Sprouting Lentils, Grains And Beans: Protein For A Raw Vegan Diet

While I personally do not recommend a diet high in complex proteins, I do think its important to understand some raw vegan sources for protein that are not the raw protein powders bought from the store. It's just part of a well balanced understanding of nutrition and health to know where to get raw vegan protein. Its also important to realize that raw protein powders bought from the store are highly processed, not raw and can be over consumed leading to toxicity and kidney damage. If you want to improve your health, lose weight, look and feel fabulous then a whole food raw vegan plant based diet low in fat and low in protein is the way to go. The shopping list at the grocery store should literally consist of only food that is un altered from its original form; fruit, vegetables, nuts, seeds, some grains and some legumes.

I’m a little intimidated by sprouting. I live in a mostly humid climate and worry about the mold that can form. Also would have been nice to see the different stages of sprouting, imma more visual leaner. Thank you for sharing you knowledge! 🙏🏻🌈🌺 Aloha

Rosalie Clark good! Keep going with the sprouting. It takes a while to get the hang of it and also to find your favorite sprouts. I find broccoli sprouts kind of finicky and hard to grow where as alfalfa, clover, radish, all a breeze! Lentils are my favorite and I have them everyday. However the gut needs time to adjust, so expect indigestion from legume sprouts for many months. If you do the work to adjust you’ll be free from cooked starches and proteins forever!!! It’s so liberating!

Shane I am raw but i must admit i do miss black beans and white jasmine rice although i know from a nutrition standpoint they are little in nutrition compared to fruits and greens

I understand the temptation but I don't miss black beans and rice at all. I believe that's because I have spent enough time without it. My microbiome has adjusted away from the cooked starches. I do frequently have sprouted lentils though. For me I get the same satisfaction from spouted lentils that I would from cooked beans. Every time I eat living food i feel so much better. Give it more time Ravi I think you'll find you will do just fine, if not better, without cooked rice and beans. Much love and success to you on your journey!

Could sprouted buckwheat be eaten safely in large quantities as as the main ingredient of a meal? In the video you mention using it in small amounts. I'm sure getting most of the days calorie from raw fruit is ideal but in the case that no ripe fresh or sun dried fruit is available due to insufficient funds, lack of store availability, or some weather/worldly disaster, is eating sprouted buckwheat in large quantities a good backup plan? As opposed to the popular approach of cooked potato, sweet potato, or rice that people tend to lean on for caloric sufficiency?

Awesome video! I'm weary of using sprouted chickpeas/garbanzos. Brenda Davis' book "Becoming Raw" says this: "Many legumes are high in antinutritional factors, such as hemagglutinins and trypsin inhibitors, and these factors are most effectively reduced by cooking. While soaking and sprouting also reduce these factors significantly, about 70 percent of the trypsin inhibitors and up to 25 percent of the hemagglutinins remain. The significance of these findings for human health is not known. It would seem reasonable to limit sprouted legumes that provide high amounts of trypsin inhibitors, such as chickpeas. If using sprouted legumes, lentils and mung beans would appear to be better choices."

Yes I fully agree that lentils are the best for eating sprouted. Chick peas are more of a once in a while for me but I do find sprouted lentils to be quite easily digested and very delicious. I used to cook lentils regularly as a cooked vegan but I actually prefer them raw now. My intuition leads me to believe raw sprouted lentils are better for my health than cooked lentils. Overall limiting most legumes is probably the best. I much prefer high water content fruits and vegetables! For sheer variety and especially for social occasions raw hummus is good to have in the repertoire.

Ah yeah, that makes sense! Yes, I recently out of health necessity started eating all raw after a few years of cooked vegan. I really enjoy sprouted lentils now, and also used to love the cooked kind. I believe they're more healthful this way too. Brenda Davis also talks about "blue zones" and how they all consume legumes. She also eats them but from what I've heard in her talks she eats them also mostly raw and sprouted.

i don't know if I agree that raw protein powders are not considered raw, by that logic i can say spirulina and chorella powders is also processed. If you weight train and want to build muscle you do need protein there is no way around that, and a plant based protein powder such as garden of life or vivo life is a great way to get protein .

Yeah I agree Ravi. I like the garden of life protein powders. Weight training and building muscle mass is important and having good sources of raw vegan protein is essential. Between whole foods and supplements its easier than ever to meet our protein needs for muscle growth without compromising!

Hey Shawn, great video, very informative. what are your thoughts on anti nutrients in legumes and seeds? do you think sprouting is better for digestion than eating cooked beans for say?

Hey Miguel, anti nutrients are removed when sprouted. All nuts, seeds and legumes have an enzyme coating that discourages animals from eating them. But soaking in water removes the enzyme. This is why Squirrels burry their nuts. It’s not to store them for winter but rather to remove the enzyme coating. Very ingenious those squirrels! For the best health and digestion I think it’s better to avoid most beans in large quantities whether raw or cooked. Really these complex starches are a burden on digestion and the organs of elimination. If you really want to eat legumes just have them sprouted in smaller quantities and you’ll be fine. Have you been raw for a while or are you just starting?

I´ve been raw for a year before and now getting back to raw foods, the only cooked foods are basically mucusless as mentioned by Arnold Ehret´s work. Just wanted to know more about the process of sprouting. Totally agree, these type of foods, such as nuts and seeds, legumes, should be eaten in moderation as they are very complex, I try to focus on the fruit mainly and some fats just to balance out a bit, because only on fruit you feel like you´re about to take off jeje :)

what are your thoughts on sprouted or soaked grains that are then cooked to consume, wont this just reverse much of the process? I have many body aches and pains as well as digestive issues and really want to take the next best steps to relieve myself of these symptoms very soon.

I will sometimes have sprouted buckwheat or sprouted groats but i think its best to avoid all the gluten grains. Even if sprouted they should be consumed in smaller qualities. Cooked grains are just useless to the body and cause congestion and burden on the pancreas. I personally don't recommend cooked grains in any form.

Just wondering, I use the Health Force Vitamineral green powder that also has Spiriluna in it. Do you think thats a good amount/enough of Spirulina or would you still recommend their additional powder?

Jalen Sills Hi thanks for the comment! Vitamineral Green is an excellent product. I used it for years. I do think having the spirulina is worth it though. Personally I like being able to control how much spirulina is in a smoothie for protein. Since I started buying the Health Force spirulina regularly I havent bought the vitamineral green. I think you should try getting a bottle of the spirulina and see how you like it! 🌱

I’m doing a raw detox. Have been told baked sweet potatoes are best cooked food if we need grounding or steamed veggies during detox and healing. Would you say the right raw sprouted grains/beans/legumes would be more beneficial for healing than those cooked foods while doing fruit detox?

Hey there Jay, If you're doing a fruit detox the most easy thing to digest will be the steamed veggies and starches. Sprouted legumes and grains might take a little more time for your microbiome to be able to digest them well. It took me at least a year of eating only raw to be able to digest sprouted lentils well and now i love them! I eat them all the time. Instead of eating cooked food I might suggest juice fasting. Stopping all digestion really helps the body detox more easily. Fresh made green juices and fruit juices will provide energy and calories without interfering with the elimination of toxins.

Just finished a 10 day apple juice fast 2 days ago boy that was a challenge saw huge improvements in my healing though. Have a tribest coming in soon Can’t wait to try my first green juice, have been told by a few coaches all fruits is best way to go for healing I’m sure a green juice would curb a craving though in lower times thanks again for that and please keep the content coming! 🙏

@@jlincoln878 Juice fasting doesn't slow down detox it just allows the body to eliminate way more easily. But you only do it for shorter periods of time like a month or so. Eating fruit is great but still requires a lot of energy to digest. If you dont want to do a juice fast and want to stay on a fruit diet then use steamed veggies to slow detox.

Whats up man. Merry Christmas! After our last conversation I’ve been thinking a lot about fully raw and I think I want to give it another try. I do miss the vibrancy I had at fully raw. This time though I’m going to be including more protein. I will be using a hemp protein powder in my smoothies. Thats an extra 20 grams of protein right there. I’m adding in Sprouts, right now i’m currently using lentil sprouts. I add about 1/2 cup to my green smoothies. Plan on doing that twice a day. I also purchased the healthforce Spirulina along with the Vitamineral green powder. A couple of small questions. Would you recommend the sunflower sprouts over the lentil sprouts? I’m only using them for added protein in smoothies. Are they more easily digestible, better taste, protein content? And also is 1/2 cup a good amount? And last question lol is 1 tablespoon of the Spirulina enough or should I aim for 2 or more? I really would appreciate the reply. Thanks again your videos and I hope you enjoy the holidays (:

Hey Jalen, Congrats on purchasing the Health Force products! They are the best! Green smoothies are one of the secrets of a raw vegan diet. Anything green is going to have amino acids and also tons of minerals which is great for energy at the gym, recovery time, and building muscle. Its funny because i'm so skinny in this video. I had just come off of a serous amount of fasting and cleansing and was at my lightest weight ever as i was still in the transition process to becoming 100% raw vegan. Since the making of this video I have put on some serious muscle mass working out at the gym and Ive had a lot of ease and success doing so. The real key to building muscle is hypertrophy in the gym. After that make sure you are eating adequate calories to grow. You have to be in a caloric surplus to grow muscle tissue and raw carbs are amazing for this. 75-80g of protein per day is great and more than enough especially in the form of spirulina and greens. These proteins are so much more available for our body that it changes the whole equation of protein needs for building muscle. I would definitely eat more sunflower sprouts than legume sprouts. Even though lentils are good they are no where near as energy giving as sunflower sprouts. When I make sunflower sprout smoothies I literally fit in as much as i can into the blender probably a few cups or sometimes more. You just have to experiment for yourself and see. Everything you've described sounds like a winning combination for longterm success as a raw vegan. For me the key to working out, feeling good, looking good and staying raw is to make high calorie smoothies with bananas, dates, flax, chia, hemp, spirulina, greens and protein powder if desired. One smoothie can have 50g protein and 1000 calories! Work hard at the gym and have two of those smoothies a day, along with your other meals, and you will be rockin!!!

Have energy, vitality, feel like a kid again and just have that appreciation for life which I feel like can be reached through a truly clean and healthy body and mind. And as of the sunflower sprouts. Are these just raw sunflower seeds I can find at maybe a whole foods and then sprouted?? Also, so I’m currently adding a tbs of chia and flax to my green smoothies before and after the gym along with the hemp protein powder. Are the sunflower sprouts gonna be higher in fat and maybe a little over board on fat or do you think they’ll be just fine?? Compared to the lentil sprouts.

@@JalenSills By the time a sunflower seed sprouts the fats have converted. Sunflower sprouts are not high in fat like the seeds. What they are high in is amazing life force energy! Sunflowers are one of the fastest growing plants on earth and are delicious, nutritious and fun to grow! Compared to lentils they are probably the same for fat content, which will be low, but higher in energy and digestibility. Also you must sprout the black oil sunflower seeds from the hardware store or garden store sold as birdseed. Get a big bag for dirt cheap and sprout in a jar first and then transfer to a tray with soil for best results. The kind you eat at whole foods isn't the right kind. I made a video on how to sprout sunflower seeds. We definitely need to be eating raw, unwashed, unsanitized food. If you are deficient in B12, and 40% of Americans are, it is because there is no naturally occurring bacteria in the diet. Being afraid of raw food is absurd. It only promotes life. Cooked food poses far more risk to our health than raw. In fact, I grow sunflower sprouts in fresh homemade vegan compost in order to ingest as much bacteria into my gut as possible. This is the true probiotic. One of the reasons humans are so sick is because we are afraid of bacteria that is essential for health.

@@RawVeganRising I so agree with you about eating our food with all the healthy bacteria but I remember when my mother used to sprout she ran into problems sometimes with the sprouts getting moldy. Have you run into this issue and if so how did you deal with it? Love your channel btw and so glad I found you!

You're right. I was skinny in this video. I was going through my raw food transition and still in detox phase. Amazingly all my weight came back but healthier and better than ever. If you look at my newer videos you will see how much more I weigh. My journey into transitioning to a 100% raw vegan diet has taught me that things get worse before they get better. Our bodies are sick from the cooked food and animal products and being afraid of what people think of us as we heal ourselves is only going to hold us back.

Raw Vegan Rising i have been trying to be vegan from last 3 years. I would admire and appreciate you if u can give me a raw vegan diet on which i will not feel hungry all the times and I don’t look weak. Please make a video on that or just give me a diet plan here.
