Squarp Pyramid - First Jam, ft. VolcaFM, Minilogue, JU-06, TR-8

Just picked up the amazing and seemingly limitless #SquarpPyramid hardware sequencer, and I've spent the day only scratching the surface of what this incredible machine has to offer. Here's a quick jam I put together with the little I've learned so far. Roland TR-8 starts us off with a beat, then I use the Pyramid pads to play a line on the Volca FM, before switching over to Minilogue and eventually getting a little JU-06 before I can't figure out what to do next. I am still working through a lot of the complexities of the unit but I was too excited not to do a little jam. Let me know if you have any questions about the PYRAMID!

I'll be interested to learn how to get songs going, you know, patterns in order A B A C D B A C.. being able to record them live and then sequence would be the dream, bug I think it'll take a long time for me to get there.

I’m trying to learn the pyramid.. Is everything connected and set up like midi channels on designated tracks? And then you activate them when you want to write.. I’m so lost on the flow.

I have a question. For this small setup, how did you make the MIDI connections and did you set the Pyramid to multi-track?

Are the synths being controlled by midi events from the Squarp or their own sequencers? e.g. the Minilogue. This thing looks really cool but I'm not sure if I can abandon the ES2 for it. If I had to choose between the two I might go with the Squarp though. That thing is sexy.

John Doe in this video it is ALL Squarp Pyramid- the sequencer on the Minilogue is great but incomparable to the Squarp (especially for cc capture and modulation). I bought an ES2 intended to use as a sequencer and I just couldn't gel with it. With the Squarp, its hook up synths, play synths, synths play back. I love it and am just getting started!

Nice. The Squarp's 2 MIDI outs are a simple but brilliant addition as is the CV/gate jacks. One problem of Korg's device is including Volca sync (and making Volca sync a thing) and the littlebits jack. Completely useless. However, I'm too accustomed to the sampling/fx/motion control modulation/synths of the ES2. It ain't great but I use it. If the Squarp had sampling I would go for it immediately though. Sending MIDI out to an external Sampler and/or drum machine might be a step backwards for me. It would be perfect for an analog drum machine though.

I have both a Pyramid and an Electribe 2S and I can tell you I completely stopped using the Electribe internal sequencer for anything. I can control every single aspect of the Electribe's synth and sample voice, with better control, and things like a proper arpergiator and probabilities.

Which synth voice can we hear (for the first 30 seconds), before you start playing on the Minilogue keys? Is that the Volca FM ... ? Dig your vids, by the way!! :)

What was the learning curve with the Pyramid like for you? I just got one and haven't had time to sit down with it but I'm kinda wondering if I may have bitten off more than I can chew.

Can I use my nord lead a1 on more than 1 track for example 8 tracks on pyramid of different nord sounds from one keyboard to make song

im not too familiar with the lead a1 but if you can split the timbres by midi channel then you can play it that way from the pyramid. I think the A1 is 4 part multi-timbral... if it is, then up to 4 tracks.

It is the most important part of my whole set-up! I rely on it so so much for all the music that I make now, it's become indespensible and I'm still learning new things about it and how to use it better each time I get to spend time with it. Still comes with my highest recommendation! Thanks for listening

Maybe the Engine by Social Entropy. It's pretty damn good with no menu diving, it's really stripped back and simple to use. Costs a good bit less as well.

I'm really interested in getting a Squarp, trying to learn more about it. So, when you make that Minilogue loop, are you just recording the midi then sending it back to the Minilogue? How do you have all the midi cables routed? Thanks!

That's exactly the idea! Right now I'm still working through properly configured the Squarp for a "play/playback" type set-up, but when you see me play the minilogue everything including notes and parameter changes are recorded by the Squarp.... I will eventually have it set up so it records and plays all of my synths as i play them, notes, knobs and all thanks for checking it out!!

For sure that's something I am going to do! It took me a few hours to really understand what I was doing even making a pretty basic sequence like the one in the video here, what I really bought the squarp for was for live song building like I'm starting to get a grasp on here..... soon I hope to have it sequencing my fingerdrumming into the TR8, and recording all of the performances from my synths, but I'm running into some trouble with infinite MIDI loops right now. I think I've got it solved, but I plan to have make a more complete 'guide' video when I know the thing I little better so I'm not just stumbling around it!

so far so good! before I updated to the newest operating system a few of my synths (Roland Boutiques specifically) would resend all the information to the sequencer and the sequencer would resend to the synths making for an infinite ammount of note re-triggers and cc automation HELL and would crash the synths. The update fixed this and I;m reallly excited to try it the way I originally concieved how it would work with my set up now that im through this. hopefully Ill have a new vid this weekend. Crazy busy at work, but super super excited to be making more music with Pyramid
