I am a nurse and I'm thinking about branching out into the healthcare informatics world. This was the first video I've ever watched on anything coding or programming related and I followed everything well. Thanks!
@Jess-mw7ez
@Jess-mw7ez 7 лет назад
hey Annie. I'm also trying to get into healthcare informatics or just any IT. I'm an RT. Any updates from your side? Someone told me to start with SQL TSQL but later on somebody else was telling me to get my foot into azure/cloud since SQL TSQL are fading away and already saturated. Now I'm just lost.
@jorgelopez-qj6ke
@jorgelopez-qj6ke 7 лет назад
Jess start with the really established technology, then when you become advanced enough with it, learn the new tech. But don't ditch the "old" technologies, because they are mature and implemented near everywhere.
@Jess-mw7ez
@Jess-mw7ez 7 лет назад
Thanks Jorge. So would you recommend SQL TSQL or is there anything else more basic than that? I want to start with something basic and something that I can get a job right away. Any suggestions?
@jorgelopez-qj6ke
@jorgelopez-qj6ke 7 лет назад
Jess I am no expert on this field (which explains why was I watching the video) but I'd say that TSQL is a bit complicated for starting. Instead, I would go for MySQL/MariaDB (same thing really) or SQL Server by Microsoft. When you get comfortable with that, move on to TSQL or whatever you want. I don't know where you are from or what they use there for medical data though. Then, there are a lot of DB systems, Postgres is really big now, Cassandra, Hadoop, etc for the big-data aspect, Redis for speed, NoSQL databases like MongoDB, also CouchDB which integrates online and offline sync... Endless possibilities.

Amazing. I didn't realize it was an hour already before the tutorial finished. I am just disappointed I didn't find this video earlier. I was given as task to find some data by joining tables which I couldn't at first go, wish I had known about this... You explained JOIN so well. Very soothing voice unlike other tutorials where the voices of the instructor is too loud and irritating. Thank you Brad. This is channel is going to be my first contact for SQL classes. Hope you keep uploading more tutorials.

Brad this has helped me to finally understand the concept behind joins. There is something about you speaking as you type that makes it easier to get than simply reading it in some manual. Thanks.

Before getting to your video, I had a very barebones understanding of SQL. At my job, before our application switched to cloud-based, we were utilizing SQL Server to manage individually for customers (customers would install our application and manage their data associated with that application in their own independent SQL Server Database that we setup). When things would go wonky and required a trip into their SQL, we would go in and fix various things, some of which required running queries and/or scripts. From this I gained a very basic knowledge and as I was more and more exposed to it, I picked up more and more pieces. However I was never learned enough to pick up anymore than some basics because I struggle with syntax, and book learning simply isn't how I learn (because my brain is dumb like that). Your video is the first video that has actually been able to provide leaps and bounds in my understanding, coupled with W3 school courses. I'm certainly no SQL whiz kid, but that bit of light at the end of that tunnel is now visible. Much appreciated!!

After id 3 was deleted, how would we go about re-entering values at ID 3? If we were to go back and add in a value like we did for all of the values at once with INSERT INTO tableName (columnNames) VALUES(......), would that create a new ID, or would that replace the value of 3?

This is a very informative youtube. You speak clearly, slowly, allowing a viewer to digest the information being learned. You keep it simple, which is good for learning or for refresher. In the use of sum (age) = 185, you stated that you didn't know what the sum of age could be used for. In a lot of cases, numeric summations like the example have been used as "hash totals", to ensure that all records were processed; this was a very common practice in the days of flat files and mainframe computer processing. Back in the day, such a "hash total" could have been printed on greenbar paper of the batch job, and used as a control total by batch control analysts, who would confirm that all processing performed in the batch cycle was accurate. This control total was then passed thru feeder applications downstream, which would also calculate the sum, and everything in the batch cycle should have completed with the same summed up age value of 185. Thanks for your time in developing this video. Recommended subscription.
