I was on the road and the dealer in Haggerstown, MD replaced the starter relays. That was the first step authorized by MB. The problem was still there and the next step was the transmission valve body. That is where the switch that knows it is in park is located. The next dealer on our route was the dealer in Wappinger Falls. NY. They ordered the part for us a swapped it out, that seems to have fixed the problem. So far, it has started everytime now.

Do you remember what your instrument panel and warning lights showed when it wouldn’t start? I intermittently have this issue, all lights light as normal and go out with the exception of the check engine light. After about 15 to 20 minutes of cooling down the van starts right up. Has only happened three times but twice in two days on my recent trip, all have happened after fueling but feel that is coincidental. Glad to hear your problem was resolved!

You Sr. saved my Birthday dinner, we made reservations for Birthday dinner, we went to wrong restaurant, tried to start our Sprinter van, would not start. Tried and tried, it's getting late, we are stuck. I went on line, couldn't find any help, the went to you tube and asked, van won't start, you came up, we did what you said 2 times, it started, we were off, saved Birthday dinner. Thank you . My 2005 sprinter in the morning starts straight away, but once engine warms up the and you want to restart it, it won’t start it’ll give you a very hard time to do so .I thought glow plug issues so I change the glow plugs but still I have the same issue any idea what could be Stopping the engine to restart when engine warms up

It happened with my van too. i watched this vedio and reopen and shut all the doos and it works. Thanks for your idea. I think Its something with the security if you try to open doors without open the lock then it won't start so open and shut all the doors and try.

I investigated the web and found the likely problems. I then called MB and told them what was happening and what I thought the cause was. It took two visits to the dealer to fix it.

I have 2006 Gulf Stream Mini Vista on a Sprinter 3500C chassis. There are two safety disconnect switches on them. One is on the parking brake, and one is on the bump-out. Be sure that you have your parking brake all the way engaged and be sure your bump-out, if you have one, is fully bumped in. Then try to start it again. Sometimes that is the issue with the non start situation. Good luck.

Any luck? Same issue. Twice while at the fuel pumps after filling up the tank of my RV and once after stopping at an RV park check-in area.

Yes, it is fixed. The switch in the transmission that knows when it is in park was replaced.

Same thing in my 2007 Sprinter 3500 motorhome. Really driving me crazy. I’ve seen/heard of many possible issues. First thing I”m doing is getting a new key fob because the chip might be bad. Checking all the connections too. I’ll try this door opening thing too.

I drained the fuel water separator on my 08 sprinter it solved the starting issue.

My 2014 does the exact same thing. Dealer just wants to throw new parts and sensors but says they have no idea what to try next. I do the same thing with door open/close, park/neutral, key left to run before turning to start. I will try camshaft position sensor next as it occasionally starts with no issue, no cel. sometimes rough idle, may stall completely at intersection or while moving. Very frustrating and has been very expensive

It has worked perfectly now after the transmission valve body that has the neutral switch in it was replaced.

I have been in the Auto Industry over 30 years.I have Inspected over 1k lease vehicles per year all makes and models.Mercedes Benz Is NOT WHAT IS WAS BEFORE.Chrysler Destroyed The Nameplate,Sadly It's a Fact.A Brand New Sprinter Driven of the Dealer in 2014 within 2 Months Problems.Then More Problems Driving on the Highway Completely Going Dead on the Highway Scary.Their Should Be a Class Action Suit Against MB on all Sprinters,and MB Should Do the Right thing and Buy Back All The Sprinter Shit They Created.Or atleast Give the Buyers Options.A Nameplate Like MB Should Never Ever Let Garbage, a Known Defective, Product Be Sold and or Driven.That is Total Gross Negligence On MB hands.And it will Come back to Haunt them it's a matter of Time.It Hurts me I Love the Nameplate and Currently own W210 Diesels.But again,Mercedes Benz Will have Blood on Their Hands,When Consumers on the Highways Looses Their Lives on Account of Mercedes Benz Gross Negligence Selling a Sprinter that's a Death Trap.The Wiring Harnes is Defective,that's 1 of the most serious defects.The Rest are Nighmares,No Starts,and The 5 Restart Trap.AVOID SPRINTER,TRUST ME,NIGHTMARES. It has worked fine since the switch in the transmission was replaced. Ask your shop to look for the service bulletin about the problem.

Go by the pedals look up at at the steering wheel shaft. Hit it as close as you can under the dash with a hammer or a heavy socket ratchet wrench. It should shock the ignition to make the ignition turn on and turn to start. If that not working hit harder or hit the aluminum part on the steering colum closer to pedals, it will have wires connected to it. Hit that part hard and it should make the ignition turn to start tge van.

It was caused by the neutral safety switch in the transmission. Replaced that part and problem was fixed.

It was the neutral safety switch located in the transmission valve body. The van won't start if it thinks it's in gear.

Yes, it was fixed in Wappinger Falls New York at the Mercedes dealer. They replaced the transmission valve body, that’s where the neutral safety switch is located.

Seems like an ignition barrel fault or possible starter relay sticking.

Same problem here. 2017 Sprinter, 2500, 9,000 miles. I get the same dash readout. Only happens after driving for a few hours or more at high speeds and then stopping to get fuel. I took the vehicle to the dealer and they said they could not duplicate the problem, therefore could not fix it. It starts after about 10-15 minutes. Has happened about 5-6 times now. One time, I turned and locked the steering wheel and it started. Another time I disconnected the switch near the gas pedal and then reconnected and it started, another time I got out, locked the car with key and then unlocked it, got in and it started. All of these things that I tried were about 10-15 minutes after I stopped the vehicle to get fuel. So, very hard to tell if any of these things were the solution or if the malfunctioning part had cooled enough to start the vehicle. Tried starting the vehicle in Drive and Reverse but will only start in Park and Neutral. Vehicle is under warranty.

One problem is the time from when you go to the dealer until they work on it. You park it and turn it off, go inside and give the keys to the service writer, they wait for the driver to take it to the service bay. So basically 10 minutes have passed allowing it to cool, so it might start depending how hot it was. It's tough to duplicate it when want to.

It was the neutral safety switch in the transmission valve body that prevents starting if in drive. It would stick when hot thinking it was in gear.

I can problyv tell you what your problem is. There are 3 relays in the fuse box assembly mounted on the front of the steering column(at least on earlier models). The sockets for these relays have fork type contacts which in my case two of these contacts had broken pins with only connection on one side moving these relays sometimes provided contact other times no contact. I think many of the problems detailed on You tube could have this problem.

The problem was the relay in the transmission that prevents starting when in drive. Mercedes replaced the transmission valve body where the relay was located. With your problem I can see that happening for many problems people have. Thanks for your input.

Or it could be a grounding problem. There should be one single ground wire. Check if its black, burnt or damaged. If you cant see anything its an easy way try to grab a bottle of water and pour it on the ground wire connection. If it starts then theres your problem

Maybe it's not sensing it's in park take it out of gear put it in neutral try to start it neutral put it back in the park use your hand to push it up while you're trying to turn the key

That’s what the problem was, a sensor that knows it’s in gear was sticking when hot. After cooling down the sensor would release and know it’s in neutral.

I have a Mercedes sprinter 2010. I have gone through hell and back because of being locked out by Mercedes software. I have spent at least $15,000 repairing this and that. Now my sprinter won’t start again.... Mercedes is a money pit Diesel sprinters are very delicate in colder weather not sure what climate you are in. If you have such a new van you shouldn’t be having any of these problems. I hope everything has worked out for you.

Try to see if the ECM is getting over heated. Try pouring some water on the ECM to quickly cool it.

This is a bad motor ground cable. Cheap test next time make you own ground from battery to motor case. If starts a ground cable only $14.00. Know failure. 1 click no start.

They should know exactly how started ? really here is a wake up call dealers are no the manufacture dealer they sale the product they hire a guy to do basic repair and do service most of the mechanics are train on a school for that specific vehicle wich in america is a joke all the dealers do the same they charge you a buco money for BS they are great part changers and charging for it but they are not high tech mechanics the problem is that manufactures keep adding more and more sensors to new units and they don't fix the problems on the old units and old sensors diesel are very simple engines on there on so are gasoline but they keep adding more and more electronics to it and the one thing about electronics is that is not reliable if they making run for ever they don't make money so here is a good advice finde you self a good mechanic one that works on diesel engines and have lots of good business most of them work on industrial fleets or business fleets not dealers wen you buy a house you go to a real state agent he is a agent knows how to sale you and BS does not know a anything about building a house car dealers are the same and here is the good part the manufacturer of cars don't have a open line with dealers for repairs or parts that is BS I spend 30 years on the industry is a mechanic

Dealership disdoes what the code reader tells them to do they don't confirm any of the information or actually look at the part to see if it's broken Is not mechanics just part changers

First thing I did was change the batteries in the remote. This did not fix it. Will be getting a new key this week. Maybe it’s the chip in the remote. My engine is still not starting all the time.

Mary Woods your problem is 100% not the engine. It has to do something with ground wires. Starter motor ground wire and the main ground wire which goes from the battery to the chassis. Its easy to do that. Just take the appropiate size ratchet and take it off, grab some scotchbright or sandpaper, clean them, make sure they make proper contact.

Some people said to try opening and close the door. The problem was the transmission neutral switch sticking. That made it think the transmission was in drive.

It's funny everyone thanking this couple for ranting about their vehicle while they didn't git any real solution. You're missing the point of the video. They are complaining not giving any advise or a solution in here. Anyway, first check all fuses, relays and fuel bump, if nothing works then unplug the battery for good 30 minutes, plug it back and give it a try. I know this video is a bit old but maybe someone will come across the same struggle in future trip.

Waiting 20 minutes gives the transmission time to cool down and release the stuck switch letting the computer know the transmission is in park, not drive.

I agree that there are so many possible failures because of bad designs. Like the windshield exterior water drain on my Transit that empties onto a electronic box.

Mercedes didn't even translate their manuals into English you have to know how to read German it's utterly German to actually be able to work on these cars it's cars how many dealership mechanics yeah lership mechanics regerman This is breaking US law by the way Dealerships are supposed to provide parts and manuals for a car for certain amount of years not in German is a loophole
