Hi Laura, I just trimmed back my Bougainvilleas. I'm 70 and gardening for over 50 years. I even started a RU-vid channel after watching yours for the past 5 years. I did have a 14.5 acre Orchard, but now have a small residential house and yard. I'm all about "Work Smarter, Not Harder!" Old hands move slower 👩🌾👍
Good job, you’re very lucky! I live in Canada and I keep my bougainvillea in pots and they’re tiny and hate me all winter. But they bloom beautifully on my balcony in the summer. I just love them. Too bad I’ll never see one in its full glory!
@@rubyoro0 Hi Ruby, I only trim the branches growing straight up, rougue branches. If it looks like it going to drape and bloom I leave it. I started out at 18" and it took 10 years of training and hand pruning.
Theoretically speaking, one generally doesnt prune climbers down regularly. In a perfect world, it's more a matter of taking whole canes out that have gotten too old, woody, etc. But if you're growing them on small arches like Laura is, you will probably want to prune them slightly to keep them appropriately sized for the arch. If Laura isn't able to get to it soon, I'll post some videos here from other people that I have found useful. I'm hoping she goes into detail with her Colettes!
@@jsmiles1991 - thank you, Julie. I must have heard that somewhere because I do leave mine be. Just would like to see how Laura does it. I will check out Paul.
My one suggestion when pruning roses, and this comes from an optometrist is wear eye protection! He told me once a thorn in your eye can actually be worse than a metal fragment because of the bacteria it can bring in.
Oh, my husband is definitely going to watch this video. I did this during the fall to some rose bushes and my husband got a little upset with me. I told him him I was going to set him down and watch your video so he will chill out about me trimming the rose bushes. So thank you for this video...😉😊
🌿ya gotta love this.. We have Laura pruning a rose bush, adding fertilizer, with snow on the ground behind her and she has her coat off!!😜 you can’t make this stuff up!! Hello sweet Benjamin, and of course always good info!! Thank you Laura!!🌿
THANK YOU so much for pruning that GIANT ROSE 🌹 bush on video! I have 4 large bushes in my yard that absolutely intimate me...a couple years, I went without pruning them all together 😬 Imma’ gonna get out there today and cut those beasts down! ✂️ 👹
When we moved into our house, 36 years ago, there was a leggy, sprawling climbing rose bush with the ugliest roses. They were a deep pinkish red that opened up to a yellow gold center. I personally do not like roses that open all the way up like that. It took several years but we finally got that rose bush removed. I’m thinking about planting new roses that don’t climb and dedicate the area to my sweet Aunt. She loved roses so much. We lost her 5 years ago and she is missed greatly.
Very timely! Please do a video soon on pruning back an overgrown climbing rose-they are my nemesis-I’m never sure what to prune out and cut back. Thank you!
Just what I needed now that spring’s on it’s way and I’ve just moved and gotten my very first garden 😁 I knew 2.5 years before I moved that we were moving to this house so I’ve been able to dream of what I want to do in the garden so I’ve been watching your videos since then and soaking up as much information as possible 🤗
I just pruned my roses last weekend. Its my first spring in a new house and I was sooo nervous to prune them. This video makes me feel better and gives me confidence that I can cut them back even a little more! Phew!
Your big bushy rose looks like Savannah to me. I just gave mine a big prune, too. It's only five years old, but the crown is huge. It is a prolific bloomer and a fast rebounder. Enjoy!
Very helpful and informative. Thank you!! Benjamin is so cute and is growing into such a helpful and sweet young man. Makes me smile every time she is in your videos.
Have you ever pruned back too much and regretted it? I have. :) It's amazing how pruning just neatens up everything. Thanks for your content, really helps a wannabe like me!
I need to take the covers off my roses & cut them back too! Excellent tips on starting Spring clean up!! Benjamin is such a joy to watch helping with the garden chores, enjoy watching all of you as family!! 🌹🌱😃🌞
So, so helpful!! I inherited over 140 rose bushes when we purchased our house 25 years ago and I’m still learning how to prune all these beautiful plants. I’ve watched lots of RU-vid videos over the years but yours are THE BEST I’ve ever watched! Could you do a video on how to prune climbing roses? I’ve got 8 of those and never sure if I’m doing the right thing.
Spring pruning great satisfaction watching you work too much snow on the ground in Ontario canada but did get car washed this morning no auto car was for me hand wash only nothing like clean car and watching Laura Monday morning😃😍
Love waking up to see a new video, especially spring cleaning videos! Gives me motivation to get outside today. I only have climbing roses, but some of this still applies. It’s amazing how sad everything looks right now but in a short few months everything will be glorious!🌸
Aww Benjamin is such a little boss, I love it 💙 also its a relief seeing you're bulbs aren't 100% ready i live in Texas and I was getting kinda worried for mines I was thinking they died in the freeze we had a few weeks back 😬
This tutorial is much better than the others.I like how you pause before to explain, talk through your modeled example, and then pause afterward to explain what you did and why.
Perfect timing! Took today off from work to prune my roses! We too still have snow on the ground, but the forecast shows a row of 60 degree days coming up here in southeastern Pennsylvania. Thanks for the great video!
Great video. I was going to do that yesterday and we got a hail, thunderstorm. Portland is so wet I can't feed the roses yet, but hopefully today I can prune.
Pruned my roses the other day. I need to get some rose tone though. Thanks for the reminder. Benjamin is so sweet. "He's got you!" lol I saw my great grandson yesterday for the first time. Babies are God's gift to us. We enjoyed him so much. His name is Asher. Happy gardening.
Thank you so much for this information. I’ve always read it and never really understood it but watching the entire step has shown me what I needed to know to prune my roses!!
Hi Laura, I’m in a zone 6a (Massachusetts) We get more moisture than you, but overall, I’m able to follow along with your projects and plant choices because our growing zones are similar. However, now that we’re approaching springtime, I see that you get an earlier spring than we do! We still have snow on the ground like you do and we’ll see some 50’s and 60’s this week, but we are still consistently seeing overnight temps in the 20’s. Can you talk a little more about the specifics of determining the right time to begin projects like this? I’m SO anxious to begin late winter/spring projects but I hesitate because I am afraid I may be too early and want to avoid damage especially to my (newly planted - last summer) roses. Thank you! :)
Nice chopping on that big one! Looks amazing now! Too early here in Reno yet, it's supposed to snow again off and on all week til Thursday. Getting so excited for spring, living through your videos to keep me amped! Thank you Laura!
I am loving the Felco gloves 🧤- thank you for explaining that you’re a smaller hand person....I love the thumbs. I had been wearing through the Nitro gloves until these came into the garden!
So this video is right on time! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 I’m in zone 7 Georgia and inherited a really pretty rose bush at our new home. She was gnarley and neglected, and I really didn’t know what to do with her. She has the same small delicate pink roses your big mama has. Now I know what to do and will start pruning her back this weekend. Thx for the fertilizer tip too bcuz I was unsure when and how to use that too. 👍🏽👏🏽👍🏽👏🏽👍🏽
Perfect timing for this video. I've pruned a couple of my roses but have two larger size shrub roses that have felt daunting. I feel I can tackle them now. Love the extra Laura effects in the videos. I could use a few extra of her in my garden. 😂
I just did this to some burning bushes yesterday. They've obviously been neglected for a really long time by the previous owners. I was sawing crossing branches that were two inches or more around. I was shocked at how bad they were. Hopefully, they are happier this spring.
I feel so much better! I was in my beds yesterday cleaning up yesterday with patches of snow everywhere, happy that you are doing the same!! I feel much less crazy now! Lol 😆
It makes me so happy when I get to start taking care of the garden. Love the beautiful pick roses from the large shrub. It looks like your shoes in the picture match the roses. Happy coincidence.
THANK YOU!!!!! I found your you tube and I have the confidence to take care of my roses today! Very informative and easy to follow you how to prune roses. Happy Easter!
Garden pruning and clean up has to be my most satisfying task. Everything looks ready for spring and growth. It’s amazing how much better it looks. Good job, mom! Benjamin is such a cute little man. 👏🏻💕👏🏻
Thank you so much for the rose 🌹 pruning video!! I’ve asked before and you have achieved greatness! You’re garden is amazing and I can’t wait to see it in full bloom again. Thanks for the tips! Oh and cross cane does damage the branches too. I won’t be afraid to cut mine more this year thanks to you. 🙏
Hi, l've been watching your videos for about 6 months now and enjoying every one l've seen so far. l am getting alot of good info, you truely are an inspiration, keep up the good work, your garden is amazing. I can't wait to see whst you do with the new proterty this year. 👍🌻
Beautiful week shaping up here in southeast Michigan, so coffee with Laura, Benjamin, and the roses is Perfection. Enjoy good health and a happy gardening week everyone 💐❤️🥰
I wanted to say thanks for your rose pruning bush from, I think, last year. I saw some lovely roses for sale locally but I was nervous about them so I went to RU-vid and found your video and it gave me the courage to buy the rose bush and I am SO glad I did. ^_^ Thank you guys for all the info and dedication you put into your channel!
