DIY install of a Blue Sea automatic charging relay. A charging relay will allow the starting battery alternator to charge auxiliary batteries and vice versa. When the charging source is removed the voltage regulator senses a voltage drop and separates the two batteries so that they are independant. @projectsprinter

Great video - thanks for all the detailed information and views. You've given me hope of completing something similar in my Mercedes GL. Everything is packed in so tight I was a bit discouraged.

You can probably find inexpensive volt guages on amazon that you can wire to each battery. A trimetric unit or a xantrex link will also do the job. I have the trimetric unit.

Blue Sea has a new one that's really nice... www.bluesea.com/products/1733/Mini_OLED_DC_Voltmeter . You could also go with a battery monitor system (more $) such as one of these www.bluesea.com/products/category/6/112/Meters/OLED_Digital_Monitors

Why not solder the terminals and throw a little heat shrink on it for aesthetics?

Is there power going to the switch at all times in this application? Or should you hook up to switch power?

You maximize your fuel use by also charging something, like a house battery.

Did you ground to the chassis near your house battery or did you run ground back from the starter battery? If so did you use 1/0 welding cable for that long ground run?

I have a 2017 sprinter which I am building out and want to include the BS ACR. Your video was very helpful and I never would have thought about going under the van (through the battery well). Brilliant!! A couple of questions: 1) it appears the ACR just uses the positive wire (from Sprinter battery to ACR to House battery). Is there also a need to wire the negative from the Sprinter battery to the House battery? 2) what did you use to seal up the whole in the bottom of battery well?

Great video. I have a mercedes sprinter with a battery under my hood and the start battery inside. I really like to know what my voltage is for both batteries is there a way to do this?

Hi thanks for posting the video I learned a lot from it. I'm currently installing my own on my 2016 170 2500. I have two questions for you regarding your install. First, did you mount your relay with velcro? Second, why did you not run your power to the switch from the house battery or even the terminal servicing the house battery? I suppose it does not really matter as you have the manual switch but I would think if you have the power supply to the remote on your starter and that went dead your remote switch would not work. Thanks for the answer and advise. I was also curious where you attached your start isolation? Not much out there about where to do this. Voltage surges can mess with electronics if not on the 12v cranking side. My van is for computer work so I have tinkered around for a good spot but cant find any beside having to take the dash off and attach to the crank side of the ignition switch. Some installers say they didn't enable this feature but I know how voltage surges can affect electronics so.... Any advise? Did you attach it? Thanks a million

Bino Monkey I have not connected the start isolation wire. If you google search for sprinter auxillary battery install instructions you will find that underneath the drivers seat there is a connection that is hot and a connection that is hot only when ignition is on. Pretty easy to access.

I found the connections mentioned in the Aux-battery-retrofit-guideline-NCV3.pdf and measured it with my meter. One of the terminals is hot when the engine is cranked but unfortunately remains hot. What you need I suppose is a line that is only hot while cranking the engine. This sends a signal via the brown wire to the ACR that triggers it to isolate for 3-5 minutes. I suppose it then checks for that signal once again after the 3-5 minutes and if it detects no more power from the 12V system, it will then charge the house batteries with a steadier amperage. Unfortunately, that means getting to the ignition switch or locating the starter solenoid under the bonnet. Please let me know if you have a better idea on this. Cheers

Does your rear aux cable that goes in through the large hole dump into the bottom of the wall cavity which required you to saw a hole in the bottom to pass through the wires? Also, it looks like you ran 2 wires.. Is that other one not related to the charge relay?

Japheth Yes used a metal hole saw with a small drill to make a hole in the cavity. The second wire is for my shore power connection which I will make a video soon.

Gareth Feldstein Hi, Yes I did. I believe i used a Blue Sea compact fuse block(150amp). It would definitely work without it but I wouldn't recommend it.

Any reason why you used a 150amp? My auxiliary batter is 12v 200AH would the 150amp be fine? Might install a breaker instead of the fuse.

Gareth Feldstein I had the same questions. I also have a 200amp alt. From what i see and have read your alt. will not put out more that 40amp to charge batteries anyways. I believe mercedes uses a smaller fuse when they do their aux batt. Set up
