Tim, my friend, at 77 I know what you mean. We moved from the farm to 1/2 ac. and that was hard to do. However, with my health issues it was a have to case. You can take the farmer off the farm but you can't take the farm out of the farmer. I now have a 2013 Kubota 29 hp 4X4 with loader. I have a Brinley 12 in. plow, a King Kutter 4 ft tiller, and a 6 ft. 3 pt. finish mower. I'm kinda like you, in that I do custom work, but on a much smaller scale. I loaned out my plow last fall and hope to get it back soon. I need to plant grass seed where we had a garden. Take care, and be safe. I like your videos and gald to see bible verses at the end. Thanks, and God bless.

We have an old single furrow Ferguson plow my late father had. I hook it up to the old 1956 John Deere row crop once in a while just for the fun of it. Yes my 1025r and tiller will do the job, but it’s fun. The furrows are not the best and I always remember my father telling me a farmer took pride in his straight furrows. Well the field is a distance from any eyes so I’m good with whatever comes out behind the plow. Lol. 👍

We had a semi mounted “one way” disc when we were kids. Used mostly to build up terraces. Deep breaking plow was a 5 bottom Stanton roll over. 16” bottoms. That is a HEAVY beast and is on land. Dual wheel Case 1170 could barely pull it. Back unit is removable and thats what we did. Still sits on our place but the family that farms this small place owns it now. Really enjoy watching old equipment worrk

Brings back great memories for me to. We lived about an hour north of Minneapolis,MN. We had 20 acre hobby farm. We had a John Deere M and a 2 bottom plow, that 2 bottom gave that little M a work out usually had use 1st gear it was slow but i loved doing it. We had a Farmall h it would pull the plow better but i loved that little Johnnie popper.

We had a 1940's Farmall A, with a one bottom plow we used on our 1+ acre wheat field and 3/4 acre corn field. Heavy clay soil, and often either Mom or I had to ride on the cross brace of the plow to weigh it down, lol. Took awhile to get it done, one furrow at a time, but it worked. The farmer around the corner used a 3 bottom like that hooked to some sort of Ford Utility tractor to do his. Don't think I ever noticed the model. Your 5E looks to handle that one just fine.

I remember as a child the first time riding in a car behind one of our tractors with an IH 4 bottom plow and being fascinated with the combination linkage to lower, lift and steer the tail wheel. A few years later I got a large Erector Set for Christmas and I built that linkage setup with it. I think I was 6 or 7. My family was impressed.
@TractorTimewithTim
@TractorTimewithTim 4 года назад
As I recall the IH plows, one HAS to lift the tail end of the plow at each end to get the last plow sufficiently out of the ground. With the Oliver, we don’t have to lift the tail end to turn...only for special circumstances, or road travel. I was always fascinated with this difference.
@markloomis1415

If you use and set the draft control correctly, the tractor will control the depth of the plow no matter if you are going up hill or down. Draft control works with mounted or semi mounted plows but obviously not trailer plows. I believe Allis Chalmers was the first to offer draft control and called it Traction Booster. Allis Chalmers also had a special Traction Booster hitch platform available for pull type implements that would actually use the tongue of a wagon for instance as a fulcrum if the tractor encounters a slippery surface and would sense the change in draft and actually start lifting the pull type implement or wagon and put more weight on the back tires of the tractor!

Tim in my humble opinion the Oliver plows all of them, semi mounted, mounted and pull types was the best plow ever made for a couple reasons. They pulled easier and they turned the soil better thus covering up the trash better than any plows ever made. I have pulled John Deere, Case IH, MM and Massey and if you could pull a 5 bottom 16 inch on any other brand you could pull one more bottom if it was a Oliver. I include White plows too since Oliver became White. I still have a White 5 bottom 16 inch plow I use when plowing old Alfalfa hay fields to reseed them but only on 50 acres of hay I raise for horses and to sell that is on rolling ground.

Good description of the different plow types. One thing you didn't mention with the semi-mounted plow is that it has a hydraulic cylinder that raises & lowers the tail wheel. That's most useful, I always thought, when finishing out a 'land'. It let's you raise the rear moldboards, but keep the front moldboards in the ground, letting you adjust to the width of the unfinished land.

I think plowing and then tilling is far better than simply tilling alone unless your garden plot has been a garden plot for at least a few years. we always plowed in late fall to allow the earth to freeze and thaw over winter which helps break the soil up very nicely. of course that is just one way to do it that works well here in Virginia. I don't do much plowing these days for myself so typically people wait till late winter or spring before they start asking about plowing. still using the single bottom plow which takes longer but means I get more seat time. I could use a two bottom plow on my size tractor but it would be a better fit with ag tires. since I use the R4 tires the single bottom is a better fit for this set up. I just went and looked at a plot of virgin soil that I may be plowing and then tilling soon. hopefully I will feel like making a video on that. enjoyed the video I always enjoy plowing way more than tilling reminds me of my childhood plowing with the old farmall tractor.

Deep tillage is pretty much a thing of the past in Nebraska (and many other parts of the country), so it's one of the few farming activities I've never gotten to do myself. I do remember riding once as a kid, but that's about it. Sometime you should show how you can keep the tail of the plow lifted to leave almost no furrow at the end. I'm sure some would find that trick interesting.

Maybe I would be rushing it, but ,I would have wanted to bust up the soil with the tiller after plowing it, but I know if you had done that all you would have is add another job tilling it again later. I grew up using a 3pt plow, but all we did was our garden and a neighbor's or two. I can remember Dad fiddling with the top link and the side arm adjustment until it was throwing the soil how he wanted. I also remember him cursing the plow if a neighbor had borrowed it the year before and failed to coat the moldboards and shares with grease, or he found the failed to rest it on a couple of 2x's on the ground.
@TractorTimewithTim
