The 2024 gardening season is upon us! It is about that time to begin seed starting for the summer gardening season this year, and I have finally gotten my seed orders in the mail.
Today we are going over the new varieties I will be testing out in my desert garden this year, as well as some AWESOME companies that I believe provide sustainable seeds and great education for those that are growing in difficult climates. Below are the seeds company websites I mentioned, as well as other great seed companies I have used in the past that provide heirloom, organic, and non-GMO seeds at a great price for homesteaders and gardeners everywhere!
I have no affiliation with the following companies. They are just awesome and deserve our support :)

Seed haul videos are the ones that get the in trouble all the time😊 I always end up buying seeds knowing that I don't have space for them.

Love seed hauls 🌱 I garden in an arid, high desert. Tomatoes that have done well for me, porters improved or porters pride, sungold, speckled roman paste. I also follow "growing in the garden" on youtube she's in mesa az . Not quite the same as high desert but lots of good growing in desert info. Look forward to seeing your garden grow 😊

Hello new sub here. I’m 64 and growing conditions here in west Texas. Only 6” of rain in past 12 months here has fallen on my property 😢. We have starting in July 108 - 113 temp in daytime and unfortunately HOT DRY WINDY and temps at night above 90. I have found just picking seeds for triple digits does NOTwork! My area requires plants that can tolerate Hot,DRY, WINDY conditions with no relief at night! It’s not always this bad about every 5 to 7 years I catch a break…. We have short spring and “ cloudy day “tomatoes did great! a whole lot of production before dying! Enjoy your shows just binge watch several!

Cloudy Day paste for early spring and late autumn! Great taste via irrigation only! Sun Gold thieves with shade and irrigation. We do not have a monsoon season. Melon is personal size Kajairi was wonderful. none of my other melons made. Qushaw green and white stripe from my grandfather thrives! Did not have any other squash or cucumber make. If I had planted lemon cucumber it would have made, because it has before! Potatoes started in March, late potatoes both grow well! Sweet potatoes do great IF you irrigate heavy. No green beans for past 4 years… purple hull black eye peas or plain black eye peas, both grow well in shade of okra plants! Popcorn multi color gem grow and can be eaten sweet corn stage! Onions Texas Grano is ok, if it’s rainy summer, woohoo got onions! Garlic from grocery always grow great start them in fall! Zinnias thrived in heat with great irrigation. This is my experience south of Abilene, Texas. My rainfall on my property for 2023 was only 6.5”….summer temp 106 to 113 July, August, Sept, First week October. Night temp stay above 90 was average in July and August. Maybe we will get rain in summer of 2024! Always hopeful! Yes Craig’s list is a thing. Don’t like FB market place. Too many scammers.

Soo interesting. Your arid climate adapted seeds are gorgeous. I’m very interested to see how your varieties grow. I’m trying a spring garden from seed for the very first time in north Georgia. I ordered from Eden Brothers, Botanical Interests, Hudson Valley Seed Co, and Bakers Creek is on the way. I’m trying big rainbow tomatoes, mushroom basket tomatoes, fox cherry tomatoes, jalapeños medium heat, jimmy nardello peppers, watermelon radish, red atomic carrots, black beauty eggplant, fairytale pumpkin (not sure where I’ll put this), honeynut squash, lacinto kale, little gem lettuce… among other things. I went a little crazy. Now I’m seed starting trying to get some baby plants going.🌱 yay for Spring!

Check out San Diego Seed Company, they have a RU-vid channel and specifically grow for seed production and teaches people how to grow from seed in zone 9 and 10. Even though you are in 8b? I believe you could benefit from the adapted seeds of the hot, arid climate. (I'm working towards creating a permaculture food oasis here in Slab City, Southern California where we get three inches of rain per year and it gets as hot as 135 F. We hit 120F every summer, for sure.)
