I've never seen a death game do this: actually let the players quit. Battle royale, hunger games, Danganronpa, no one. It's something so unthinkable cause why would they come back right? It hits so much harder now that I know they *chose* this, like they are less of a victim. The show proved to us what they said is true, their normal lives is actually worse than the game.
@nikeadidas9555
@nikeadidas9555 2 года назад
Agreed, on top of that, completely showcasing everyones backgrounds and their reasoning to need the game. They let the players choose between a gamble of life and death for money over the torture of staying alive in their normal lives. Every day outside the game is hell, so why not take a gamble and see if you can win the game? You have something to lose, but also you have nothing to lose. The players are shown their own hell and become cornered to the decision that the game is their salvation. You really get to understand the motivation for the players in this episode.

I really like your discussion about the cultural aspects of the episode/show regarding the North Korean and foreigner issues in South Korea. North Koreans do have a very distinct accent… not to mention their expressions and certain words are quite different. So, they would be recognized instantly if they spoke in public in South Korea. The guy that deceived the North Korean girl and got threatened by her in this episode has a very strong North Korean accent. So, basically, one North Korean defector scammed another poor North Korean defector and her family. As for foreigners, South Korea has been struggling with multiculturalism. There is a lot of racism, too. Recently, there are more inter-racial couples in Korea. But, even 15 years ago, it was quite rare. And, of course, a lot of foreigners come to work and get exploited like in this show. The director and writers probably wanted to show these societal/cultural struggles in Korea in this show. As for the Indian actor, his character is from Pakistan. The actor is Indian. You will know in the next episode. I don’t think it is a spoiler, so I am letting you know.
@lightup6751
@lightup6751 2 года назад
Yeah but North Koreans are integrated, freely funded and educated when they come here. Also racism exists in korea but not more than anywhere with 99% homogenous society. Furthermore and interesting, there is basically zero violent racist crime. Which sure beats being jumped for looking different. The illegal immigration working is an issue for illegals. You cant be exploited like Ali if you have papers. But its an issue that people like him are treated so poorly.

SK has highest minimum wage in Asia (11 USD) and it applies to immigrant workers of course. if you don't get paid you report. unfortunately Ali is an illegal immigrant... NK girl speaks NK dialect and the Broker speaks in Chinese accent. if you listen to their intonation closely, you get the difference. Gi-hun needed to pay 2k USD for diabetic treatment and you know thats cheap bc its already insured by national insurance. the insurance Gi-hun's talking about is an private insurance that comes on top of national one hwich automatically covers all korean nationals and legal residents from abroad.

@so_rhapsody
@so_rhapsody 2 года назад
I absolutely love your reactions. 9:38 This scene is about homonyms. In Korea, gifts and futures are the same pronunciation. Since futures are jargon, the general public does not know them well, and most recognize them as gifts. 14:19 This is the scene where Sang-woo tries to commit suicide. Burning briquettes or lightning coal releases carbon monoxide, and poisoning to carbon monoxide in an enclosed space causes difficulty breathing and eventually leads to death.
@shibadawn
@shibadawn Год назад
Carbon Monoxide doesn't make it hard to breathe, it bonds to your blood cells, so they aren't able to carry around oxygen. It's why you should be aware if you start feeling sleepy out of nowhere around flames or boilers, because carbon monoxide makes you go to sleep, that's why it so dangerous. It's also denser than air if i remember correctly, so if you're higher up you're less likely to breath it in. It's a very silent killer, and once you're asleep, you don't really stand a chance.

Futures are a financial industry thing. Basically, it's a contract that you'll pay the current price for something, but you won't get it until later, at which point the price may have changed. So it's basically gambling on what the prices of the stock market will be in the future. (At least, that's how I understand it; financial stuff is just jargon on top of abstraction on top of more jargon.)

North Korean refugees get offered financial supports and settlement programs by South Korean government upon their arrival as far as I understand. However, when they run out all the supports, it could be quite challenging for some refugees to take care of themselves as "South" Koreans due to cultural and social differences they have never experienced. In Sae-byeok's case, she needs to find a way to bring her parents so she hired a broker, who is a Korean-Chinese(based on his Korean accent) and a big time scammer. About Ali, I think he is an illegal worker, that is why he cannot take any legal actions to get his salary that he deserves and the employer knows it so well so he is manipulating the situation.

I don’t know so much about stock as well…but as far as I know Future is like a you buy stocks in advance. So he ends up with a lot of debt. And for NK girl, since a war between SK and NK is technically not over yet. So there is no way that government suuport them to escape from there, then it will cause so many problem related to war. So NK ppl usually pay brokers to get throguh China or south east asia to get to SK. But once they arrive there, after several months of checking if they’re not suspicious like a spy, they’re free to live in SK as citizen. And it’s true that there is some prejudice towards them, but it’s not much like “garbage”. And about portraiting uncomfortable points of society, we don’t feel bad about it unless it’s a pure lie. If we want to hide it, there wouldn’t have been a parasite from the first place. Oscar, netflix..we don’t care.

More than half of the North Korean population has watched South Korean movies and dramas at the risk of being put in jail if they are caught watching them. Kim jung-en ordered to their citizen not to say 'oppa' in their daily conversation or they will be put in jail for 3 years at least. Oppa literally refers to a girl's older brother. But here in Korea, she can call her husband or boyfriend Oppa when he is older than she. But in North Korea, you can call oppa only to her old brother. So Kim jung en ordered to put anyone in jail to serve 3 years at least if she calls oppa other than her older brother

23:25 FYI Basically no natural resources in Korea, but they had to boost their economy. → So the word "human resource" has more serious meaning in this country. → Which leads to very high passion for education. → People exposed to deadly competition. → Physical labour considered some kind of failing. That explains why Korea marks the world's highest suicide rate & lowest birth rate. → With current rate, Korea's population will be cut down to 70% in 50 years, to 30% in 100 years. That means young generations have to sustain 2~3 times large number of elders in few years and it already started. → Literally there are no working forces in some fields like agriculture, manufacturing, and so on. So yes, a LOT of migrant workers are working in Korea. Mainly south-east asians who are replacing korean-chinese's place. Korean-chineses were used to be industrial workers once, but they are doing what overseas chinese are doing in every other countries. (gathering up in specific region and only work for their own/family businesses) For example, Ansan. (industrial satellite city, where Ali's home located in SG) Migrant workers hold 8% of population and it's drastically increasing. As the number increases, problems like badass employers and worker's crime rates are popping up.

Omg! LOL! I love how you said that your mom told you that your stomach would explode, because that's exactly how we used to eat ramen when we're little, in primary, and one of my classmates told me that. But instead of your stomach exploding, she said you'll grow white plastic in your stomach. ROFL!

There is a Real Life Lore video detailing how difficult it is to escape North Korea and the consequences when getting caught. It's pretty chilling. I thought about the possibility of being kidnapped in South Korea and transported to North Korea.

the conditions of migrant workers is not as bad as you might think. Korean laws protect them well. Also, there are no guns in Korea except in the military. They are very rare. Even the cops don't carry guns. And North Koreans in SK are not treated in a back or white way. There is not as much hostility because of the laws but differences are there for sure.

16:55 haha. I went to uni in China and was known as the girl who always left a nongshim ramen cup outside my door at night for the cleaning people to throw out. My best friend there tried to convince me the same thing. I didn't totally understand the science words he was using but he even showed me on his phone x-rays of intestines and I was like 'whatev bro!! Nongshim is 🏆'

I've watched a number of kdramas and cinema on Netflix. I'm really digging the acting and writing. I have already seen the series. Not going to give any spoilers. I'm enjoying some of the reactions, not just you guys and your brothers channels. I like seeing how you are all trying to piece it all together. Each episode just gets you more invested in the main characters.

We all know what's going on with foreign workers since most of us come across them in our daily lives. We just didn't have good enough actors to portray those types of characters for cinemas in depth. I hope the trend would continue.
