If the word epic could be described as a "series of great achievements" then that description is appropriated for the Spyderco Sage series. Featuring different locking mechanisms from well known and respected knife makers, the Sage series showcase near perfect folding knife construction. Featured in this 3 for 1 Nutnfancy video review are the Sage 1 CF 123CF, Sage2 C123TI, and the Sage2 C123GBL. Weight on all three is a reasonable 3.5 oz or so and each features a beautifully shaped CPM S30V blade with an ideal tip (strong yet precise). Each blade came out of box with a wicked sharp edge with a near perfect relief grind. Ergonomics on these blades are excellent. Double finger choils on the bottom allow for perfect control and traction is high thanks to ideal jimping on both top and bottom of the blade. The hand locks into the Sage and this traction inspires confidence. It would allow for emergency defensive use in a pinch but mostly these are collectible or EDC blades (and a slammin' gift idea!). The Sage1 shows the improved "twill woven" carbon fiber scales that are both beautiful and show improved traction over the previous slick "epoxy CF" Spyderco used. The Sage2 is elegant simplicity at its best with its shaped titanium scales and frame lock. Like the Sage1 its shows the preferred pillar construction that allows for lighter weight and ease of maintenance. On both, note the recessed screws, showing the attention to detail in their construction. The Sage1 with its Michael Walker liner lock shows solidness of lockup and features aggressive liner milling to save weight. The Sage2 and its RIL demonstrate the attractive and simple strength of a well-executed frame lock. The Sage3 is simply gorgeous and unique. Its bright sea blue G10 handle offers excellent grip and strking looks. The Blackie Collins bolt action lock here operates smoothly and should offer excellent durability. The stop pins are massive in all three Sage knives. Also the speed, balance, blade retention, blade centering, and solid lockup are flawless; no defects whatsoever are noted. The heated treated stainless steel spring clips are perfectly executed: they carry deep and unobtrusively, they're light, clip firmly, and they're resistent to bending. This is one of my favorite clip designs. Value is high considering the quality and reference prices and other knife options are discussed. All together the Sage series shows what I now call "epic knife features:" true design excellence in key elements that combine to make the knife a Hall of Famer in TNP. Epic indeed. ////////////////////////Nutnfancy Likability Scale: Sage1 9 out of 10, Sage 2 9.5 out of 10, Sage3 9 out of 10

I got the Sage 2 about four months ago and it is, and will probably continue to be for a very long time, my primary EDC blade. I absolutely love it, it's trim, light, durable, comfortable to use, and (in my opinion) very pleasing to the eye. Also a friend who bought the Sage 1 after seeing mine just raves on and on about it, a great series of knives.

Had mine for a month now. A truly awesome pocket tool. Always on me must use it 30 times every day. Fantastic ergonomics. Can't resist flicking open. In my limited experience of high knives, I cannot recommend this enough. Will keep watching reviews, even though it will cost me a small fortune. Cheers

Gotta mention it...luv the way you always say "Jimping!", with a unique emphasis. Makes me chuckle. I see you turn over a knife or zoom into a particular area...and, I know what's coming. I am also a big fan of that, and will always look for it right off the bat in a design.

Spyderco needs to put Nutn on their payroll. I cant imagine how many Spyderco knives are sold everyday just because of his reviews. I bought both a Sage 1 and 2 after watching this video. I was already interested but the review really helped show off the features of them and, what gorgeous knives they are, reinforcing my decision to purchase them. I love his review style. You get the good and the bad and you can always count on his honesty.

Great review, nutn! Thanks for cranking out another fantastic video. I know you're not a huge CRKT fan, but you might want to check out the Ken Onion Ripple 1 and 2. Both knives are very similar - great EDC knives with a very fine point, and very handsome looking. The Ripple 2 has assisted opening, the '1' does not. They also have the new IKBS ball bearing system - great blade retention with very snappy and incredibly fast opening. Also no wiggle in the lockup.

First of all great video as usual. I own CF version for me it's a collectible blade, have carried it a bit and its amazing. I might be a bit off the line but i don't like S30V. Had bad experience with old Manix , the blade chipped on me form opening a can of peaches. Even in EDC role i preffer steel like AUS-8 that have tendency to roll edge if something and not chip it.

I love my sage 2. It's like a cheap version of the Sebenza! I just can't justify $400 for a pocket knife, I don't care how good the quality is on the Chris Reeve knives, so I settled on the spydie.

Good point on the RIL, nutn. I actually prefer a thinner liner lock to a thicker RIL since the former has a built in safety where the liner will bend and travel all the way over to a permanent locked position whereas the RILs tends to get wedged back out the way they came in. "But wont the smaller friction area make it less safe?" NO! According to Amonton's Second Law: "The force of friction is independent of the apparent area of contact." The one real + on RILs is slower wear on titanium locks.

Nutin, I have a humble request... If you haven't already done it I think SO many people could really use a tutorial video on how to properly sharpen a knife. I've destroyed some really great knives because I had no idea what I was doing while trying to sharpen them. Think I'll pull the trigger for the carbon fiber version. The blue is nice, and I'm already a fan of bolt-action locks (BM axis-lock), but the blue version 3 has a noticeably larger handle profile than the other 3. Surprised than wasn't mentioned. Wider up near the blade, and all the way back through the handle, and even longer past the carry clip. Just noticeably larger overall... Not sure if it has more thickness overall too, but the side profile isn't the same as the other 3...

One thing I would like to mention; the Sage 3 has a wider handle, while the 1 and 2 are identical in shape. I prefer the handle of the 1 or 2. I have a titanium handle Damascus steel Delica, but I like the G10 or Carbon Fiber or Zytel handles just a bit more. For me - the titanium is more for bragging rights than useability.
@danx033

Steel locks are actually more durable because they have the same strength as titanium but titanium is lighter and softer which makes it easier to bend out of shape.

Verry nice review.I´m going to buy an EDC knife and thinking about Paramilitary2 and Sage3. I try Para 2 in local knife shop and I love it,but they don´t have any Sage that time to compare.I chose the Sage3 because of the G-10 handle and the strong lock.IMO Sage1 and 2 are more gentlemans folders then working EDC.Which one do you prefer as a allaround EDC knife?

@bush0165 Not really at all.... The spring in the axis lock is a U shape vertically, the bolt action lock is a horizontal compression spring. The bar in the axis lock rides left to right in the knife body, the pin in the bolt action lock runs foreward and back. Externally they are similar, but they function totally differently.

I thought I was the only one who thought the sage 3 felt like a different knife. Its much chunkier, sticks out of the pocket more, and the blade is different from the other two. It almost has a slight recurve towards the back of the cutting edge and changes the ergos. I have both the sage 1 and 2, was going to get the 3 but when I held, I hated it. Felt weird in my hand and definitely wasnt the same as the other sages.

A Sage that isn't a frame-lock or a strong liner-lock, isn't a Sage at all. Reminds me of the time Ford wanted to introduce a new Mustang. One executive took one look at the new design and said, "That's not a Mustang!" So the design was never introduced under the Mustang name. (The design was later introduced by Ford as the Probe.)
