Springfield M1A Socom 16 Review
bit.ly/2CHLudt
I’ve always loved a modern aesthetic, but I still appreciate classic design, especially when it comes to guns.
The M1A has always been one of those classic guns that have always had my attention.
Not enough to make it a priority purchase but enough that it would stay with me for a few weeks when I remembered it.
However, after the very first time I shot it, I knew I had been depriving myself of one of the most beautifully visceral shooting experiences one can experience with a rifle.
This experience is akin to driving a muscle car, where being unrefined is a good thing.
Between the looks, the smell, the sound, and how they drive muscle cars overload you with sensations, and the Springfield M1A does the same thing, and I love it.

You just made me a dinosaur! M-14 was the weapon issued to me in 1967. Now I have the Socom model. Yup, at my age I feel your ecstasy and excitement squeezing the trigger, the gentle nudge as she pushes back on the pocket of your shoulder as she yells down range on target. Yup I have one and still shoot at 74. Iron sights. Fantastic shooter right out of the box. Had to have a little fun with your opening.

My wife made me cry IN PUBLIC. When I was 7 years old, I saw a US Marine with an M14. Fell in love. Back to the story,... 2 weeks before Christmas several years ago, she had me take her to the store to show her what I'd been looking at for two months. The salesman greeted me like an old friend. He picked out my M1A and handed it to me. I told her everything. SA M1A, Loaded, competition everything. The salesman asked if I wanted him to box it up. I told him I was still saving for it. My wife leaned over my shoulder and said, "Box it up for him." As I was filling out the paperwork, a man wearing a USMC VETERAN VIET-NAM cap, came over to me and told me "Congratulations. The one behind yours is mine" After my old vet gunsmith and I mounted a Weaver 4-20X 50 Grand Slam Tactical scope, (high mount), on her, we got her sighted in. At 100 yds, the hole from 5 rounds of .308 measured .341of an inch. At 400yds, she puts 5 rounds in a quarter. I fired 5 rounds at 1000yds, at an old paint can top. First round missed low. Second was left by 5 inches. The last three hit the paint can top. God knows I LOVE this RIFLE !!! THANK YOU, WIFE!!!

Someone I know has both an AR-10 and M1A. The AR is custom built with medium weight Rainier barrel, free floating, and sweet. Mia is the Springfield "Loaded" version with medium weight bbl. Mister AR cannot keep up with Mia! Even with the stock tupperware stock on Mia, but in a lead-sled with me taken out of the picture, she did a 5 shot group of 5/8" at 100 yards, and reloads instead of factory ammo. Again, this was on a sled and I was not able to mess things up. But, wow, the M1A is amazing. I tend to think that the AR design is better, but... there is something magical about an M1A. I WANT my AR-10 to be better because I built it, but Mia is the best. She can't be beaten, and I don't know why.

This gun was my first choice for a home defense rifle straight out of college (VMI where we were trained on M-14’s anyway). It’s an old, simple, proven, rugged platform that hits like a hammer at 500+ yards and gets the job done. It is, as Colion said, a battle rifle. It’s also gratifying to turn heads at the range when you pull this out next to the AR and AK guys and just start dumping .308 downrange. Great review, very well-put, instant sub from me. Keep up the great work!

A few years back my local big chain gun store had a grand reopening at one of its locations. They sent out flyers announcing it and that the whole store was on sale including 5 or 8 Springfield M1A standard models at $500 off retail. Now I works nights and the store open it's doors at 8am. So I stayed up and left my house around 5:30am to beat the crowd. Got to the store just before 6am with a line around the building and down the street. At a little after 7am store personal announced that the allocated M1As were sold out along with some other firearms. So I was pissed but I thought if I didn't get one of those m1a on sale I would get a desert eagle. Well after 3 hours standing in line I literally said F it grabbed an m1a loaded and a desert eagle in brushed stainless both technically on sale. With what they discounted off the price I basically got free DROS fees, county tax, background check and partial state tax. Now I own two firearms that are icons and always draw attention at any range.

Ash Hess, a former U.S. Army NCO with four combat tours and extensive experience as a marksmanship instructor, described stripping down the M14 EBR to clean them prior to a deployment as tripling the inaccuracy of the guns, from 1 MOA to 3 MOA, as the chassis had to be precisely torqued together for the guns to be accurate. My Scout prints 3/4" groups at 100yds with 165 grain loads like clockwork. And with that amazing muzzle brake I can mag dump 20 rounds in a 10" circle like butter on a hot knife. Yeah, and most folks don’t have Mickey Mouse ears lying around to slip on quickly. I’m looking into the tactical ear buds which allow you to hear at normal levels…..but slam shut for protection at sharp noises like gunshots. They tout them as adequate for shooting rifles, although ‘in-house’ you’re likely having to grab your .38 or 9mm or what-not. Anyway….something to look at. As it is, when I go to the range with my M1A, I’ll have my Mickey Mouse gear on. 😊

About the safety: I've owned an M1 Grarand for about 20 years now and I just got this SOCOM16 last spring. (both have a lot of similarities including the safety) I like it - especially in a combat situation I think it makes sense because you can leave the safety on pretty much all the time - draw the gun in a quick ready to fire position - put your finger on the trigger and you instantly feel the safety which you can snap off in an instant. Your gun is still new but once it gets worn the safety will be easier to manipulate.

The M1A platform is awesome in my opinion. I have the Scout Squad version, that I purchased along with a DSA FAL and PTR 91 when everyone (mainstream media) projected Hillary to win. Of the 3, only the M1A fed all ammo without issue. Because of that, it’s the only one I kept. I haven’t looked back.

I b I 8ght a lot of cheap Malaysian and steel tulamo surplus ammo to run a Mas 49/56 conversion to 308... it choked or failed to ignite often. I blamed the ammo. Then I tried every failed round in the m1a... it ate it all and cycled flawlessly without ever feeling under or over gassed. The open lugs might cause her to fail an inrange TV mud test, but she runs like a thoroughbred in all the situations I've put her through.

@@ravissary79 Mine doesn't like steel cased, but neither do I. So that works Lmao But mines ate and spit out numerous quality types with no problem. The problem with their "testing" is that it's super unrealistic! I've put my M1A Scout through mud, sand, drug it behind my jeep for 100yrds and tossed it down a 45-50ft embankment 3 times. It ran just fine. It started to jam up with the sand, but you just ram the bolt back, drop the mag, run the bolt a few times and it usually works. If starts not cycling, just run it like a bolt-action. Something my Ar-308 didn't do so well. Nor did a few AR-15s. Once you get em jamming up...you gotta tear em apart and clean. Too tight of tolerance and no room for gunk!

I got an M1A Scout early in 2009. IMHO 18” is the right length for a shorter 308 rifle barrel, but 16” works fine too. I had an issue with the op rod hitting the base of the forward rail, hurting accuracy. Also the OEM rail was too high for me to get a good cheek weld with the Leupold 2.5x Scout scope (sadly discontinued). However, an Ultimak front rail solved both problems. The rifle is very dependable and nicely accurate. Plus I have lower 1/3 co-witness of the iron sights now thru the scope. Under 1 MOA at 100 yards off the bench with hand loads.
