Your kit can sound super tuned up too. Trust your ears and use quality heads appropriate for the kind of music you play. You don't need top of the line shells to get the good tones. Let the heads breathe and don't choke them off. Cheers.
A lot of drummers are known for a certain snare sound. Which Gavin definitely has. But for me his toms are also part of his signature sound. Perfection... Always.
GFC_CABRERO Him and Dave Weckl are my favs. Got a signed drumhead from Gavin from a show in Dallas years ago. One of my prized possessions. You should see the hit radius on it. Perfectly centered. Dude is a machine.
I spent 20 years playing drums before I was able to get my then dream kit of Gretsch Drums. I'm still playing Gretsch after 50 years of playing today. But, my late friend Kim Plainfield used to tell me alot that I should get Sonor Drums for my playing. Now I hear these SDQ2's and I'm like...Man, Kim was Right! One day I'll own Sonor.
You can hear through the years the progression of his drum recordings. Started out very focused and dry, like in the Rhythmic Horizons videos. Switched to using condensers on the toms and sounds like he upped in the mix the reverb mics in that big hall room in front of him. I hear the whole set now as more of a singular instrument rather than a collection of beautifully tuned drums and cymbals, as much as I loved the dry sound too.
This is definitely true lol, however I do find that I play better on my Sonor drums compare to other kits. Something about the way they feel and respond affects my playing in a good way.
Hehe If you have the drumkit of your dreams, so in a sense it will make you play better ;P. I am considering buying an SQ2 costum. Does anyone have advice about choosing shell thickness and wood (birch or beech)?
@@thesneakygamer4343 yup they are incredible drums that cut through and punch in the face when you need it. And you get that sound that is so awesome feeling when played you feel professional. Just my opinion. Best cans for the money
Hi! xD, I think that this combination of gavin and sonor is amazing, I think it is the perfect drummer for sonor, because of how it is able to get those unique sounds of sonor and gavin so clean, unbeatable!
I could listen to this guy all day. He is so musical. Even his simplest single stokes on the dotted eight notes up and down on his toms, I mean, this is something literally anyone who understands rhythmic division could do accurately, even if they have never played drums in their lives, but somehow he does them, and its SO in the pocket! It doesn't hurt that those drums sound so amazing, responsive and well tuned, of course - but he'd probably be just as amazing on some upturned empty buckets and trashcan lids.
Gavin Harrison gives me a purpose to practice during this corna virus lock down. Thank you for being alive Mr. Harrison! I have seen I believe more drummers than anybody on You tube and playing live in my 57 years of existence. Gavin Harrison is amazing to watch and just genius ! I get the same feeling when I watch any buddy Rich videos even if I dislike the Buddy Rich music, Buddy is also absolutely fantastic to watch ! I believe that is a good pool to be in Buddy and Gavin pool ..:)
Yes! I've never had a bigger smile on my face :D Thank you so much for uploading this. We want more of Gavin Harrison! Best drummer and drum manufacturing company in the world! 🔥That kit looks and sounds gorgeous! :D
Technique notwithstanding, his sense of phrasing is shockingly good. He plays out an idea, and it literally shocks you. In a count of 4 you get the start, the heart and conclusion of a thought, which seamlessly and musically ties in with the next. It all just flows, like water. It’s no wonder that he ended up with King Crimson. Jack DeJohnette is like that; I always said his drumming sounds like the ocean. And lastly, Gavin does all this eloquent and powerful stuff with BIG drumsticks; I own a pair and they are serious wood.
@ 0:48 was a friggin epic groove to go into after the intro! Love it! So glad I found Sonor drums! Love my SQ2 Birch kit black to silver fade with nickel hardware on top and chrome hardware on bottom. Sonor is the best!
Very tasteful grooves. Played with a level of professionalism so that the subtleties of tones can be heard, the ghost notes the splashes, the fills. Many drummers don’t realize the higher the volume level of playing the more the tone and dynamics are lost. When the music 🎶 calls for it yes your volume and playing will- should be matched to the mix. But a solo in the studio I think should showcase a drummers musicality 👍 well done.
gavin playing an entire birch kit is a dream come true for me. i had a big set of ultramarine birch SQ2 and i really regret selling them. i will have another set.
