With the passing of California Assembly Bill 2022, dozens of small towns across California are now grappling with how to move forward with what to call their town. Including Fresno County's Squaw Valley.
Katherine Phillips I believe the most Important person that should of been heard in this report was the Lady of the squaw valley tribe Now she had something to say and we the People of Squaw Valley stand behind her! I Don't want our towns name to be changed !!! In fact I sat there and neither Nathan or Raintree would call on me and I'm a strong Seneca Women a Squaw but i wasn't there to be disrespecting to anyone I just got up and left. I will fight to the dear end for what i believe is right I love this mountain and people and so proud to see SQAUW VALLEY come together. And this is my thought on it all.
Its a sexual and racial slur the cowboy men used to call the women up their after the fact theyd only go up their to rape the women . Look up “squaw meaning” on google
A person would think it to be a honor for a place that is so absolutely beautiful to be named with the definition of a woman of their culture... Squaw is a native American term... What am I missing ?
@@Jason21012 Not necessarily... . Even if you are correct, I never had any I'll intent while using the word and I'm sure I'm not the only person that feels that way... People really need to quit crying and being so sensitive about what comes out if the mouths of others..Western movies will always use the term as will the word kraut in war movies...
@@daviddutra3079 Even if YOU never had ill intent, it’s still a word historically used to insult people based on their race/gender. This isn’t a movie. These are real places named with a real word that had a negative impact on the native community. Kraut isn’t even used anymore for anything.
That is CRAP! Keep the name. This is disgusting . It’s a money scream. Then you’ll have to change everything on a map. Barrie Ontario tried to change Inisfills name. To Barrie, It never took.
Would they fight to keep the name if it targeted them? like, "Dumb*ss Valley" or "Inbred Valley" or "Small P*nis Valley." Nope, that would change on day 2.
That's an Awful thing to say about. Indigenous Americans, however in Central California. We believe in Free Speech & Free Expression. Not like the Cultural Marxist Coast.
