I just started with Springtails and already see the huge potential benefits of using them. Well, I am still in a stage of experimenting - will certainly make more videos to show what and how.
Yes indeed! I already made some adjustments in my aquarium fish care routines for that - Grindal worms make now every third fish feeding. The other two feeding remains fish food flakes. It's all still experimental...I will get more details about that in future videos for sure.
Hello random bits! I got springtails from auction. They come with charcoal, but i have problem with collecting them. I use plastic lid like you but cannot gett them... Maybe 2-3 on the lid...do you have any other solution for collecting them? Cheers mate!
Thank you for the question! I have never considered culturing Springtails on charcoal for number of reasons - one of them is that collecting Springtails from charcoal is problematic. There are three ways of collecting Springtails from charcoal that I can think of. 1) Put a sheet of plastic on top of the charcoal to cover it partially. Flip the container while holding the charcoal using plastic and shake springtails into another container. That may work only if you have fairly larger population of springtails in the top part of the container. 2) Fill up the container with water. Springtails will stay on the water surface (they are too light to drown). You can blow Springtails of the water surface into another container. Or pour the water with Springtails into another container. Keep in mind that this method would slow down the reproduction rate in the container (the main reason I don't want to use charcoal for culturing). 3) Don't moister the springtails culture. Place the open container with Springtails culture into a larger container. Make sure to moisten the larger container, you may put some moisten medium into the large container, and cover the large container. Springtails are great explorers attracted by moister. Give it a day or so and you may see Springtails into the large container. Best regards!
Michael, you could start small cultures of springtails and sell them online. Small reptiles and amphibians will eat them as well as fish and they do a great job of eating the detritus in the bottom of terrariums and vivariums. Wonderful visuals as usual! Cheers
Thank you very much! I prefer to buy and sell locally. And I sell only excess of what otherwise is necessary for my fish and experiments - which leaves no much to sell. I am in process of making space for a couple projects involving terrariums. It is going to be interesting and will require constant supply of worms and springtails. So, my experiments on culturing on different medium is basically a preparation for what will come next year. I am looking forward of this new adventure.
Thank you. I've been experimenting with terrariums/mossariums on and off for many years. I even published some videos... And I actually in process of making space for a couple projects involving terrariums. Culturing Grindal worms and Springtails is a preparation for what to come. PS: the little containers where I culture Grindal worms and Springtails are miniature terrariums - you will see it in future videos ;)
Hey, I need some help. I made some flakes for my guppies as they were not eating the pellets. So i added pellets, dried shrimp for protein, garlic, peas, carrots, cucumber and a small piece of potato to act as a binding agent. After drying it in the oven I let it cool and then i gave some to my fish, but i observed that instead of floating, it sank right away. Did I do anything wrong in making it? Also how can I fix it? I made a generous amount as i have a lot of fish but it turns out that they dont float and the ones that do float only float for a few seconds or start sinking the moment the fish try to have it. What can I do to prevent it from sinking? Pls let me know. Then i will add wateŕ to the flakes and then remake it. Pls reply. Pls.
I think I already answered your question in the comment on different (related to it) video. Just recap - making flakes thinner should resolve that problem. So, blend it again with water and pour thin layer to dry. And making smaller batches with different ingredients works better in general. All the best on your adventure!
Springtails are actually really good for the environment and a sign of a healthy ecosystem and they turn mold and algae into fertilizer for plants very quickly so they're great to add to terrariums
Springtails are really great for terrariums as a cleaning crew feeding on detritus. Though, turning mold into fertilizer is not something this particular strain does. Here is my video explanation about this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zwTerzRZG-c.html

So many times when i tried to breed springtails, there was some grindal worms in the soil i used. Always grindal worms breeds faster from nothing, theres so many of them that they kill all springtails. Probably they eat springtail eggs and hatchlings....
Springtails and Grindal worms live in the same environment. And Springtails feed on waste - including the waste from Grindal worms. Springtail males drop sperm everywhere they go for females to pick up. It could be that Grindal worms smear the sperm of springtails render it unusable. Though, I don't know for sure...
@@tritonreptiles7658 Density population goes up and down in repeating pattern governed by the same rules for all species (except human). I keep springtails with grindal worms in the same containers harvesting from both cultures as they grow big.
They are white worms living on land in high humidity environment and growing up to about 1 cm long at room temperature - one of the best live fish food.
@@zoo04031970 I've been working on videos to show how I do that 🙂 I have a colony of Springtails (and other critters) on the land part of my paludarium for many months - it seems to work.
I'm itching just thinking about them just like when someone talks about head lice you can't help feeling itchy no thank you they're to good at adapting to new environments as long as there is a little heat and moisture they will multiply they will be all over your house if you aren't careful here in north west England it rains a lot and most of the year it's damp before we got gas boilers infestations of spring tales in people's homes was common
I think you're overexaggerating the problem, I keep them in UK in an open terrarium and multiple cultures. Almost all terrarium hobbyists keep springtails. The odd few escape but will die as it's not enough for a colony establish.
