I finally just got mine in the mail and I am going to grind my flipper tab down ASAP. I love this knife but I gotta make that tab smaller for closing with the compression lock. I'm not sure if I'll completely remove it or just make it smaller.
I love the wire clip, but if they have up on left hand carry, they could integrate the lanyard hole into it by making it a part of the liner. It would really sit deep then
I like that the spydie hole isnt a protrusion like most of their classic designs and it still functions. Seems like the concept is a win overall even if the flipper was a redundancy.
Am I the only one that remembers watching this video before today?? Like this is really messing with my head.. was it re-uploaded? Because I know for a fact I watched this.
Boo!!! Am I the ONLY one here who applauded the flipper/compression lock combination?! I honestly found no problems with the detente or the flipping action. The Spyderco Southards were duds. The flipping action was atrocious and the asymmetrical scales didn't help. The Rubicon was a good flipper as was the Black Mamba but I really wanted a compression lock. I jumped at the chance to get a compression lock flipper and I was not disappointed. I just don't get why people are complaining about this knife. I measured the flipper tab and it stuck up 3/16 of an inch. That's negligible. If the flipper tab is that much of a deal breaker then why not just buy a Tenacious or any other Spyderco that's a good thumb hole flicker? I'm sure I'll get flamed for sticking up for it, but I think it's just about perfect and a true gem as is.
Graham Duvall Glad to hear that you like the combination after you got the knife, because compression lock flipper is what makes this knife interesting. Due to the huge discontinued list I could not purchase one now but I will for sure and I will definitely keep the flipper tab. Maybe Spyderco should collaborate with one of the guys who specialize in designs with front flippers...
Graham Duvall I agree wth you! Flipper did not bother me. Was the detent the best ever? Nope. But once you can feel the knife, Flipping it is not hard. I agree wth his original review in regards to using thumbhole. Spydy flicking is very easy as well as thumb. Flipper tab does not get in my way at all in regards to my pocket, and if I wanted to complain about the detent, I still would want that “finger guard” tab when blade is deployed. I’ve had this knife for 4 hours, and agree wth most of what Nick says. I just don’t care about the wire clip causing a hot spot, or if the flipper is not the best ever. It’s still a flipper, and it can also be deployed, quite well, wth normal Spydy hole deployment. All in all, it’s a gem! It brings me joy!!
Interesting. I LOVE the way the GRIPTILIAN works - THUMBHOLE & with their AXIS lock (Benchmade). I have FIVE Manix 2 in reg. & XL. So having said all that I have always thought that a perfect flipper would have a BIG Spyderco HOLE; a NICE flipper with a few notches in it; and a BENCHMADE AXIS lock. That would give you "3 ways to open IT!" MY perfect knife. A 3" 3/4" blade S30V (or 35) is very fine for maintenance. The BIGGER holes are nice; the well designed flippers protrusions are nice, the BENCHMADE AXIS is very nice; and PLEASE throw in a solid SPYDERCO carry clip. All my BENCHMADES are way easier to open with their locks than the 40 pound pull back on the MANIX's. I EDC ONLY my Manixs in many steel types. I have about 42 knives.... JUST SAYING...
Yeah, I always buy a knife to send it out for changes that cost me time and postage on top of the changes. I always buy $150 knives that need mods to be acceptable. lol The changes to the Nirvana cost much more. lol
Am I having deja vu? I remember you already uploading a video having cut off the flipper tab and saying the same things. I was surprised to see the Sliverax review because I had already seen it. Maybe I visited another reality briefly. More likely you did upload something with these talking points. What was it?
I thought the same thing.... He did a disassembly in great depth of the Sliverax a while ago. It pretty much included good, great, bad and ugly but wasn't in such form. A little later he uploaded a video called "Snick Preview: Spyderco Shaman, Omega Speedmaster, and the Flipperless Sliverax" This is where we saw the flipper less Sliverax. I thought i was going crazy!
Every spyderco with a compression lock and a flipper tab are better without the tab , I have just remove it from my amalgam and I am really happy with the result !!!
The flipper is the only reason I would want this knife. I do no like Spydercos because the thumb hole feels unnatural to me. I much prefer a thumb stud. I always wanted a compression lock knife...but that darn spydie hole. Then I heard about this knife. After watching this, I'm not sure if I should get it or not...
I think this model is pretty much a "fail" for Spyderco. It was intriguing to see the attempt at a compression lock flipper, but in the end I think they missed the mark. This is a great example of how even the best companies sometimes produce less than perfect models. I will say this about the post mod results. That is one of the best looking knives I have ever seen in the closed position. The nested blade and organic lines are fabulous.
Except the lines are messed up now, hard to call it a gem even if it came this way. When one of their most curvaceous knives ever gets a "meh", and the Shaman, flawed as it may be is at the top of the food chain, I can't help but think Spyderco really needs a wake up call. It takes some serious skills to make a knife that can be deployed multiple ways, and this knife was deeply compromised because of it. Stick with the Spydie hole and work on your game, boys.
Agreed, better w/o the flipper. As for those that decry having to mod a knife, I'm jealous of them that everything in their life comes tailor-made perfect to them. For the rest of us, it's all about that pursuit of happiness - and the work involved to get there. Cheers!
Shaked Tollman He's pretty chill about it, and claims to like seeing how people tailor his designs to their needs. He's responded kindly to several people who modded theirs in the Sliverax thread on the Spyderco forums.
This knife accidentally opened in my pocket while running away, with my 9 yo son, from a wild boar. I felt the heat on my thigh and the the wetness of the blood before any pain. Also I always got pinched in the tip of the finger when flipping it, so I open it like a Spyderco should be opened. I did carry it again, but inside a leather pouch. The built quality is very good and I like the short handle and low weight with this great blade. Wish the pocket clip were further back and it came with stronger detent, no flipping tab and no lanyard hole and a beautiful leather pouch like the one I bought separately.
I have had this happen many times myself but fortunately i have never had it cut me, maybe it's b/c i always have it on my hip rather than on a pocket, i plan to have my tab ground off as i consider myself lucky to have not had your experience
The flipper tab never hits your finger,. Why does nobody complain about the Amalgam where the flipper tab always hits your finger where you said no big deal you just move your finger out of the way. Paul Alexander deliberately designed the Sliverax so the the flipper tab doesn't hit you finger when using, kudos to the engineering genius of Mr. Alexander. You guys are a bunch of clowns. Reengineering another man's design especially when it was unnecessary. Very disappointed in you guys. What hypocrites, complain about the Amalgam where the complaint is legitimate
Spyderco needs to step up their game. All their knives are the same. You own one spyderco, you own them all. When they do come up with something different the price is usually way too much for what you are getting. This is just another shitty leaf blade flipper....YAWN.
Good to see i'm not the only one who finds them..boring. I've got the teeny-tiny Spyderco, Bug or something, as a novelty, but the rest of the line is either meh, or a bit too pricey.
I beg to differ, spyderco does indeed use the leaf blade shape a lot (but not nearly exclusively), but there is no denying how many different locks they use. Ball bearing locks, liner locks, compression locks, frame locks, back locks... I think people only THINK they look the same because of the hole, wich is so useful that i dont mind ot being on every knife they make. Not to mention their will to experiment. They make folding karambits, bowies... There is even a dagger style knife coming on its way. If anything, spyderco is way more original than other big makers such as benchmade, who use one lock (axis) on every damn knife. Or chris reeve, he doesnt make nearly as many models, but half of them still use the framelock (wich he invented, but spyderco invented the ball bearing and compression lock and they dont use those on literally half their models). If spyderco is boring, every knife maker who uses a blade and a handle connected by a pivot is boring. Thats just my two cents, but if your not attracted to spyderco i cant force you.
Le Lemon I own a couple dozen spydercos. Even with the different locks they are all the same. Some of their collaborations are cool, but they bend you over on the price. Not just collaborations, they want what $70 for a little Delica with FRN scales VG 10 and their crappy loose back lock? For $10 more you can buy a CS American Lawman which is 10 times the knife. I think their best knives are their Chinese budget line, everything else is over priced for what youre actually getting.
Skinny Moose like i said, if you dont like em, i cant force you. But price to me doesnt matter because i live in europe and paying too much for anything from the us is normal here with import taxes and stuff. I agree that their chinese line is great, i have a tenacious (wich i paid 90 god darn € for, as an example of overpricing by american brands here) and im really pleased with it. Havent handled one of their backlocks yet, but ill check the looseness of it if i ever get one. And lets be honest, most knife companies overprice the living sh*t out of collaborations, looking at benchmade again.
