@@paulcaswell2813 Hazelburn is delicious by its own merits. It may have zero peat, but it's probably one of the most coastal whiskies I've ever tasted (Kilkerran comes to mind). Granted the only Hazelburn I tasted was the 21 and a sample, so take this with a grain of salt. But yeah, you're not getting a hazelburn if you're looking for peat.
2021 : glad to have found this review, LCOB has it again for SAME 2014 price of 70$CAD, but bit darker in shade (ex-bourbon, but not as dark as the Deanston Virgin Oak).
Nice one Rob. Good to see a couple of classy 10 year old's in the mix. I remember talking to Roy a while back about how we've come full circle with whisky and how we can enjoy young whisky just as much as far more expensive old stuff. Thanks WT. Jeremy and I have had similar conversation. We never want to be in a position where a 10 yr malt is sub par because we are tainted by old whisky. There will always be a place in my heart for young whiskies. Glengoyne 12 and Springbank 12 are on the list of whiskies if I were forced to narrow my list down to 10 I’d take with me on the proverbial “island of no return”. Gives me a video idea actually.
Eeny, meeny, miny, both! Throw in Ben Nevis 10 too and I’m not sure I’d need another 10yo ever. Interesting H2H Rob, and agree that sherry (esp European oak) exaggerates the Springbank funk.
Thanks Roy. Need to try the Ben Nevis 10. It wasn't until I sat these beside each other that I realized how peated the Ledaig was. I've had good experience with each. Weird how that happens to me sometimes. I'm sure you flinched a little at my Glengyle gaff. More of a reason to come to Scotland soon, as an academic excursion to better understand the lay of the land. (Or at least that's the excuse I'll use.)
Ignore Roy and come to Wales (the true Britain), it's far more fun than those serious Scottish sorts. The Ben Nevis 10 is a Marmite whisky - good stuff but old style and depends on your mood. Think we're forgetting about ARDBEG 10 fellas. Hazelburn 10, Benromach 10. Shucks, there's a whole load of good 10 yr whisky out there.
Tried the Ledaig from a friend's bar. It was as good as any Islay 10 year old. I'm getting a bottle of my own now. Looking forward to starting, and finishing it.
Jeremy, have you tried the latest Springbank 12 yet? I think it has the highest bourbon to sherry ratio yet and quite a move away from the traditional 12. Last year's Springbank 18 was the first 100% ex-bourbon. Are we seeing less sherry from now on? I'm not a fanboy but Springbank is an intriguing distillery.
Very interesting comparison Rob! I like the Ledaig but wouldn't have thought it could hold its own to the Springbank. The price here in Denmark is more or less the same and I'd still go with the Springbank, but you at least have me considering if I should challenge my "default setting" a little more ;) A bit surprising with the G&M, they usually have a high cask quality making them able to compete with the OBs.
Rob, is it fair to compare Ledaig 10 to the Ardbeg Uigeadial? I'm almost at nauseam is saying that the Uigeadial is the only peated Scotch I've had... I was absolutely BLOWN AWAY by the Uigeadial
Hi Loknes, why no Springbank (out of curiosity)? I know all sorts of fancy, expensive, stuff gets reviewed but the core range of Springbank 10/Hazelburn 10/ Longrow, are all classics and often better than the unicorn releases.
Springbank 10 hands down! I would describe it as salty, slightly musty, citrusy and a hint of peat. But 110 CAD ?? Poor bastards, it's only 40€ over here.
I personally prefer the Springbank 10...however for me they are very different drams with very different profiles, so which one I drink depends on what mood I am in. Plus for me (in the UK) it is cheaper. My local has the Springbank 10 for £35 and the Ledaig 10 is £40. However, for an extra £15 I will just get the Springbank 12 CS every time. The latest one (September 2019) is really good.
I honestly thought I would have preferred the SB as well until I did this head to head. The SB12 is amazing almost every time. Definitely worth the extra cash.
Cant get these in BC. Luckily Im going to the UK tomorrow and they are already on my list of must try's (and maybe buys). Thanks for putting out this vid! Great timing!
Rob, really curious about Highland Park cask strength, have you reviewed it? I think TW has it now 🤔, so , trust your expertise in all- things whisky and I think it goes close to $90, is it worth the money, because I love cask strength, but kinda pricey for any liquid, juice whatever 😉 Again thnx for your time! That’s a decent price I guess. I only tried the first cask strength and didn’t love it. We did review it I just don’t remember exactly where. Cheers my friend.
Also I absolutely 💯 love Ledaig, I've been lucky to find it in 50ml minis, don't have 2 spring for larger btl. Also, what do you think of Tobermory, same distillery, great 👍 stuff/ w weird funk even more so than Springbank. Btw, can't find Springbank around anywhere near me in Tennessee, can U recommend websites who deliver to the States? Thnx Rob!
I love the Ledaig 10, but IMHO the Springbank 10 is clearly the superior whisky. The only instance I'll give the nod to the Ledaig is if I'm in the mood for proper peat (which is almost always. lol). I honestly think these two belong in different categories and it's hard to compare them directly. Springbank 10 is only lightly peated, I would prefer to compare it against something like a Highland Park or a Benromach (and if we're comparing the 10y olds, Springbank would eat both of these alive).
@@WhiskyInThe6 I pains me that I never tried a Benromach. In Brazil we kinda depend on what the independent sellers are importing so I didn't have the opportunity yet, but it's on my list. I would love to try the 15 even though it's only 43% which is usually a red flag for me.

In my humble opinion this was a strange standout......Ledaig against Springbank🤔...for me it"s like night and day... they are so far from eachother so it's not a relevant comparing🤔..... but it's just my personal opinion🌞🌞
Total wine loves to rip us off in Arizona this costs 79.99 in arizona almost exactly what you guys pay and I bet you guys pay less for the 15 and 18 anything with an age statement higher then 14 gets jacked way way up. 140 for glendronach 15 179 for the 18.
I am talking spring bank, they know you can only get it from a few places. A super market will not sell it. In the end we get ripped off. The cheapest way to buy single malts is to buy them online in arizona. it costs 190 usd for Glendronic 18 and that is the best price you can get in person. With shipping I can get it for less then that.
Apologies Rob. Love your videos mate, but I just wouldn't put these up against each other. I find Ledaig 10 is purposely peated by Tobermory, where as Springbank 10 is only very lightly peated. With Springbank holding back the peat for their Longrow range. Just my opinion of course. Cheers and keep up the good work.
Whiskey Novice that’s alright. If Longrow has a regular 10 yr I would have replaced the Springbank with that. To be very honest I have a lot of whisky to get through so at times I’m just happy to link common age stated whiskies.
