🇱🇰 SRI LANKA - Sri Lanka Gypsy people: do you know there are Gypsies in Sri Lanka? I decided to search for them around Anuradhapura and I found them. They are a small community with an independent culture and their own language. They are now moving towards stable habitats and the majority of them are snake charmers or put on monkey performance in different cities. This is how they live: let me introduce you the Gypsies of Sri Lanka.

When I was a kid who's living in Sri Lanka, Gypsies had caravans and they were constantly moving. Everyone was afraid of them because of their black magic. Now they have started to mix with the general population and build houses. It's good thing that they are earning more and having families with fixed housing but at the same time, there won't be Gypsies anymore after ten more years because they will start different jobs and spread out.

No they’re not! They are a small community in Sri Lanka who once very nomads but nowadays are becoming more stable. They are snake charmers mostly 😀and yes, they were friendly!

Dear Putha, it is interesting that you come out as an adventurous young man. You seem to be protecting your culture coming from ancestors! But removing the fangs of cobra is not appreciable because when fangs removed he is unable to eat his food! It is known that when Mr Bandaranaike came to power in 1956 he initiated the giving lands to gypsy people so that they may start a sedentary life. You seem to be a successful young man! The people obviously have a lot of pride in their village as it is so well kept and beautiful and very well planted. Also young people are happily living there in a very natural way. I had no idea there were Telagu people in Sri Lanka, lovely to learn new things about this lovely country.great video with fresh and interesting content even for someone who used to live in SL. The snakes were fascinating too.

This is awesome . I have seen and heard of these prople growing up. Nver knew they spoke telagu. also it is amazing that they have been given houses and have permenant homes now. long ago ahikuntika meant people who did not have a permenant home. how you found them is amazing. I love it that you cover these unusual topics rather than the regualr stuff tourists do.

Telugu people speak the Telugu language and are natives of the Indian states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. The Nayaks of Kandy, the last dynasty to rule the Sri Lankan Kingdom of Kandy, were of Telugu origin. They spoke Telugu and Tamil, and used Sinhala and Tamil as their court languages. A small minority among the Indian-origin Hill Country Tamils living in Sri Lanka also have Telugu origins, but they can only identify with their clan-based surnames because they shifted their language from Telugu to Tamil. (Reddy, Reddiyar, Naidu, etc.)

Pretty sure I have met Barbara & Michael Jackson at Galle face green. Gypsies in Europe have a reputation for not keeping their surroundings clean, but this Gypsy village in SL looks well maintained.

When we were small ,gypsies were wandering people. They stayed in one place only for a week . Women were going out palm reading. I think late president R Premadasa built houses for those people when he was housing minister .

Davuds experience with the modern vedda community is not that a tourist should undergo. Now they hoodwink the visitors with bogus acts which was not there fifty to sixty years ago. Understandably they are for money. Time has changed so they too are struggling for their livelihood.
