Ik this was a year ago but I ended up watching the show Rise and they did this musical and SPOILERS (if you watch it) a part of the plot was the principle and teachers trying to censor the show and changing the entire plot (taking out the abuse, the gay scenes, the sex, the swearing, the pregnancy, literally the entire plot) and in the end they went ‘frick you’ to the rules and did the original musical and right at the end of Totally F*****d when here’s the big f bomb they had to censor it on tv. I nearly died from the irony and just the pure silence at the end.
Does anyone else find it ironic how censored this performance is when the entire musical is about the effects of censorship on young people? I know there's a couple hundred years difference, but the principal still applies :P They did a fantastic job considering though, love this musical so bloody much!
You bring up a good point. But welcome to cable television. I'm surprised it wasn't censored further. Had they not censored themselves, the network would've censored them.
Tom Pinney This was live on CBS, not cable, so you're right, FCC restrictions were in full force. Also, the musical is mostly about repression; it's not at all about censorship.
I think that was part of the performance. It was a bit of a statement against censorship (the way that they covered their mouths every time the lyrics contained something they couldn't say). The creative team probably thought it was stupid that their original score couldn't be performed, so they took the chance to try to condemn the concept.
Guess what? It was a decision made because they would have had to pay a substantial fine for swearing on TV. There's not a hidden meaning there. No one wanted to pay that money for saying fuck multiple times.
The amount of things they had to change in order for this to be performed at the Tony's is astounding. This is my favorite show I wish they didn't have to censor it
That little tic/head-dip John did at the start of his mini-solo, it was to give himself a moment bc he wasn't expecting the cheers when he started singing and he started getting choked up...awww poor sweetheart, no need to get misty, you rock!
I think of Spring Awakening as a beautiful musical that led to Lea’s discovery & ruin, 7 yrs from when she was 13 through 20, w/ the I believe s.scene w/ Jonathan Groff night after night after night uncool
One of my favorite musicals of all time, where the cast are all equal in talent and can perform at the drop of a hat. Yet autotuned pop shit makes money.
I think the reason I can't really fully appreciate any other Moritz in any other rendition of Spring Awakening is because John Gallagher Jr. Is just so amazing as Moritz like I can't picture anyone else.
i love John Gallagher Jr's anecdote about his little 'tick' in his 3rd line, he did that because he wasn't expecting the audience to cheer when they saw him and it made him start to feel a little overwhelmed so he did that to make it through his lines
Pls tell me I'm not the only one who has rewinded about a thousand times to John Jr's part and then goes to rewind again to see it again cuz he's so darn cute but then sees Jonathan being equally as cute and has to watch him before rewinding again
+meli kings sorry but it's Jonathan Groff, the 2nd guy who sings, that was on Glee with Lea. Skylar Astin(guy in weird glasses) is the Pitch Perfect guy.
I think of Spring Awakening as a beautiful musical that led to Lea’s discovery & ruin, 7 yrs from when she was 13 through 20, w/ the I believe s.scene w/ gay Jonathan Groff night after night after night creepy
@@nadiashireensiddiqi aaaaand I think of your opinion as trash. What does Jonathan’s sexuality have to do with *anything*? And who said Lea is “ruined”? Wtf?
@@RachelB887 she was revealed to be pretty racist and horrible to the people she worked with, especially on glee….idk dude she’s pretty horrible but she is talented.
@@elizabethmok554 yes, we all know you read only headlines. If you weren't, you would know that one black girl felt offended (and she worked with her probably a few months) but the other black girl that worked with her from start to finish stated otherwise, so who is more credible? And horrible comments? Find me a person that has never made any.
@Karolina W Why in the world are you defending her? You are so incredibly rude. It is not okay that you don’t believe the story. Racism is a serious issue that can’t be dismissed. Get some respect in your blood right the heck now!!!!
@@Max-my6rk I watched that I'm not saying they couldn't sing in Glee, I'm just saying I prefer their singing without autotune. I have that with, like, everyone in Glee btw.
I think of Spring Awakening as a beautiful musical that led to Lea’s discovery & ruin, 7 yrs from when she was 13 through 20, w/ the I believe s.scene w/ Jonathan Groff night after night after night was I reckon in retrospect highly unnecessary
I think you're not in a position to judge her personality since you don't know her personally and I bet you don't personally know a single person that worked with her.
@@willberedvelvetsyear Are we really all watching glee all of a sudden and getting musicals recomended? Cause I'm here for that. LETS BRING BACK THE BROADWAY HYPE
I hate that they censored "Bitch of Living" so much at the fucking Tony awards. The entire point of drama is to impact people. Hard to do when you soften it up for living rooms.
Love the show, love their performance, but way too much censorship. Whoever told them they would have to change that much stuff clearly missed the point of the entire show - that the censorship of young people is wrong. #irony.
This is the performance that led me to my Spring Awakening obsession...Years after its final performance on Broadway. Lauren Pritchard gives such a fierce performance. LOVE IT!!!!
You know, it's really hard to explain, actually. I think it's a beautiful musical that covers all the bases of problems you can have in high school, with hauntingly beautiful songs as well as catchy ones and incredible performances from the entire cast. But if you don't see it that way, it's hard to change your mind to make it "good" for you. That's why I think it's good though, if that helps.
Wow, id never really listened to anything in this musical but knew the name. There's something truly raw, nostalgic and melodically enchanting about it. Perhaps its just that it delivers its intended message so well, without typical commercial nature of some musicals, nothing cliché, just doing what fits. Everything on stage that they worked hard for seems so organic. Id love to see this. It also makes me mourn my unadventurous youth....
The bitch of living bit, it's like they're bleeding on stage, it's just so guttural and achy, but so beautiful, i really need to see this, and research this show...and the composer
@@ohheyscarlett no i didnt, i remember hearing about it, but forgot to try and find it! I will check youtube. Was it any good? Looking back at what i wrote three years ago is strange, but so interesting that this tony performance gave such an instant reaction when watching
To all the people complaining about this being censored: you do realize that this was on TV, and not the actual show? Unless you want them to change the law just for the Tony's, then yeah, its gonna be censored
Cool Cool I still think it's ridiculous.First, it's a late night show, kids are are not really supposed to be watching TV. Second, warning labels for explicit content exist.
i used to watch the tony performances ( i was 7 when this aired) but i never was able to watch the entire thing cause i would fall asleep half an hour into the awards show, even though i didnt know what the tonys were i just liked the music that i heard
