If you need to square up a block that's larger than your ruler (15" example), you can use freezer paper as a fill-in for the desired size. Here's how: cut off a chunk of freezer paper and fold it in half. Cut the paper at half the width/length needed (8-1/2" for a 16" square). Center up the block under the freezer paper (with the wax side facing down. Press the freezer paper down with your iron. The melted wax will hold on to your appliqué piece. Now line up your ruler with the edge of the freezer paper and trim off to the desired size. Peel off the freezer paper and your block is at the correct finished size.

Excellent tip!! You just saved me a nice chunk of change. I really didn't want to buy a ruler for some blocks I need to square to 16.5. Instead, I folded the blocks like you folded the freezer paper, ironed the folded sides so they were nice and flat, then trimmed each block to 8.25 on each side using a square ruler I already have. It worked perfectly. Thanks again!

I've done a quilt w 12 inch blocks, reversible. Has spirograph embroidery patterns on front and back. I've not had a big enough ruler for a long time so this quilt got pushed back in a draw. I'm doing quilt as you go style blocks since it's reversible, colored bobbin thread allowed this. With this idea I can now finish this quilt. Thank you for this amazing tip. I will use this many many times!

Question why would you not use the back of the fabric, does it not leave residue?
@QuiltingWithNancy

Hi Maggie - it doesn't leave any residue - you could iron it to the back of you wanted to.

@QuiltingWithNancy
@QuiltingWithNancy 2 года назад
Yes of course! You can tape pieces of freezer paper together using the blue painters tape so it can be ironed on.

Just watched this great video and will definitely use the freezer paper method to square. Question: how do you suggest squaring up blocks that have a LOT of HST and hour glasses at the edge to be butted up to the same HST and hour glasses in the adjoining block? So far it’s been a nightmare, especially the hour glasses!
@QuiltingWithNancy
@QuiltingWithNancy 3 года назад
Hi Brenda, I actually tackle lots of HST during the Sunset Over Dublin series - that is the latest series on my channel - check them out :)

Is it okay to cut the freezer paper with a rotary cutter? Won't that make it dull?

All paper will dull the blades.

How many times can you use the freezer paper?
@QuiltingWithNancy

Generally the paper can be ironed on to fabric 8-10 times

So clever!! Well-presented, too! I was curious, does it leave any of the waxy "stuff" on the blocks? Thanks a ton.
@QuiltingWithNancy
@QuiltingWithNancy 6 лет назад
Hi - thank you so much for liking our videos :) - I always need encouragement!! No, using freezer paper doesn't leave any waxy at all - I think I have been using freezer paper for 20 years for one technique or another - can't live without it!!

How do you know that you are laying the freezer paper down on the fabric exactly where it needs to be?? I've never made a block larger than 12" Thanks!
@QuiltingWithNancy
@QuiltingWithNancy 7 лет назад
If you crease the paper so that you have center and diagonal registration marks you can center your design. And when you are putting the freezer paper down you can see through it just enough to know where you are putting it.Thanks for watching!!
