Before digital reverb, electromechanical Spring and Plate reverbs reigned supreme. These are well known staples of studio and stage, but what's the difference between Spring and Plate reverb?

Let's not forget the time honoured practice of taking your spring reverb amp and giving it a swift kick to jangle the springs and make a noise like thunder. Riders On The Storm, anyone?

I do love these “what’s the difference” videos Colin. Very often guitarists just spout whatever terminology they’ve heard elsewhere without giving much thought to what it actually means. So it’s nice to get some real clarity when it comes to these topics.

but since when frequency affects speed of wave? its total crap :)
@PHIplaytesting

It's not actually the speed of the propagation; it's about how the energy of the different frequencies build up and diminish over time.

This is a very informative video. See RU-vid? Colin deserves so many more subscribers and views, HE ACTUALLY EDUCATES US in even greater detail than even some of the bigger RU-vid channel stars. And Colin doesn't need to make 20-30 minute videos to do it either. He needs to be pumped up! Great channel, great content, great RU-vidr. Thank you Colin for all that you do man! Buy this man a shot!

I like the spring reverb’s delay-like effect. It also adds a great thickness to your sound without much else when turned on subtly (on my amp 9:00 is where it starts becoming obvious reverb).

Love the more physicsy videos you do, far more interesting than the stuff on my bsc, would be interesting to hear how moving the contact microphones on the plate or changing the boundaries of it would change the phase of the reflected waves compared to the first waves. Would be awesome to see some videos on other old analogue effects with a bit of the physics behind it too

I like how Colin balances out his content, some guitar content providers just make videos to show their guitar skilz. I don't come to see dudes play guitar (Unless I come to learn some playing techniques) unless it's Dave Mustaine or someone like that. I have no problem with playing if it suits the content, but some guys it's 1 minute of what you clicked for, and 14 minutes of a shitty generic blues riff.

@robfriedrich2822

Spring Reverb was the compact low budget version of plate reverb. Hammond invented this for the speaker systems, but it became the standard reverb for live music a long time. The initial version was more a room reverb, later it changed to a sound, more like a hall. I had a transistor organ with a spring reverb, that was like the one, you demonstrated in the video.

I object at 6:30. The speed of a wave is frequency INDEPENDENT. Blue light and red light both travel at the speed of light (3*10^6 m/s in air), and high pitch sounds do not travel faster than low frequency sounds when traveling through the same medium. Velocity = Frequency * Wavelength. This is a physical principle, but it does not mean that the brightening effect of plate reverb isn't real. My guess is that the brighter reverb sound is due to lower frequencies being scrambled and dissipated in the plate, where high frequencies can bounce and interact with other vibrations in the plate without being degraded. Phase cancellation and deconstructive interference are more likely with long wavelength signals than short.
