very good catch, thx for that, yes, the zippers do seem to reference the frenzy of the 1920's in Germany and other places in Europe. Fascinating decade, could the 2020's repeat ?
Your momma never told you How you were 'sposed to treat a girl. Your poppa never told you and Now you're all alone out in the world. Sirens are streaming Inside the winding sheets are pale. Devils are dreaming Dreaming of the blue angel. Now I lay me down to sleep But troubled dreams are all I find. Pray the Lord my soul to keep Pray so I won't lose my mind. Streetlights come streaming On wings tonight, I'll soon set sail. Devils are dreaming Dreaming of a blue angel. Your momma's going to take it hard You always were your momma's boy. Your laying in the graveyard Now you're not your momma's joy. Silence is screaming I'll bat an eye and cast my spell. Devils are dreaming Dreaming of a blue angel.
This band has inspired me to start singing again. I love this music and my taste stands way out from all my musical friends who are all into much heavier sounds for the most part. Thanks so much for helping me to find my voice again.
Me and my 84-year-old dad used to blast this CD (and their other ones) really loud and scat along with them. They're brilliant. All these obscure scales and musical in-jokes.
It’s an outstanding pastiche. I remember reading about when she finished this take of the song, she said something along the lines of “I totally became the person who sings this song.” Pretty sure she meant Billie Holiday lol.
Keighlyn Cady Good on ya kid for listening to , and enjoying ,different genres of music. I merely wanted to point out that swing and jazz are still very much relevant in this day and age. There are jazz festivals held all over the world every year, as well as new jazz releases every week from artists around the globe. Swing too has had a new lease of life in the form of electro swing, which combines old school styles with modern beats. We don't need to bring swing or jazz back , as, it effectively never went anywhere. Keep listening to good music. Peace.
I bought a bag of Squirrel Nut Zipper from the Mast General Store just because I Heard the name of this group. Candy and Music from the 20s and 30s...awesome!
TheD West Aww is the baby crying because he had no friends growing up. And now he has to pick on people online to make himself feel no better about himself. Poor poor little crybaby D.

of course that's what I meant. I frist saw SNZ when they were playing local clubs in Chapel Hill. For that matter, I'm sure the candy I bought was not made 80 years ago...it would have gone bad by now!
Cat's Cradle was the venue I saw them at last. It was a Halloween show everyone had on costumes, they let me bring my dog into the show and I smoked out Jimbo in my car after the show.
Wild style of Voice ! Very different music compared to the Led Zeppelin distorted blues music I listen to. She sounds very close to dead Amy Winehouse in someways ! LIKE !!!
i heard this song on the manhole to, At first i thought it was a fat black woman singing this song but theres other songs ive heard on the manhole to theres a song that goes , "Hello Darlin theres so much more in you" or something like that, it sounds a lot like i forgot what his name but hes a fat black guy and he has a raspy type voice, and thers also another song i heard on the manhole to its some sorta retro 70s song it goes something like "we goin home at the wrong at the wrong one"
I love this song, but every time I’m done listening to it I’m reminded of that Star Trek meme. The one where the Romulan is holding a doctored recording and exclaims “IT’S A FAKE!”
Katherine Whalen is her name, they were originally based out of Carrboro North Carolina. The band's original line-up were simply phenomenal performing live gigs.
Little help here, please? Other than the obvious -- the original "Blue Angel," which I'm assuming this appeared in (but I've never seen) -- what movie(s) has this been used in? Because I know I've heard it as part of some soundtrack or another, but I haven't a clue where / when / how. Thanks in advance for any knowledge.
The song is an original by SNZ, probably inspired by the movie which I think is early '30s(?). So no, it wasn't in that movie. I'm not sure that this song has been used in any movie, not that I know of. The main song in 'The Blue Angel' is "Falling in Love Again".
+MsSardonicus Thank you. There's something so compelling about this piece -- haunting, it is.Such mastery of its idiom -- it's got the same might that makes "Gloomy Sunday" a perennial powerhouse. These people are geniuses (genii?).
