The laws are terrible in New York I agree. However, they’re like that all over the country. Squatters have more rights than property owners, and it needs to change federally. Unbelievable to me that common criminals have a right to trespass and it cost property owners thousands of dollars to try to get them removed.

@@herbbot8241 Right. I get that part.. but your words are key.. “fake”. If I am pulled over in a stolen car and I produce a fake registration… I’m on my way to legal proceedings. Again.. I’m not be argumentative.. I just am seriously baffled by this entire theory of squatting. Even if it is determined that a person was legitimately tricked into a fake rental agreement, how is that now the responsibility of the owner of the property? I just don’t get it at all. Sorry for being so clueless.

They go to the utility company and get the power turned on in their name. They then have paperwork with their name at that address. That will work at making the police go away.

It's an old American and European law. More than a century ago, if a NY farmer abandoned his/her property to go west, or an Irish farmer dropped everything and moved to America, then a squatter can tend the abandoned property and eventually claim it. Today's "squatters" are thieves that take advantage of an out of date law. They try to steal empty houses that are for sale.

It’s pathetic that it’s actually our government whether state, local or federal that allowed this squatting crime to be acceptable and actually encouraged. It’s only after too many of these horrible incidents are getting a lot of news media coverage that anything was actually done. If you do some research, you will find the actual homeowners were being arrested for trying to remove these criminals. People have lost their properties to these criminals. It should not be this difficult to get criminals (squatters) out of your home unless the government protects them with laws that are to ridiculous to even believe.

I will never understand how the legal system says it's a civil matter to remove people who break into your home and present forged documents is not a criminal action. I will never understand how or why the government, state, and county work when the policy they put in place does more harm than good. A 7-year-old kid can tell you this doesn't make sense.

Oh so we need to get a house sitter when we go to the grocery store and run errands now. No I don't think so. State needs to make the law protect homeowners and their property, not create undue burdens on them because of criminals needs. This means a 911 call should be enough to extract trespassers immediately, without delay. The name on the deed and property records should be enough to do this.

Happened to a guy I know. Twice. First time took well over a year to get the squatters gone. Next time some “friends” of his (he’s a motorcycle mechanic) rolled up and told the squatters in no uncertain terms to be gone when they got back in 5 minutes. They were gone.

1:20 I do the same thing when I post my house for rent. I will post it online to the normal sights but not include the address. And I drive by to check the house twice a day. Sadly, the legal system works for the ones who want everything for free. I grew up extremely poor during the Ragan era where all we had to eat at times was powered pea soup and cheese. It was tough. So now that I'm in a position to own property to have someone set up shop in my house it will take me two years to get them out while all that time paying the mortgage to the bank. It's hard to comprehend the helplessness one will feel.

While Florida and NY law updates were a good start, I don't think it goes far enough. The time it takes for Police/Sheriff to arrive and kick out the squatter that can't provide proof of residency should not take anything longer than a normal wellness check. Squatters, while in jail/prison should also be forced to pay at least 2 times the cost to fix the damages. If you don't like it, don't squat.

There's no spare money in the economy, and once a person is evicted it's almost impossible for them to come back. Some of the homeless where I live now look more like the working poor. If a 1929 style crash comes up, this will become the norm for middle class, working poor and the original homeless. Heck it might even be your neighbours.

Amazing ! I have squatters in a long Island home! I am very happy that this homeowner got this criminals out! But what he is saying about law is not true. And there is something very wrong with this video. I do not think it is a squatter situation at all. And my last posting was taken down about supposed homeowner speaking about law. Who ever he is he is very wrong about law! All these cops at a squatter situation and removal not likely???
