr. Moon part is really deep and awesome to listen to, and I like how experimental the song gets in the last third as it gets SUPER chaotic. It also helps that it describes a certain character in my book.... Anyways, I hope you guys love this song just as much as I do.
@@kitsune630 I decided to relisten to the actual version of this and here is my full anyalsis on why I just don't like it as much: Voice effects: Way too many for my taste, littered everywhere. Here it is much more raw, and I like that feeling instead of these random voice effects for each singer. In my favorite part of the song, the Mr Moon part, the voice is replaced by a small child which is just... weird to me. It completley takes me out of the experience, I have no why. The moon's voice sounds so sweet here and mystical, it sounds super generic in the offical version. Lyrical flow: The best example of this is that in the demo it goes like: The sky is deep and dark and eternally high Many people think that's where you go when you die Do you? Well it seems to be tricky to tell Whether there's a heaven or hell Play pretend my friend and lose yourself in the rain These lyrics flow really well and have a really deep meaning in my opinion. In the offical version, it's this: The sky is deep and dark and eternally high Many people think that's where you go when you die Do you? Well, I think you return to obscure Or wherever you were Before you were But I won't let you lose yourself In the rain Just the lyrics do not flow at all. I don't think it's nearly as deep and thought provoking as "it's tricky to tell" because it really is tricky to tell. The demo's lyrics just flow SO much better. Music design: Of course it's better, since it's the offical version compared to the demo, I just prefer the actual musical chords of the demo. For example, around 0:28 in the offical version you hear a beat in the background that doesn't feel like it fits to me, instead of keeping the bittersweet tone it just... doesn't work that well for me. Compare this to around 0:24 in the demo, where we are kept with simple notes in the same fashion that I prefer way more. Another problem is that around the 1:55 mark in the offical, in the "the rain came down that day" it keeps a super upbeat tune with the sad lyrics. You could say this is good contrast, but I disagree. I'm not into music theory so I don't know much about it, but the one around 1:50 in the demo works much better at not being genericly postivie but being interesting yet still strangely positive. After this, around the 2:00 mark we have a dramatic shift in music that I LOVE in the demo. I think it's too drawn out in the offical for me, compard to the demo where it feels like this big change of music. In the demo is also doesn't give you time to breath for the Mr. Moon part, where in the offical it does give you about 2 seconds of space between the ending of that string of notes and the Mr. Moon, which I think is a mistake. After this we have a big change to the chaotic part, which I also really love in the demo (although I will admit the "you're a star" sounds really forced) and it's jsut subjective whether you like it more in the offical, it does sound more pleasant in the offical. Except I hate the voice effect for "silent explosive". If you notice, the song is slower in the offical which I think takes back from the chaotic nature of the last minute of the song, but that is totally subjective and it is easier to digest that way. It's just that paticualr chaoticness really makes for a really interesting shot idea I have for a movie I'm working on. The "Never Again" is my 2nd favorite part of the Demo, and it's so unexpected in the offical it ruins that area for me. In the demo, it quickly fades out of the chaoticness, making it natural while keeping the feeling. The demo simply just cuts off. After this you have the little guitar notes which are amazing in both parts, I'm not sure if I prefer the original or the Demo for this. So yeah. That's basically it. This is just a rare case for me where I love the demo way more. I don't really like any of their other songs that much, I just really love this one for some reason. The way it's so bittersweet, and the fact it has such a deepness and thought provoking idea to the lyrics, and the bittersweet guitar strings at the end are really something. I'm writing a book called Nightfall about stuff that is relevant, and I imagine this as the end credits for that, which lines up perfectly with the ideas presented in the book.
i dont know why but, i really prefer this over the original by so much, i cant live without this song, even though i find other songs, i think i love them so, and that they are my favorite, but deep down, i know this is the song for me. it gives me like, indescribable vibes, and its so chaotic, it starts out happy and fun, then starts getting all chaotic, and ends it off sadly and calmly. this song just gives me a feeling of freedom, and as the title says, it really just feels like spring. this song.. i just.. the feelings of freedom, all the bad memories come in during the chaotic part, everything falling apart, the whole world in chaos, then just, closing my eyes... calmness... i vision myself and my 2 (now passed) dogs sitting, in a forest, with trees surrounding us, on a small hill, with the moon enlightening us. this song just.. its indescribably good, it really makes me tear up. thank you so much for reuploading this
i love the difference between "the rain" in this version and the official release. it seems that in the official lyrics "the rain" symbolizes losing your way, or getting caught up in figuring out what to believe. this version seems like it means just letting your imagination run wild, and deciding what the "afterlife" means for yourself, if there even is one. that's my understanding of it, anyway.
what if one day, like 50 or 60 years from now, tally hall becomes lost media? how will that impact the internet? i mean, it's near impossible for them to fade to obscurity, considering (1. how big their digital footprint is, and (2. how they're the most known unknown band ever. but if it does ever come to that time in the internet where the only evidence of their mere existence as a band will be a 50 second clip of this demo, some low-quality clips from T.H.I.S reuploaded to vimeo, and a few gen z-ers, god will i be here for it (and it would be a very short search.)
Thank you for uploading this again. When it got taken down last time I felt sadness, indescribable sadness, to have lost this version of Spring and a Storm. Finally, it rises from the sand it was hidden in!
I love you Joe Hawley, you didnt just gave me the beautiful Hawaii Part II album but also this equally beautiful song. May the universe bless your soul ❤️
thank you, i love this song so much (and especially the demo) and i forgot about it for awhile and felt sad when i saw the original video i watched was private, and this gives me so much comfort
the original Mr moon part seems to shut down the idea of religion, while the final version seems to allow them to come up with their own conclusions, but tells them not to overwhelm themselves with topics beyond the understanding of man, and simply life our lives not getting 'lost in the rain'
I don't think so. It says that it's tricky to truly determine whether it exists or not, but to follow what you want anyway. It least that's how I see it.
Istg I’ve seen the image before , I’m literally on my older acc trying to figure out where I’ve seen it 😭 I think it’s a re-enactment of another cover image of some sort??
This is one of the demos to “Spring and a Storm”. The lyrics are similar to the final version, besides some fine-tuning done for pacing and sound. The demo sounds overall lower than the finished version, using a guitar and deeper tone of singing. The rain and thunder effects are not present in the demo version.
one time i tried to sing about spring and a storm but you know how it goes bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla all along won’t you please stop complaining? i’m playing a song but all the rain drops in the same falling to from where they came and in time they’ll all evaporate back to the sky i wish you could’ve heard the music when the clouds growled overhead i finally felt enthusiastic i finally felt alive bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla so you said would it please you to listen to thunder instead? man the rain came down that day and it drained my dreams away and i almost never tried to try anymore mister moon? yeah? tell us about the sky the sky is deep and dark and eternally high many people think that’s where you go when you die do you? well it seems to be tricky to tell whether ever a heaven or hell (?) play pretend, my friend, and lose yourself in the rain we have so much left to sing there’s a storm for every spring all you see and you and me became from a star you’re a star yes, you are you’re a star yes, you are you’re a star yes, you are you’re a star (silent explosives and silent explosives and) yes, you are (silent explosives and silent explosives and) you’re a star (silent explosives and silent explosives and) yes, you are (silent explosives and silent explosives and) (you’re a star) create until nothing is left to create (yes, you are) and the universe bursts with an overworked sigh (you’re a star) then pretend to pretend to recrown a creation (yes, you are) and sing the same thing til the clouds start to cry (you’re a star) over and over and over again (yes, you are) and then over and over and never again bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla
