It's a bicycle handle meant to take on beating... I got plenty scratches from brake and shifters when mounted, this mount actually deters thieves from easily taking it off as I park my bike in the city. I usually just add a piece of leather scrap on the bottom and the "scratching issue" is immediately solved
look up helicopter tape. This is what people use when mounting things to their bikes to protect the finish. I picked some up from 3M and it's nice stuff that will last a long time.
