Mani mama - Soundscaping or sound design is also an art and an integral part of music... creating music only with melody or composing with one or no instrument while amazing, does not have to be the central piece in music. At its core, how is melody not a form of sound-scaping or engineering? Where did the harmonium come from? Have you considered that it was cutting edge technology the day after it was invented? Can you pitch bend on a harmonium like a veena or violin? By using your own standards of musical purity, I would contend that you shouldn’t use the harmonium as it cannot properly render gamakas and sliding scales. Should we call blasphemy then on the harmonium sullying the holy waters of this high art form? (We shouldn’t). Also, since you seem so reviled by sound “producers”, perhaps you should try performing concerts or cutting an album in the future without the sound engineering mixing or mastering artists. To the modern wars, sound producers/artists have the ability to transport you to another world. Sounds exactly the same as what melody producers are trying to do. Your generation did stunning work creating melodic compositions based on raagas. But the world is more connected and there are other frameworks to produce music. Be it Kuthu, Gaana or Jazz. Accepting, learning and enjoying those works including “sound production” as musical art shows an evolved mind, in my view. I can’t help but think of an imaginary old iyer mama (not old in age), back in the day, yelling at his son for participating in the forbidden sensual dirty business called movies and producing “music” for the same. And that too, producing music with a harmonium! Lol. While I say all that, you are still a superb artist in my mind and deserve much respect to you for your contributions to music. “Sound producers” are musical artists too and deserve the same respect as Indian classical melody creators.
