Really enjoyed the video. I own thirty Spyderco knives, bought over the years before they really went up in price. Most have to stay home as they have locking blades, however I do have some of the slip joint variants. While I like them, they feel like a diluted version of the real thing and the tactical look could arouse suspicion. For UK EDC I will always go for a mid size SAK, I am more confident of the blade retention during use and they are much cheaper. Footnote:- Before the laws were changed I used to EDC a Spyderco Delica.
Great video Jon. I do have a soft spot for Spyderco and have a few all bought before the knife laws tightened. They are housebound only but I like to fidget with them and just like the tactile nature of them and the engineering and aesthetic. The knife laws are a bit stupid to me as a lot of knife crime is comitted with large kitchen knives or machete type blades. Just shows we can't have nice things.
Evoste you are absolutely right, most knife crimes are committed with kitchen knives. Not only that, someone who is of the type to stab another human being is not going to be deterred from carrying a knife just because of a law. It will only stop (read disarm) the law abiding citizens.
@@JonGadget I tend to use my Leatherman Charge TTi or a Swisschamp if I go hiking or camping as they are multi purpose and are less likely to spook members of the public.
The UKPK was designed in collaboration with the members of a now defunct UK knife forum called BritishBlades of which Sal was a member. I still have my design team edition which has 'UK Pen Knife design team' engraved along the back spring.
I had the standard UKPK and thought that was good until I bought this Heinnie Haynes edition of the Spyderco UKPK. This one is just so much better. Full back spacer and 4 screws unlike the standard 3 screw UKPK. The one I had locks so tightly it's amazing. With the better steel there is just no reason to buy the standard one here in the UK. Thanks for the video.
While I understand hesitancy to carry certain knives; if it's legal we should. Seeing people use a folder for regular tasks normalizes knife carry. It sends a message that an EDC knife is a tool not a weapon. I was carrying a Spyderco Delica here in the US until I lost it. I plan on getting another one because it's such a great tool.
Great video! Spyderco does a lot of great work but I think the UKPK is one of the many standouts. As you said, it's super well thought out/designed but also amazingly well executed in production for a okay price. Cheers!
Great video Jon, thank you for that. In Germany there are also some rules for knives (§42a), so this UKPK could also be a GEPK. I like Spyderco Knives and their design. I also like your videos, keep going and greetings from germany 👋🏻
Although I own a couple of the smaller, UK legal, Spyderco knives, I’ve never been a huge fan - I can’t decide whether I like the leaf shaped blade and they always seem a little over priced. An alternative you might want to consider, at half the price, is the Boker Plus XS drop point. It is non-locking, has an easy one-hand opening action with a thumb stud, a finger choil giving extra protection and is available in a Hennie Haynes special addition
Boker had nylon washers and an inferior steel, if they sorted that out it would be a winner no doubt. I've used UKPKs for years at work, they require no maintenance except sharpening. Awesome blades.
Spyderco makes some pretty nice knives. That one looks really good with the red G-10. I'd suggest the Buck 112 if it didn't have a locking blade. It's a shame UK politicians reacted so inappropriately to a few insolent people. Thanks for another great video!
Great review. My first "big boy knife" is a endura clipit in 1988. My current edc is an ukpk in bdn1 plus a victorinox camper with fireant tec clip and olight i1r eos. Even when I own over 100 knives and multitools. Ukpk has no metal liners to rust, is easy to sharpen, open back for easy cleanup. Signed up for the preorder but missed that window I am trying to complete my collection since own the other 2 versions of the ukpk as well lc200n and S110v.
great feedback Eric - sounds like you definitely need the s30v 😊 - I am sure they will release a 3rd batch, there should be a list you can join to get notified
The first video ive watched of this channel but I must say a superb and concise review and definitely reinforces my desire to purchase the blade. Great work.
In appearance, that UKPK strongly resembles my Sage5, which I like very much. The Sage5 has a compression lock though. I really like those red g10 scales. Enjoyable video Jon.
I have the FRN version with the softer steel - good nonetheless. Cheaper alternatives are the HH Pilar and Luna which I carry more often for fear of losing the costly UKPK. Thanks Jon.
Hi Jon I'm stationed in Germany with the U.S. Military and just pre-ordered the new cobalt blue UKPK in SPY-27 from BladeHQ for my EDC while i'm in Europe, as most of my knives are all locking, and i like to have a dedicated pocketknife. I also like that the 'colorful' slipjoints are not seen as threatening should i have to use the knife in public, though in Europe especially I try to be as discreet as possible. Im excited to get my first UKPK.
100% agree that thing will be amazing. A little rit dye and it'll be nirvanva. Love my native 5 salt for the same reason and I think it's similar to the UKPK in that it's a simple knife with a great design and nice execution in manufacturing. Basically the opposite of those Gerbers 😂. I laugh but it hurts, I want them to do well so bad!
Agreed, just wish it was cheaper 😭 the serrated UKPK Salt with the black hardware is gorgeous though, if I had one I'd definitely be dying those scales purple
I think it’s terribly sad how many people now see carrying a pocket knife as suspicious, strange or scary. It wasn’t long ago at all that it was so common place, no one thought twice. Even schoolboys would carry penknives! This is the kind of tragic situation that comes from the news holding a magnifying glass over crimes involving knives, which conditions people to respond with fear to the most common tool throughout human history. The stupidest thing of all is that those who are already willing to use a knife for criminal purposes are hardly going to care about a lesser law about not carrying certain knives 🙄. So in reality it’s the ordinary, non-criminal people like you and I that are punished by these irrational ‘laws’.
I completely agree. I was in the Boy Scouts and carried a 4” fix blade sheath knife as a kid when outdoors and going to Scout meet-ups, nobody ever thought this was an issue.
Ron from Indiana, Great video on a great knife. Here in Indiana I can carry any blade I want except a ballistic knife or a throwing star.If I'm carrying a tactical folder it's a Benchmade.
Like your watch 👍🏻. I’m a Swiss Army knife fan , single blade has limited use for me . The victorinox knives are innocuous and have many useful features. Great 👍🏻 video, thanks 😊
@@JonGadget it’s a strange fascinating 🧐 thing, but Saks are a design classic, why we enjoy this well made quality product ? I’m not sure 🤔 but it’s utility makes it something to appreciate. Lovely relaxed style you have and very enjoyable to watch. Thanks 😊
I picked up my first spyderco from same site. Fantastic knive for the UK Market. I have the black one and is worth every penny. Very surprised its UK legal to carry almost still feels illegal. Fantastic EDC
Ive never had much room in my heart for Spyderco, couldn't easily articulate why, either. But commendations to you for making a better case than I've ever heard before for getting a UKPK. Normally I rock just a SAK huntsman, and if I might need to split some smaller firewood I'll have a lanksy world legal at my side too. Another great video, thanks 👍
UKPK also has a salt version with LC200N. The steel is tougher than S30V, carries a very good edge (probably 2/3 the edge retention of s30v), very easy to sharpen, and completely rust-proof. It's probably the best EDC steel option until a version with MagnaCut comes along.
I wanted the yellow version. I see there is a neon green available although I wish HH did a colab with the salt so we can get those g10 scales and full back spacer. I own a standard UKPK tye latest version and have been eyeing up either the HH drop point version or the neon green salt UKPK
UKPK is a good choice for many, who want to carry a truly UK legal pen knife. Many alternitives that might be seen as better. The Tisted Asisted Junzi is just as competent as the UKPK with a more conventional blade shape. The King of UK 'workers' is undoubtedly the Spyderco PITS. Hard to get hold of but we'll thought out and much better performance.
I’ll stay out of the politics since I’m from the USA but I’m glad Spyderco is making knives for your market. Zero Tolerance also now has a slip joint and so does Chris Reeve but I’m not sure of the blade length on the Chris Reeve. Id like to see you’re opinion on those knives.
Hi Dale. I'm no expert but appreciate these are very high end, good to know there are some quality slip joints out there. No sure I will have the budget to properly review 🙂
Hello Jon, I’m currently deciding between this, the UKPK and the Hoo Knives v3 as an every day carry in the UK. Do you have any experience with Hoo Knives?
I find one hand opening a more useful feature than a locking blade, at least in a small to medium size knife like that. I carry an old timey Delica and I hardly even register the lockup, I can open and close the blade with one hand in my sleep! Needless to say, any legal limitations that make a tool less useful and safe are stupid.
THe usual excellent review from you Jon, thank you. I have a real first world problem, just CANNOT decide between this and the HH/Spyderco urban lightweight........Dang it !
Hi Marc - I've not had a chance to play with the lightweight but they look very similar to me apart from the scales - the HH UKPK is not available right now but I'm sure will make a comeback.
I purchased this knife when it first came out. Agree very easy to carry but I find it awkward to use. Ok for cutting string or whatever. Try using it to peel an apple 🍎 awkward I think. Might seem a silly criticism but to me a Swiss army knife is a far better choice.
I've got one and think it's great knife and it's probably the best UK EDC per your criteria. Buuuuuut ... naturally, it depends on your day. If you're making a few rolls or cleaning up some wild mushrooms or stuff from your allotment, a lock, Spidey hole or thumb stud just collect gunk. Something like a Manly Wasp or the current HH G-Slip limited edition have decent scales and steel are better suited IMPO HH
Real Steel do make some excellent modern slipjoints. I've got the titanium and N690 Luna and for a dedicated pocket knife, especially with a thumbstud, you can't really do better for the price. If I didn't already have the Luna I'd probably get the G-Slip compact
Spyderco makes some great knives. I didn't realize it but apparently I am guilty of taking certain freedoms for granted here in the USA. If you don't mind me asking, what is the reason for not allowing a locking blade? I can understand certain limitations on length of blade or automatic opening but it just doesn't make any sense to me to prohibit a locking blade.
Hi Jim, fixed blade knives were banned over 3" and then I understand a lawyer successfully argued that locking blades were the same as fixed bladed knives and so they were banned too!
@@JonGadget in the USA there is such a messy patchwork of laws. Each county, municipality, us state can have their own laws, so you will never know what is legal and what not in one place or another. Also you can get arrested and handcuffed if you are drinking a beer in a park or on a bench in a public street and you have no ID card on you. Moreover sentences are crazy long. A school teacher, Brittany Zamora, got sentenced to 20 years in prison for having sex with an underage male student. In most EU states people don’t get 20 years for homicide. I moved to the USA 20 years ago, but now I find Europeans enjoy more freedoms than Americans in several ways. I would like to know your take on the Victorinox Solo (Swiss army 1)
@@stefpix Wow!! That is really interesting (and scary) thanks for sharing - I think the solo is a single blade? I think I would want more than that in a SAK!
@@JonGadget Laws in the USA are a patchwork of bureaucracy. So called "gravity knives" have been illegal in New York State for years, then since they are useful to some workers, they were made legal. But they are still illegal in New York City (where I live). A woman from Texas or some other state was visiting the 9-11 memorial in NYC and going through security she declared the gun she was carrying. It is illegal in NYC to carry/transport guns and she was arrested. It means that in the USA what is legal ins one town is illegal a few miles away. Americans do not like centralized laws, and on the other hand it creates a patchwork of contradictory bureaucracy. But it is the most free country in the whole universe, so they say.
You can own a locking knife but you can't carry it in a public place without very good reason. So, they're fine at home or your own land. The reason for the ban was knee-jerk legislation from politicians due to rising street knife-crime, which continued to rise anyway
Originally, the law was going to ban *all* knives in public places until someone pointed out that would potentially criminalise the large number of people who own Swiss army knives. So, an exemption was written in for non-locking knives less than 3 inches long
It is a bit ridiculous. I read somewhere that the law wasn't initially meant to criminalise lock knives, only fixed blades and "offensive weapons" (switchblades, balisongs, non-ornamental swords, every niche weapon ever used in a ninja movie etc.) but a judge ruled in a court case that a lock knife doesn't count as a folding knife and here we are. I'm not a police officer and I've never been in a street gang so I don't know personally but I'd imagine the vast majority of stabbings are done with cheap kitchen knives and garden tools and maybe the odd cheap imported lockknife or switchblade here and there maybe. I'd be very surprised if anyone's ever killed someone with a Leatherman Wave or a Benchmade 940 in this country.
yes - just to echo the other feedback - I believe fixed blades were made illegal to carry and a barrister argued that a locking knife is the same thing 🙁
I have this one, and also the S110v version, in my opinion, the S110v knife is much better, ! It is a lot lighter, and the action feels very superior, to this Heinnie version,.. The S110v knife is the one I grab, most days, and the S30v knife stays in the drawer,,. If anyone is thinking of buying this, I'd say, pay a bit more, and get the S110v version,, it's not difficult to sharpen imho, and holds a very sharp edge, for a really long time..
I find it quite bizzare that a safety feature such as a locking blade is not legal to carry. Again, such a knife can be carried if one can prove " good reason ". Who decides what constitutes good reason ? Anyway I always carry my Skeletool in my bag for emergencies. If it is confiscated I"ll just buy another one.
I would not feel comfortable carrying that in the UK. Regardless of its legality, it looks like it’s purpose is nothing other than an offensive weapon.
