I'm quite excited about the flared / wide legged pants coming back. I've been wearing them all along since I am very pear-shaped and skinny jeans only make my hips look larger. I may not have been "on trend" these past few years, but wearing a tailored top with a structured fit, I feel balanced out. Wear the trends you are comfortable with and pass on the ones you don't. I am petite and pear shaped. I do wear the flared jeans with a heel and I think they look good on me. I also like the ankle jeans and straight leg jeans on me. I have never liked the skinny jeans or crops on me. They just are not flattering on me.

It pays to keep some of the wide-leg slacks in your closet, I'm back in style as we used to wear wide legs pants not all that long ago. So just with a nice new trendy top and we are good to go. I'm so glad that white sneakers are back on-trend this year. I used to love wearing them and now they are back in style too. It is so true that trends seem to repeat themselves!! The same holds true with shoes however, they change them just enough that they aren't quite like the old faves.

There are various leg widths for the wide leg pants, we don’t have to go extreme elephant! 😁 A flattering cut for petites is the bootcut, and it’s also always on trend.

In my opinion it’s the best, most flattering way to dress when 50+ but younger, too! Put together, sophisticated, comfortable, practical, modern, and never frumpy! I have also subscribed to a rule which is to buy a piece you might come across, not planning to look for, but when something just speaks to you, get it, and you’ll treasure it for years, probably wear it out!

Great style update for spring, thanks! I was planning on wearing one of my Liberty print shirts today, so fun for spring and a nice twist on the classic white or blue-striped ones, which I also love. Regardless of which bottoms I wear, I always feel great in a crisply-ironed cotton or linen shirt.

I love wide leg pants and will be buying as many as feasible while they're "on trend." My favorite current outfit is red wide leg pants with a matching turtleneck worn under a tan oversize long vest belted in the middle. My fav and also one of my most complimented looks.

I agree, there are many great styles that aren’t super slim and tight. I hear many women just automatically reject everything that doesn’t have a tight waist, but I don’t believe that every outfit, everyday has to prove we have a certain shape. What about Jackie Kennedy’s shift dresses, for example, no one would mistake her for “fat” in those.

A lot of it has to do with body type though. Without waist definition I look frumpy and sloppy. It's not about proving my shape, it's about knowing what styles of clothing flatter my body type. My friend with a totally different body type and bone structure looks amazing in looser pieces without waist emphasis.

Great breakdown and you showed such wearable outfits! I love pastels, big pants, oversized blazers... I think the trends are great. Wide leg pants are my favorite and even though I am really petite, I still wear them bc I love them. Women should always wear what they love and not worry about perfection all the time.

It is easier to shop for pastels this year, I think. Finally, many cool pinks, light minty (and sage) greens and light blues are available. For twenty years or more, all I could find were those peachey, orangey-pinks (often called “blush”), that didn’t suit my cool coloring at all. I also love the new taupe-beiges, stone and birch colors, as opposed to the warm camel-beiges of the last few years. At last, there are offerings for both cool- and warm-toned complexions (yellow-greens, yellows, oranges and sunset reds).

Love these trends. I just ordered the sailor pant denims from Tablots. And now I'm wishing I hadn't just ditched my Liberty print J Crew shirt when I was doing a recent closet purge. I found myself not wearing it often, so put it in the donation bin to make room in my closet.

Espadrilles definitely look springy, and they come in so many varieties - canvas, leather, flats, platform, wedges, etc. and they can be paired with casual or more dressy outfits!

Regardless of age I think it's important to keep up with trends just adding a few new pieces. I adore blazers and have been collecting them forever. Tailored loose and longish all colours. Ralph Lauren makes many styles in petites. If this style is available in petite, I’ll get those. H&M also has some wide-leg jeans in 100% cotton, which I love, an inexpensive way to experiment with this style, but they run TWO full sizes smaller than their normal sizes. I had to re-order twice, and no, I didn’t gain weight, their old jeans still fit me.

I had a pair of sailor pants like the Talbot's you showed when I was 12 years old that I absolutely loved. When I saw these I had to buy a pair. It's a little more than I like to pay for my jeans, but I haven't seen any quite like these anywhere and in petite! So I did it! I hope my grandma body doesn't disappoint me in these and I will love them just as much now as I did then.

I love your style! It’s so inspiring. I think what you said about dressing to look slimmer says a lot about the damage done to women’s psyche. What is wrong with looking for comfort? I recently purchased a gorgeous spring green trench coat from JCrew (I look ghastly in camel), but I need some styling ideas to wear it so I don’t look like a billboard. I am 5’4”, 140 lbs., and have either a true or soft summer palette.
