The girl who gave her life for Sae-Byok mentions having mojitos in the Maldives. The actor who plays the Front Man did a movie where he talks about having mojitos in the Maldives. She even says his name, Lee Byung-hun. He was also Storm Shadow in the G.I. Joe movie. One last thing. Did you notice that the pin number Gi-hun entered after leaving the game is 0456. I just noticed watching it with you guys and realized that is his number in the game, 456.

He missed his daughter's birth because he was part of a labor strike in which his friend was badly beaten by police. The director based this on real life Ssangyong Motor strike in 2009.

@@Muzzi. I think you are both making the same point tbh - he's always stuck by his own moral code and values the lives of others over his own desires. That's why he looked after his friend whilst he died at the strike over seeing his child's birth, why he chose the old man in game 4 knowing it could potentially put him at a disadvantage, why he was willing to give up the money to save Sang-woo and why he decided to take down the games instead of visiting his kid. It's sad that he's chosen not to see her right now, but he'll never be at peace knowing there are people being murdered and that him and his family will forever be watched. I get why others are frustrated with his decision, but like you both said, it's in character and I think it's a pretty selfless trait of his.

@@Muzzi. Yes, I am agreeing with you. He consistently feels compelled help the common man who is being very hurt by those in power. That being said, he does steal from his mother and neglects his daughter. But that's why I like the show is great. It shows that people are complex.

@@davidk3422 It's more than hilarious when some irrelevant English teacher trying to teach and lecture Koreans what Korean culture is. There was a poor guy. He had to work very hard for a sick wife and had no choice but leave her home. One day he felt the work is even harder and ominous than usual, but he met generous 'guests' and made some extra money. The guy came back home happy with the money and food and found his wife to feed was already lying dead. All the struggle for the money became totally meaningless. The guy broke down. The theme is about the poor suffering under cruel circumstance(Japanese colonial rule/Korean Capitalism). The plot is exactly same. There's Korean proverb for ya. "가만히 있으면 중간은 간다." Do shut up for certain subject you are completely and utterly ignorant of.

@@davidk3422 Well, when Koreans hear the title "One Lucky Day," they immediately think of famous novels that often appear in Korean textbooks, and they are very famous novels that remind people of their school days. As a Korean, when I heard the title of episode 9, I thought someone was going to die Since the person who made the squid game is also Korean, writing this title means that someone will die, and the content and title itself are ironic.

Yes!! I thought the same thing, how it really looked like a real fight, it doesn't have that "epic quality" we normally see in screen fights. The knife in the hand is even more realistic, in fact a lot of people that are killed or defend themselves get these kind of injuries because it's almost a natural reaction to put your hand in front of you to protect yourself.

Totally agree with this. The non-choreo fight also adds to the tension!

@@NaFran49 One thing I wish they explained was how Gi-Hun managed to get back to the real world with the injuries he sustained in the final game. He got stabbed in the thigh, the side of the torso AND through his hand. Did they patch him up after the games?

@@Rakerong I agree they could have made it more clear. We don't know for sure how much time passed between the end of the last game and Gi-hun being dumped on the streets. But I guess they must have patched him up somehow because he did not seem to be in pain or bleeding at that time in the car or walking to his home.

I think they patched him up, saw a bandage in his hand when he was in the limo

The director’s debut film flopped in 2008. It received good reviews but didn’t do well enough to break even and lost money for the investors. The housing bubble bust in the US also happened in 2008 which had a huge worldwide financial impact. The director had a huge debt living with his mother and grandmother similar to Gi-hun. He also had another film written that he couldn’t find financing for. Obviously no one was going to invest in any of his projects. This is when he wrote Squid Game.

@@B_Ella1269 yup, Gi-hun character was based on his own life. Since 2008 he has become a successful director prior to Squid Game. I don't know how aggressively he shopped around the script but Netflix was a good match I guess.

I second that!! It's so much more because again like in Squid Game it's all about the characters, even though the whole concept of the show is amazing. I find Kingdom to be even better than Squid Game (which I also loved).

I think you're reaching about this particular role proving his versatility, he was barely in it, all he did was slap someone around playfully then he's gone. Need a lot more performance to judge his villain acting abilities but I have no doubt he'd do well as a main villain in a show/movie.

It was going to be a cameo from the start. It doesn’t make sense to expand his character for season 2. They already have two main characters - Gi-hun and Frontman (the biggest Korean actor)

@@pencil6965 intriguing at first, sure, then as the show progresses you figure out he's just one of many recruiters lol. Nothing indicates that he was anything more than that. "We only have one spot left" could indicate exactly that, since Gi Hun was the last player to join after all. Doesnt mean hes a higher up/mastermind. Remember that in ep 2 it was shown that they had footage of every single contestant participating in the slap game, so that means there is probably more than one recruiter. A lot of people who found him to be memorable/intriguing are people who have a crush on him/ or is a fan of him. Nothing wrong with that but don't over exaggerate his role. Don't get me wrong though, I'm a fan of his work so far but I'm not a fan of over-hyping just for the sake of over-hyping. Dude had two scenes in the show. I would hardly call that "proving versatility". Hell, I can hardly call him a villain in the show. Dude was just slapping people and giving them money bwahahaha But yes, he could definitely play an evil villain role. No doubt about that.

Kingdom might be 1 of the best things I've watched on Netflix along with Mindhunter.
