Fun fact : Spyro was originally going to be green. But because of the fact that the grass was green the developers instead changed him to purple to not confuse people with telling the grass and Spyro apart.

Square Eyed Jak that's strange... Does it do this on everything? Like on any PlayStation? It might also be a bad laser in the cd/DVD/bluray drive

Square Eyed Jak that's really strange. The only thing I can think that could have done that would be a manufacturing error. In which case your game has that as value, but I'm sure you would like it better if you could hear the music.

Have you tried cleaning it? I actually had two Sega Dreamcast games, "Airforce Delta" which crashed every time I started a mission and "Dead or Alive 2" which keep freezing on Kasumi's Stage 5 match in Story Mode. My Dad mentioned about using Metal Cleaner (the brand I used was: "Autosol Metal Polish"). So we applied and rubbed a little bit on the surfaces which actually fixed the issues. No freezing issues. Really glad "Airforce Delta" works as the US version is not very common.

Yea that music stuttering is a scratched disc I believe. My Spyro 1 is fine but my Spyro 2 skips sometimes.

All I can say is that I can vouch for JoshKall Plays. My Spyro 1 disc always skips on certain level soundtracks such as Terrace Village and Haunted Towers :/

Fair analysis of this game from an objective view, of course I love this game and the charm it has. It's a shame about the music for your game, I've never experienced that myself. Good review nonetheless and I'm interested to see your views on the sequels.

Square Eyed Jak Not yet, about to watch it now, I only ever played 1 and 3 during my childhood so it'll be interesting seeing your take one it. Spyro 3 was always my favorite, looking forward to seeing your review on that. I just spam watched all your Crash Bandicoot reviews yesterday and today, very amusing.

Square Eyed Jak The early ones were a little rough but the production quality and editing really increased especially around Crash 2 and 3. What I like about your reviews is how blunt and straight forward you are and don't rely on those LULZ IM SO RANDOM LOOK AT MY CRAZY YELLOW TEXT AND AWKWARD HUMOUR XD. Very refreshing to see. One of the most memorable jokes was the "what does this music make you think of? Mexico?" I laughed out loud at that one, and I pissed myself at the "They stole a dragon egg and a jet engine" hahahah So true, hated those cunts growing up.

"the fools you see in this world are invincible, but that does not mean they shouldn't be attacked" What the dragon is referring to is the fools (the elf looking dudes) in the Dream Weavers world that don't die when attacked but change platforms on a timer! :)

Lower poly versions of the environment that get higher poly the closer you get to them is called mip mapping which was used in a lot of n64 games.

Tbh I have only started playing these games. I didn't grow up with Spyro or Jak And Daxter or what ever Mario or sonic shit! I grew up with Ratchet And Clank series. Nuff fucken said those games are 11/10!

I actually have this really whack Spyro 3 disc that has sound problems all over the place it's very funny to listen to at times. Most characters have taken helium in there. EleGiggle

The music problem happens because of the copy. I know this because the first time I played it that issue wasn't there. However, when I re-play it, which was 5 years later, that issue was there.

I first played this on PS3 on some Spyro Trilogy in the PS Store, I had a bit of nostalgia of Spyro 3 while playing since they're rather similar. I only played Spyro 3 on PS1 as a kid and was my first Spyro game. Too bad Spyro's in Skylanders now.

I can see where you are coming from, after it is complete you do say like, that was fun, but it doesn't really stick like that. The big thing about it though, for quite a number of people who disagree, it will be the nostalgia talking, I grew up with it myself, so I will be biased to say the game was, and is still great fun, granted I do see your point and have to agree as well.

The music not working properly is by far not just your copy, Jak. Several of my friends and myself have the exact same problem. And we ain't happy 'bout it. What I am happy about is your review though. Nice and fair, with great argumentation and valid points.

If people say shit like "the n64 can render entire environments without fogging or low res polygons", yeah, it could do that, but either A. it ran like shit or b. the graphics were really compromised in the first place, making it look ugly like Mario 64

the music glitch is due to disk scratches I think. I remember it happening to me when I was young.

I refuse to accept the fact that some of the crash games have far more things wrong yet they have the same rating as Spyro The Dragon I know they are completely different. But I guess it is not on really anyone taste

I played it for the first time this year. Honestly was not impressed. The last boss was a total pain in the ass as well. It was basically just chasing two thieves and then chasing Gnasty Gnork. Awesome. I played through the entire game for the last encounter to suck more dick than any boss I've played against.

I adore the original Spyro games for the PS1. It's strange I grew up playing Crash and Spyro, and yet I've always preferred Spyro over Crash. Guess it just comes down to personal preference.

I played a copy of Spyro 1 that had the same audio glitch. and that's on NTSC so it's probably not PAL version. I always figured it was the disc, but it was weird that the game played perfectly except for the audio

To say that most dragons only say thank you is a great exaggeration and the dragon who says "The fools in this world are invincible." is referring to the fools you find right next to him and elsewhere in this world that when attacked start a timer that changes the environment for you to reach new places. Your review seems in some places a bit unfair.

Hey Jak, remember when I told you about making a Crash Bandicoot fan game? I have thought of another great idea :D, wanted your opinion on it. What do you think of a Crash game, where you have to go against Mario and Sonic, with Spyro helping Crash, Luigi helping Mario and Tails helping Sonic.

My favorite game out of the whole franchise is Spyro: The year of the Dragon. Mainly because nostalgia. I tried playing the other two games and I just could not get too into the games. If the game I played the most was Spyro 2 then i'd like that game more than any other... Tbh about N64 games... It does give a lower polygon count the farther away an object or character is. Try this... Walk away from your camera in Mario64. Mario will look literally like a pile of blocks from a distance. ;) I laughed when I first saw this. Great review Square Eye Jack. Very funny and well put together.

Great game, though its super easy. Once you figure out how to get everything, you beat it each time after. Too bad about your copy because the music is probably the best of the trilogy.

i didnt encounter the Music issue on the NTSC version, it probably a Problem to make the game run at 50hrtz, or your disk is Scratched....almost.

I agree with your opinions on the game. It's a good review. This always been my least favourite entry of the series. However, that's probably because I've played Spyro: Year of the Dragon. Before, I played this game as a kid. lol. Out of the series, its the most forgettable to be honest.

Dr. Shemp was probs the only sorta challenging (I definitely took slightly more damage from him than the others), straight-up boss battle in this game. And he's pretty much a tweaked Papu Papu. Sequels definitely up the ante in dat department. That and they give you the hover ability, something I kept trying to use here during my last playthrough but forgot wasn't in this game so I kept plummeting into oblivion lol
