Could the Spyderco Sage 5 Lightweight be considered the very best folding EDC knife made? Check out this hands-on review to see if Spyderco combined their best design, production, and value wisdom in this homage knife model, #5 in the Sage series. Then head on over to SMKW (www.smkw.com/spyderco-sage-5-...) to get one while they still got 'em. Or, for the CF laminate over G10 version, go to Knifeworks (knifeworks.com/spyderco-c123c...) or Knifejoy (knifejoy.com/spyderco-c123cfp....
To see the inspiration for the above question, see Metal Complex's The Very Best EDC Folding Knife series at ( • The Very Best EDC Fold... )

I’m fairly new to EDC knives, and this boi was my first Spyderco. Love it!

I’m blown away by the quality. I love the m4 steel and spyderco heat treatment but the action and ergos are amazing. I can’t believe I’m saying this but the Sage m4 has taken over my Oz Roosevelt as my go to edc. 😬

Hey thanks for stropping by to let me know - I try to keep a decent pace so people have time to see a few different reviews before spending their hard earned money.

I think a lot of people who dismiss FRN as "cheap plastic" are missing out on an amazing material or greatly overestimating their "need". My 20 year old clip-it Delica looks amazing considering how much it was carried and used (I took it with me across 10 countries as an EDC including a things like camping in the Kimberley region of Australia and hiking in Thailand) and it's FRN and AUS-8.
@MitchBollig

Agreed that FRN is not terrible (Listen to Andrew Demko and FRN/GFN are essentially his favorite user handle materials due to being light, tough, and excellent texture-holding capability). Having handled many knives, I still prefer the feel of micarta and it's ability to absorb oils and waters and still provide great grip, and I even just prefer "the feel" of G10, but Spyderco with their bi-directional texturing has nailed it on many models - including this one! Thanks for stopping by.

I couldn’t find one when I needed a new knife. I went with a Para 3 LW instead. You are right about availability. No one else mentioned that.
@MitchBollig
@MitchBollig 2 года назад
Nothing wrong with a Para 3 LW - I have 2 of 'em, and they are definitely uber-lightweight greats. As for the availability thing, there are (for now) some M4 versions in stock at BHQ, and SMKW still has the S30V's at current check. It's tough to know in this crazy world which knives will take off like wildfire (except those which Nick Shabazz and Metal Complex specifically call out as champions...in which case, you can take it to the bank they will sell out immediately :-)

If I had a nickel for every time you opened and closed the knife in this video, I’d be rich…! I bought a Spyderco Sage 5 LW and absolutely love it..! My EDC at the time was the PM3 LW but love the Sage 5 LW’s blade shape more and the fact that it has full liners. I appreciate your great review video..!!!

Hey thanks! And thanks for stropping by to check it out and comment! The Sage 5 LW is definitely a top choice. 👌 👊

My first modern knife was a Para3 which I promptly lost. Replaced it with a Para3 LW which I love, but I think if I were doing it again I'd go with the Sage.

The sage 5 with the compression lock is a very compelling alternative to the PM3. Thanks for stropping by to comment!

Great video. I am actually on the edge of picking this or Para 3 LW as my first spyderco. What would be your choice?
@MitchBollig
@MitchBollig 2 года назад
Hey thanks! For me, I would go for this one first (and I love and have owned various PM3's for over 7 years). The primary reason: the full steel liners on the Sage 5 notch it for the win over the LW in my book. With the Sage 5 in hand, I could also take my time to find the right PM3 ;-) - there are so many different alternatives that come out in LW and full G10 (BD1N/M4/REX45/S45VN/S110v/Maxamet/etc).

That's gonna be sweet in M4! I don't know how it's going to look in person, but on camera it looks like a grasshopper cocktail - delicious.

So they not make other steel/color variations of this knife?

The only one I know of is the M4 steel mint chocolate chip one at BladeHQ (www.bladehq.com/item--Spyderco-Sage-5-Lightweight--137712)

Lightweight pocket knives are only advantageous in the most remote circumstances. Are you wearing only boxers? Are you wearing swim trunks? Come on...this is totally a marketing gimmick pushing cheap, plastic scales for gullible consumers. I go the TI way and love a Para3 with some heft.
@MitchBollig
@MitchBollig 2 года назад
I love me some Ti scales too (OK, many many Ti scales) - check out my Bugout conversion. As for grip in the hand though, especially if wet, the texturing on this injection-molded nylon is gonna hold better...of course, contoured micarta would beat them both ;-)...which brings up the point that most everything is a series of trade-offs in the end. Thanks for stopping by!

I actually prefer knives around or under the 3oz mark. My most carried knives for the last year have been a SAK Classic SD or a Case Caliber, both under an oz. If I need more blade, I'll grab my Opinel 7 at 1.1oz or 2.3oz Ganzo 759FM Delica clone. If I need anything more than that, I'll just grab my fixed blade Mora. I have a big, heavy Kershaw, and an even bigger, heavier Benchmade, and I never carry them. With everything else I carry, it's nice to not feel too bulky or weighed down, especially in Ohio humidity or Arizona heat... And I very rarely leave the house in only my boxers!
