All the deaths were foreshadowed in episode 2. Ali wrongfully stole money from his boss similar to sang woo stealing from marbles from him. Pickpocket girl threatened a guy with a knife to his throat and her throat is slit. Gangster guy jumped off a bridge to get away from people he wronged. He is thrown off a bridge by the girl he wronged. Sang woo was going to kill himself in a suit wet in a bathtub. He kills himself wet in a suit here.

Also seong gi-hun says on episode 2 he was tied up and she asked kang sae byeok to untie him but she hesitates because she knows that he will attack her because she stole his money. But instead she ask him how would she know he will not attack him and he say he swear it on his own mother. But one she untie his arm he tried to attack her so it means he broke of his promise.

I think, Steven, you kind of missed the point, that this weak reveal "all just for fun" is such a strong subversion of a high expectation. It's to feel with Gi-Hun. He was hoping for at least a big meaning behind all his loss. A greater sense! But no... it was just some old bored rich people having fun. How frustrating is that. I love that there isn't more. Why should she have to work if he had that much money? She worked so hard supporting him, and he only thinks about a way to have her work more. It’s also like he forgot she was sick. @@greywater3186 from the show you get the impression that he was once a responsible person. The strike, him seeing a coworker die, and losing his job seemed to have broken him. He turned to gambling and lost everything. Everyone in the Games was a degenerate in some way, except for Ali. You wouldn’t have gotten into that much debt otherwise. It’s pretty obvious he goes back to the games because of her health. He saw her foot, heard the doctor, and knew it would require a lot of money to get her well. But he didn’t tell anyone that and instead put on a cheery demeanor in the games. So he says he wants her to have her own shop, rather than she’s dying from diabetes and needs money for surgery. As far as him not getting on the plane…well, the show needs a Season 2.

If number 1 didn't put Ganbu on the card, Gi Hun would not have gone. He pretty much checked out after his mom died and wasn't touching the money he won. In a way, number 1 really cared about Gi Hun and wanted him to get on with his life and not feel guilty for winning. He's a sick bastard but his friendship he developed with Gi Hun during the game was real. To number 1, they really became ganbu. Again, number 1 is evil but if not for him, Gi Hun wouldn't have snapped out of his depression to go help Sang Woo's mom, Sae-byeok's brother and even visit his own daughter.

@@FullMetalB I liked the card reveal but a way they could have done it that would satisfy both camps could be: Gi Hun gets the card. The camera only shows the "meet me at 7th floor at 11:30" part of the card. Then close up of Gi Hun's face as he reacts in horror to the last part of the card which we don't see. Then everything plays out as it did and when they reveal Number 1, quick flashback to the card to read "from your Ganbu".

@@FullMetalB 1)As I stated I liked the initial reveal. But again the way they did it isn't the only way it could be done. Unlike you, I can see both sides. 2) It is not as you put it incredibly nonsensical. Incredibly nonsensical would be his daughter being the mastermind of Squid game. Nothing changes except the audience seeing Il Nam before seeing Ganbu on the card. We knew Gi Hun gave up on life and wasn't going to go anywhere unless it was something so shocking to motivate him to go. Not only would the audience wonder what was on the card that would motivate him to go to the building but it delays the Il Nam reveal for those who wanted the reveal to happen on the 7th floor. The flashback to the Ganbu on the card would then reveal to the audience why he went to the 7th floor in the first place. Again cause you liked something doesn't mean that anyone who disagrees with you is incredibly nonsensical. I liked the intial reveal and apparently you loved it. But just because you loved it doesn't make other options incredibly nonsensical.

I think a lot of people hate the fact that Gi-hun turns away from the plane and away from his chance to reunite with his daughter. It is very in character of him to sacrifice moments with his family for the sake of other people. In the scene with his ex-wife she yells at him that she had to drive herself to the hospital when she was giving birth and he reminds her that he held a dying man in his arms. In the scene with Il-nam at the barricade he mentions it, and we even see him hallucinating what happened that same day. Every action that Gi-hun has made has been out of spite or towards something. I dearly love his character and I do stand by his decision to stay behind. If they know, simply by his phone call that he’s about to go on a plane and see his daughter, what else do they know? Would it be worth it to put his family at risk? I just think that his character overall is fascinating in the way that the writer wrote him out to be and I applaud him for it.
@edo27

I agree. And i think people forget how significant that last 'game' was involving will the homeless man be saved. That final 'game' is basically a catalyst for his future decision making such as when he couldnt just turn a blind eye to the new season of games being played. He is deciding to help, not turn a blind eye. Yes he could have still seen his daughter first, which a lot of people feel would make realistic sense and I agree, but this is a drama lol. I am Korean, and I enjoyed watching this with you two, even with the dubbing. I'd watched it in Korean, so this was my first time experiencing the dubbing. It was interesting. While I did feel some of the dubbing, especially in the first few episodes, was a bit awkward, I got used to it and felt they did a decent job. Sure, some deeper meanings were lost in translation - but that is the nature of language barriers. When subtitling, it's not feasible to pack in all the meanings and cultural references in the midst of a high speed movie - sometimes, you have to take some shortcuts to maintain the proper flow and keep viewers engaged, but not overwhelmed. I'm sorry that your enjoyment for this show was diminished by those people who feel the need to gatekeep. I was totally cool with your reason for watching it dubbed - it was not my personal choice, but so long as you were enjoying it, I didn't particularly care WHAT method you had to take to do so - the point is that you did. It's no one's business but your own as to why you had to resort to dubbing - anyone who tried to shame you for it should, themselves, BE ashamed. I appreciate you two for your reactions, and I truly appreciate you two for sticking with them, despite the negativity and hostility of the more immature, self-absorbed, and entitled commenters.

I understand Steven's point about blunted shock value in the final reveals but I think that's intentional. The writer wasn't going for shock but for tension from the reading of the card, to arriving at the building, going up the elevator, walking across a darkened 7th floor to spotlighted bed by a window, to the slow push in of the camera to reveal a completely bald elderly man in bed, who turns to face the camera and remove his oxygen mask to confirm the dreaded truth that the old man who was a fan favorite since episode one beloved by viewers and reactors, mourned by viewers and reactors, he was not dead, but more, was the host of all the atrocities. Even the reveal about his mom could've been a shock but was foreshadowed creating tension as the encounter with Sang-woo's mom dragged on, you had the tension of her worried about her son, Gi-hun knowing the horrible truth and not able to break her heart, meanwhile we're increasingly worried about his mom, especially when he arrives to their darkened home, but it's late at night so maybe she's merely asleep, or maybe she's left for the hospital again like before, until the final horrible truth, the awful truth we dreaded is revealed. The show puts us through an emotional wringer, joy, tragedy, all out fury and back. Even the ending enraged a lot of viewers with folks yelling, "Nooo! Go see your daughter (first)!"

I am really sorry, once again, for all the verbal assault and gatekeeping you two had to go through re sub vs dub and how that absolutely clouded your viewing experience. Very glad you enjoyed the show overall and I hope you do give foreign content a try still - if not for our viewing enjoyment then on your own. I noticed in episode one (admittedly because a friend heavily hinted at something so I was already tipped off) that the old man does not have a green glow to him in red light, green light and neither do the people in his immediate vicinity. Therefore leading us, the viewer, to conclude that he was in no real danger of being 'eliminated' (whether he himself was aware of this or if that was a Front Man's decision I don't think we get any information about). Still leaves you to wonder about the two games (honeycomb and tug-of-war) after and what the fail safe was there for him not to die. Ice that arm, Steven. Looked like Nikki got you good a few times! I'm all for Nikki and Steve watching the show however they need to. Not everyone CAN watch shows with subs and I very much enjoyed their reactions to the show overall. But G.Diddy's still got a valid point. If Steve were to acknowledge that he maybe felt worse about the episode BECAUSE the dubs couldn't portray the emotions, that's fine. But he's made a point in many of these videos to state "I can still see the great acting" or "I can still feel the emotion" to justify it even though it's clearly been tough. They only seem to feel anything when the STORY calls for it, because it's not reliant on acting and/or speech. In an episode like this, where the story mostly ends after Gi-Hun wins, they're the first people I've seen seem lost about what Gi-Hun is feeling and doing after that 1 year jump -- and I think whether they acknowledge it or not, it's because of the dubs. They were already confused about what was going on with Gi-Hun so when the card reveal was supposed to be the big emotional moment, Steve doesn't see it that way because his mind is ALREADY like "what the hell is going on?" Lol. It's story-telling 101, if you're not understanding the emotional aspect of it, the big moment wont hit -- clearly. But instead of acknowledging the possibility that the dubs may have hurt their viewing of it, they've frequently just ignored that possibility and said blanketly they feel everything the same way as if they'd watch with subs. Which... no. So sure, he can feel free to criticize the ending. He still watched the show and the show isn't criticism-proof (I have my own issues with the ending), so Steve's still totally in the right to do so. It can just be difficult and "cringe" to hear for some of us who just KNOW watching with the dub is a huge difference to watching with the subs, and seeing them not consider that as a possibility.

My fav part of the finale is def the final game between Gi-hun and Sang-woo. Love the poetic "childhood friends turned enemies" trope of it. If either one of them faced off w some other person in the end they probably would've had a more straightforward "kill or be killed" approach to winning. There wouldn't be a tense exchange of words or trying to justify your actions to the other person. But because they were facing off w each other, the stakes felt higher because of the animosity that resulted from their personal choices in the games tainting their history and memories of each other, more so for Gi-hun anyway.

I watched it dubbed as well because I didn't want to be distracted by reading and then watched a video specifically telling me what I missed from the direct correlation. I don't know if this will help you kind of process all aspects of this kind of show, but I figured I'd let you know. I think a big part to remember in observing this type of show is that it really gives you a chance to see Asian story telling. It is a beautiful unique style of art, and the best ones are those that give a glimpse of what are real social norms look like in that culture compared to what is the norm in western civilization. I could give you a list of all the aspects of their world were portrayed very well, but I'm not trying to give you a lecture by any means. Just wanted to let you a perspective that might help you understand some of the choices in the show. Love you Guys!!!

I personally feel as if it's hard to connect to characters in this dub than sub since Korean is the original language and what the actors are speaking. I definitely think tone is lost in translation. But if watching it in dub was best for you guys, no one should be hounding you guys about it. I enjoyed this reaction. Sorry ppl can be buttholes. Yeah it’s really dumb that people get their panties in a wad over choosing to watch it dubbed. I watched it dubbed because I have a problem connecting with the characters of I’m busy reading. I’d rather hear the emotion and see it matched to their facial expressions. Also, many people are visually impaired, so of course they would watch the dubbed version. People are so self righteous.

This. I totally understand why they had to watch the dub - one of the people behind the channel literally has a disability that prevents them from reading subtitles - but you do lose a LOT of the subtleties in the emotion in the dub. I honestly think they hired anime voice actors for this dub, because they speak in that very over-the-top way that you would expect from anime. Thing is, it doesn't really work for a show like this.

I was suspicious by the fact that he was so calm and smiling in the 1st episode when everyone was getting shot, he was always so calm, I found that strange, then when they started killing each other in the cells etc, I found it strange that when the old man started crying saying " I'm scared... i'm afraid we're all gonna die here" I wondered why the front man would care that player 001 said he's scared. But my initial thought was that maybe the person in charge was player 001's son, the son he kept talking about. But I wasn't certain why he was strange to me. I also didn't see him die, so that had me suspicious. And then when they gave a glimpse of the host, his hands were wrinkled and old, so that gave me a hint it may have been playet 001.

The last minute was predictable. He kinda loves his family, but never actually cared about them. Sang woo was harsh, but right about him. He is an addict and dismantling Squid Games is another game for him. Of course, he prefers to play it instead of being with his daughter and living mundane (albeit rich now) life. The money rarely changes human nature. He had always lied and given empty promises preferring to play games (gambling, races and so on), he did exactly the same thing with his daughter again in the end.

No, that is not true. Player 1 is in legit danger throughout all of the games. For example, he was padlocked to the rope and would have died in the tug of war along with everyone else on that team. If he wasn't, there would be no challenge. The only reason he did not die after the marble game is because he wanted to see if his Gganbu would win the money.

I’ve seen theories that depending on whether players chose the red or blue block of paper from the briefcase, this determined whether the person would be a “player” or a person in the red jumpsuit, so the people in red were also apparently playing the game. Thank you for reacting to the dubbed version of Squid Game. I prefer watching foreign films and streaming TV series that have English dubbing because I have poor vision. For me, it is extremely frustrating to pause the film continuously just to read subtitles. Therefore, I truly hope you reconsider and watch the 2nd season of Squid Game if it gets outstanding reviews. Unfortunately, I don’t have friends or family to watch movies or streaming TV series with. Therefore, I have adopted (subscribed to) a few reactors on RU-vid to be in my circle of friends and family. You two became my first adoptees while watching Train to Busan. To see and hear Nikki cry to the overwhelming misery depicted in the film, made the sadness even more devastating. Of course, Train to Busan is one of few foreign films that don’t require reading subtitles to have an emotional investment with the characters. Many other foreign films don’t require reading subtitles or have English dubbing to understand what is going on. For example, I Saw the Devil (2010) and Desierto (2016). Don’t let ignorant people influence you from watching these excellent films. Consider having moderators delete negative or annoying comments then post acceptable comments for your viewing. This will protect you emotionally and psychologically from destructive comments. You can also have a foreign content channel with only English dubbing or visual and auditory comprehension (no English dubbing and optional subtitle reading).

You are wrong about the tug of war. He IS chained to the rope, you can clearly see it in the behind the scenes videos. Player 1 was in legit danger throughout the games. He only exerts his authority twice: once to stop the special game in the dorm room, and at the end after he has lost in the marble game, which he only did because he wanted to see if Gi-hun would win the money. Player 1 was willing to die, because the tumor in his head is real, so he is already a dead man.

the old man name "Il Nam" literally means "one man/first man". He basically created this whole thing just so he can play his childhood game before he died. In the marble game (the Gganbu episode), he has to "lose" because he knows he has a very thin chance to pass the game in the next one which is the tempered glass game. Hence, that is why they didn't show his "minions" shot him in the last episode.

@@NikkiStevenReact I mean, as someone who watches a lot of stuff in this particular genre ("death game" style shows), and as someone who has studied the craft of writing... I personally completely disagree that there was a lack of substance. I was actually impressed by how subtle and complex this show was, compared to every other death game show/movie I've seen. Especially Western ones, which often don't bother to put much time into their characters, because they think the death traps are the real draw. I mean sure, the reason for the death games was underwhelming - but I also think that was the point. In real life, there isn't always some big, grand meaning; and I think that's what the writer was trying to capture. Gi-Hun wants there to be a reason for the suffering, a reason for the death, a reason for it all. And there isn't one. It just happened. Sometimes bad things just happen - and that's terrifying.

Looking back a couple of giveaways player one was part of it were, when ppl were killing each other in the sleeping hall he shouted for it to stop...and the masked man then stopped it,and gane he "died" in he knew the next game was the bridge so knew he couldn't get through that one.
