Math teacher here. FIrst off this is a useless skill since it only works with perfect squares. The problem with math students is not that they can do things in a different way. The problem is that learning math isn't about right answers, it's about learning how numbers and concepts inter-relate. Yeah, you gotta show your work, there is no way to verify thinking without seeing or hearing it. I can't hear you think if you aren't explaining to me. I've got to see it on paper. Answers are completely useless in this regard.
@homelackin2234
@homelackin2234 5 лет назад
@@hastypete2 I get that, but 1. If it's not multiple choice and I get the correct answer, I shouldnt waste time showing work, especially if it's a timed test. 2. If I am showing work and skip a step because it was too simple and I did it in my head, shouldnt get points deducted or the answer wrong.

A quick way of finding the two matching digits in the squares of 1-9 is to only check the squares of 1-5. The other "matching" number will always be the one that when added to the first matching number, will add to 10. Example: if I had the number 1746, I would know that my last digit could be either 4 (4x4 = 1 *6* ), or 6 (6 + *4* = 10)

@@hastypete2 that's stupid. If someone is copying or using photo math for their homework, their tests will reflect. Some people are just good at math. I am able to do several steps in my head, so I can focus more on finding the solution to the problem. I've found that taking extra time and writing every step is unnecessary, and often results in me making a tiny mistake that costs me the entire problem. Have some faith in your students, and understand that not every person is the same. Students aren't robots.
@RodelIturalde
@RodelIturalde 5 лет назад
@@axlereno6215 It doesn't matter how good you think you are at doing steps in your head. You will still only be able to solve simple questions in your head. As soon as you get to a question which requires more thought, you are forced to write to actually get it right and understand what you do. I did a rather easy test with a class in maths. Question: 10 trees of width 30 cm on a row, 1m between each tree. How far from the centre of the first tree to centre of the last tree. Surprise surprise, the students who used this in their head was wrong in about 80% of the cases. The students that where forced to write down their solution was correct in 99% of the cases. Ps: if you answer anything except 11.7m you are wrong.

Just for your own knowledge, I'm at the University in Belgium, and that's not right when you said at the beginning that a square root have to be specified as positive and negative, a square root is always positive, for a simple exemple, take the square root fonction (f(x) = sqrt x) and you will see that the answer is always positive, the trick is that : -when you say "wich number squared is equal to something", the answer is positive AND negative -but when you say "what is the square root of something", the answer MUST BE positive The difference is very low, but is there, and can't be unknown, but regardless of that very little and common mistake, the video is really great 👌 (sorry if my English is bad or if you had understood my com like angry or bad written, it's because I speak French, and don't really have the habits to speak English 😉

actually no, any negative number * any negative number = a positive number, for example 24*24 = 576, so sqrt(576) = 24 but -24 * -24 also equals 576 so sqrt(576) can equal -24 or +24 but its a habit to always pick the positive number instead

I’m 75, I went to parochial school for 12 years. I felt I received a better than average education. In high school, math was difficult for me. I could do much of it in my head, but I had a rough time with equations. Some teachers…..nuns…..couldn’t teach for anything. Basically robots. I have a dear friend who was a nun for 20 years, she taught history and math. She only had a high school education. While that in itself isn’t bad, I wonder if she was really qualified to teach? She said many of the younger nuns didn’t have degrees. Some were highly educated, but didn’t have a clue how to teach. I did eventually end up with a math degree in my twenties but it wasn’t because of how I was taught in high school. These videos are amazing, I wish we had them when I was in school.

+Jordan Pool burningmath.blogspot.in/2013/09/how-to-check-if-number-is-perfect-square.html This teaches you how....its very easy! even easier than this!
@onlydata
@onlydata 8 лет назад
+EKOOing Gaming Gave up on that one. This was easy, how-to-check-if-number-is-perfect-square was not easy at all. It's easy to rule out a lot of numbers by knowing that: A perfect square always ends on 1, 4 or 9 and has an equal ten. Or it ends on 6 and has an odd ten. Or it ends on 25. Also no number can be a perfect square unless its digital root is 1, 4, 7, or 9. Still 925 is not a perfect square but we wont know without a calculator or more complex testing. To be sure if you have a perfect square add these rules: If a number is divisible by 4, its square leaves a remainder 0 when divided by 8. Square of even number not divisible by 4 leaves remainder 4 while square of an odd number always leaves remainder 1 when divided by 8. Total numbers of prime factors of a perfect square are always odd.

This is a perfect example of a math trick versus math knowledge. What I like about this is that it generates interest in square roots! I think this could be push farther by thinking about extention questions like "What if we did not have a perfect square? What would happen?" We can see that if our number ended in a digit other than 1,4,5,6, or 9 then we would not have a perfect square. This is because when we multiply multi-digit numbers we start in the ones place which for perfect squares has to be the same number. This is also why we only need to know the squares for 1-9.

You can leave your answer without finding the square root, for instance, if you left your answer like √567 you would still get the mark however if the answer was √25 you would miss a mark because you can easily find the square root of that number. However, I don't know if this goes the same for you since you're a stranger on the internet...anways good luck on your exam.

I am 36 now...i was awful at math in school and I didnt understand why. It made absolutely no sense to me these formulas. They used to make my head spin and i was SOOO lost that I was afraid of asking questions . even if I did ask questions...the teachers could never help me understand so I ended up shutting up and failing all my math classes. I gave up. But now...with youtube and Google...i realized math is incredibly beautiful and filled with patterns and proofs. I now understand WHY the hypotenuse is equal to the squares of the two sides. Thanks to you I understand how to find the square root in a way that makes sense. All the pieces are finally coming together. I am obsessed with mathematics now...and patterns. I am glad this generation has youtube and Google in a way. If they use it to understand it will greatly help.
