Lalgudi magic: A nugget from Krishna Gana Sabha, 1996, to celebrate the maestro’s birthday:
Shri Lalgudi Jayaraman’s fascination for Bindumalini is well known. His interpretation and presentation of Shri Thyagaraja’s ‘Enthamudho Enthasogaso’, a widely celebrated rendition, is proof of his excitement while engaging with the raga’s form and many facets.
It is little surprise that he chose to compose a Thillana in this raga, packing in it all the wonderment, enchantment and beauty that its notes carry.
We are thrilled to have found this video clip of Shri Lalgudi singing this Thillana for the first time at Sri Krishna Gana Sabha in 1996. The seemingly simple sounding Thillana, composed by him in the early 90s, might conceal the sophisticated melodic ideas and the complex rhythmic patterns in it, but a keen listener cannot miss the quiet magic behind it. As he notes in the sahithyam, it is ‘Ananda raga Nadha Bindhumalini’ indeed!
He is accompanied by Sri S.P Ramh (Vocal support), Sri Lalgudi GJR Krishnan (violin) and Vidwan Sri R Ramesh on the Mridangam.
