Its been a great bike. I've done all the things that remained to make it more trail worthy ie: 2nd & 5th gear swap, battery relocate, super pinion sprocket, hand guards, skid plate and so on, BUT I have not had to touch anything to do with the tuning the Wizard performed on it. It run beautifully, starts easily, and pulls great through the RPM range. If I had bought a new one I would've had to do all the things Kaplan America did to it anyway so I fell like I got a good deal. @@fieldsfamilycookingandoutdoors
I hate that Honda motorcycles stopped making 2 strokes. But I love that they still make the trusted XR650L unchanged for decades. Looking to get one soon to add to my collection.
Do you guys change out the counter shaft sprocket? I'm currently building with 2nd/5th gear mods, a-loop kit, superbrace, oil-cooler, xr600r kick-start assembly, FCR41 carb, fmf Q, just as a play bike. Gonna keep the lights but runnin full knobbies. I want a new white themed 22 just to keep stock for jogging around on... God Bless
I’ve managed to squeeze an XL500S motor (1978) into a Honda CB250RS chassis. Wiseco 10.6:1 piston, pod filter and twin megaphones. Carb upjetted - +5% on the primary main jet, +10% on the secondary main-jet, and a small washer (M3) under the needle clip. Spot on, and it flies, with XBR500 gearing. I’m too short in the leg for an XL or XR.
I've had a ton of XRs throughout the years, everything from a 250R to a 650R and L (I still kick myself for selling the 650R)....(And I remember the routine of kick-starting an '86 XR600R - DO NOT GIVE IT GAS! It will snap your ankle like it's balsa wood! ) I was stationed in Hawaii and watching John DeSoto blow away KX and CR 500s in Kahuku on the north shore of Oahu on a stock XR250R back in the 80s and early 90s...... And then there's Scott Summers and patron saint, Al Baker. And so, from a wealth of wisdom and experience, the tool bag behind the seat is only fit for a car wash sponge. Anything else will be lost along the trail when the zipper fails. And it will, fail. The sponge has no weight and will puff the tool bag up to look impressive on the trails. BRAAAAAAP!
I'm fixing to go work on my Big Red Pig here in a few minutes. Just got the motor put back in the frame after doing a 675 kit last week. Hopefully that and the Hotcams stage 1 cam will give it a lil more ooomph. Already desmoged it and added the 42mm flat slide kit. Great video and thanks for some extra motivation.
This is the steed that could carry me around the world. -I would need carbon bags, and some other stuff. Li was smart for the electric. Dreamride stuff.... Go anywhere stuff. Gorgeous, classic in the making.
I’m looking for that 1 ! I’m now able to enjoy myself & get myself a gift ! Retired. . Need some Rx in life after a long career ! See you all soon ken sr. Thanks & God Bless🇺🇸
Same here, mine had an edelbrock carb, white bros full system it was absolutely mint condition 760 miles by one anal owner. Never jelled whith it tho but had a tidy profit when I sold it.
Ive tried more times then i can count to tune my xr i finally just gave up..i dont know what it is with these things but if you get the throttle crackin on them you cant get them to idle very low..if you get them to idle low you cant get the throttle to crack..i could change the carb out but aside from the little bit of a high idle the thing it runs just as good as the flat side and i allready have a bigger carb soo..anyhow with that carb i can tell just by hearing the idle its not a ripper of an xr
Hey did you try the fmf powerbomb on the modified xr650l? I know you tried xrs only and it was worst than stock. I pulled my xrs only off mine because mine is just stage 1
It would be a real shame for anyone to ride this bike stock as it needs to be uncorked just to even run properly even more so than any other off road toy ever created. The monster TQ must be incredible and addictive on this thing though once it's all sorted out. Have fun on the BRP for me because I can't lol.
The improvements are great !! Almost perfect, now it’s only need thicker Front sprocket and aluminum rear rack🙂. I personally prefer stock taillight but it’s just a matter of personal taste 🙂.
Sweet I got a 96 XR650L I need to get out there and get the carbs sorted. BTW your flag sticker on your helmet... stars need to be going forward into battle...
So, this bike has had a lot of weight taken off. Just out of curiosity, what becomes of the removed weight? Where does it go? This matter is really quite heavy.
Great build! I just bought a 2017 with 165 mile on it, it has the smog delete and a FMF pipe, unfortunately the carb is an issue now, pops and backfires and barley idles., Can you tell me what jets sizes you guys ended up using and the needle setting and any other carb adjustmnets made using the Dyno Jet Kit? I plan to follow the mods you guys did , but need to get this thing running right first. Thank you for any help
Don't forget to get the air injection block off plate. This really helps with the backfire problem. I owned a 1994 650 L. The gap between first and second gear was very annoying. Gearing it down helped some.
Nice ride. Really want to open it up? Stage 1 cam, 14/48 sprockets (Fritzco only), and do the 2nd and 5th tranny gear mod. It will out perform just about anything Belgium (KTM, Husky, et al) can produce (in class) and do it on low octane gas...with the reliability of a Honda.
Sweet, it's nice to let them breathe, and stretch their legs. I live in Northern California, near the Oregon border. This bike is ideal for this, with just one more mod. IMS, large capacity fuel cell. I believe the air scoops are built into the tank. But only a gallon of gas? Playful riding, limits where I can go and make it back. But this bike is built for big men. I'm not saying you can't ride the bike if you're under 6 ft, it just fits larger riders better. PS: and got to do something about that seat, for the larger riders. Again it's nice to see a piece of hard work done right!!
Id love to have an XL650 but im not a big dude. Power is fine and i've driven one before on and off road (amazing off-road machines, id trust one to cross a desert anytime) .. but just way to tall for me
I'm not tall either and I knew in stk form it would be too high for me but this is what I wanted so I got the lowering link and pushed the forks up the trees about an 1".
Can you share the dynajet sizes you used to rejet the carb? I have basically the same setup (fmf with k&n air filter) and have had a hard time jetting the thing. Thanks!
@@alecboswell5527 Im at sea level. Took the snorkel out and currently run a carb that has had the daves mod done to it. Run a needle shimmed .20", 55 pilot, and a 158 main.

@@mwah33100 just did mine yesterday. I’m at 1100 ft. So close to sea level. 165 main with the needle at setting 4.5.(dyno jet washer under clip 4). Will have to trim the top of needle off to get slide retainer to clip into place. 52 pilot at 1/2 turn. With a tail pipe sniffer it runs about 13.2 to one across the range. So imo in a good middle ground for fuel to air. All uncorked. Stalls when ripping on the throttle when head temp is below 140 degrees but none at all after that. Seems to run very smooth and strong. I didn’t drill the slide. I used the softer spring in the kit. Dg quiet pipe. No snorkel. Uni filter. De smogged. Hope this helps.
