Chris Difford croaking an octave below Glenn Tilbrook is what made Squeeze Squeeze -- that and all the great melodies and lyrics and musicianship and...
OMG. I was there for that concert visiting from SUNY-B. The frisbees were flying all over the place. Flock of Seaguls and a reggae band also performed.
Glenn's music is beguiling. You think that they're simple little 3 chord pop songs until you try and play them yourself and you're left scratching your head mumbling: "WTF" to yourself.
Squeeze was a band who in hindsight never got their full due. Many great songs, with a substantial lead singer which should have been promoted as more AM/FM radio friendly in North America back-in-the-day. This band is worthy of a box-set and an opening gig on the next U2 tour at the very least.
They were on the verge of greatness and commercial success in the early 80's...and then things kind of quickly fell apart. They still wrote and recorded a lot of great material after this, but their shot at the big time was lost (except for the anomaly of "Hourglass" in the U.S.).
Carrack is really good but miss Jools here! His presence (with the cigar, suit and shades) always added something special to Squeeze in my opinion, plus his brilliant keyboard skills!
That was from a short lived TV show called Houba Houba, Antoine de Caunes presented it long before Rapido. He introduced a lot of great english bands to the french audience, you can tell !
I remember watching this concert back in 82 on TV. One of my favorite. Squeeze composed songs that could have been written by the Beatles if they would have carried on said Antoine de Caunes when he presented the concert
