We saved it to the DVR the first time it aired and we haul it out now and then to watch it again. Our condo is separated from others in the complex by a fairy ring of redwoods and misc deciduous trees and it’s a squirrel festival here year round. They’re such amazing creatures. Dismissing them as “rats with tails“, like a neighbor does, is such an injustice. (But it’s also an injustice to the rat, which has survived and adapted quite successfully for millennia!) Thank you, Nature! .It and Nova are the shows we never miss.

It wasn't a one step red, two steps blue... it was jump in the middle of the platform because it's stable regardless of the colour. You can clearly see that at the end when they do it across the whole course.

Another perfect demonstration why scientists and animal filmers ALWAYS will come short when it comes to the solution finding of animals, even, or rather especially, when the people setting up such problems BELIEVE they have figured out all ways to solve the problem. Watch and learn: nature, especially animals will nearly ALWAYS surprise you by finding a solution you HAVEN'T thought of.

Would be nice to see if they associate colors with springiness. If they do you should be able to change the position of the obstacles and they will know exactly what obstacle is static and which is wiggly.

Squirrels are incredibly intelligent. It took everything I had to come up with the Evictor Strobe Light........ to evict squirrels in attics.

Human logic: red is difficult so let's learn to avoid it. Squirrel logic: it's a straight shot with some difficult reds in the path, let's learn to overcome them.

They’re also landing/jumping off pretty much the exact middle of the red ones, which would reduce the wobble, compared to landing/jumping off the edges of the blue ones

You think Squirrels are dumb, think again. They learn from their previous mistakes and will eventually get to the food. Squirrels are stubborn and very persistent when it comes to getting food. I have seen allot of you-tube videos with squirrels getting to the food even with various deter obstacles in the way.

👍 #2K+ Hello friend, I have just stumbled across your channel via this video of the fabulous Squirrel obstacle course. I too have learned as recently as last week at how clever Squirrels are at quickly figuring out where there are nuts and how to overcome and obstacle to get to them. ◕‿◕ I spent 5 days going back to film the Reds I stumbled upon after filming a Jay in woodland and turning around to see a Red Squirrel in my bag tearing a bag of peanuts open! Back to your obstacle course, I am now considering perhaps trying to set something up for a little fun, but nothing as advanced as your incredible experiment with the coloured discs which they soon figured out. How amazing they figured out a single step on red and 2 on the blue discs was the best way to get there. Thanks for sharing this as it was an incredible and most enjoyable watch. Have a great Christmas! 👍◕‿◕

The squirrel learnt how to balance but not the difference between color plates. I suggest increase the distabce between the plates.

I found here in texas there are two dominant species of squirrel the one that wins the dunce hat has a gloden tan underside the one that can be caught trained and become outright playful has the white underbelly I caught one and after observing it I decided to just turn it loose in my room. After a few days it started coming out of hiding soon it was sleeping in my sock drawer. Eating and playing with me after a few months I let it out because I had to go to the hospital.

They see the screw in the middle and thats there mark to jump to and even if you painted that they'd figure out the stability. Speed is there factor, the faster you travel through the course the easier it gets.
