My family loved it. Having had the unexpected of living in Sri Lanka, through from the very start of the political and economic turmoil, which pushed millions of Sri Lankans to the brink, and I lived like a local, a real local. And meal times weren't just a to eat, firstly, but it was also a celebration, every meal time; a happy place. Real, authentic Sri Lankan food deserves a seat at the top table of some of the best global quisines. And for Sri Lanka, the food and simple lifestyle is one of the reasons why tourists still flock to beautiful Sri Lanka. Thank you for this recipe!

Thank you for your kind words about Sri Lanka. I really hope you get a chance to visit the countr again. If not anything, we are resilient and manage to survive despite what a few idiots who are ruling the country put us through. I hope when you visit that things have not changed much for you, we still tend to have meals with family and make it a celebration although it's difficult to get everyone together in one place frequently. You are most welcome for the recipe and hope you enjoy other recipes on the you tube channel as well as on my recipe blog which I'm trying to convert into videos here. regards and best wishes, J

Amazing recipe Sis. I would add half a teaspoon of Fenugreek (Uluhaal) and a small piece of Pandan leaves ( Rampe) to take it to the next level...
@islandsmile4902
@islandsmile4902 2 года назад
Thanks shekar, I should try adding fenugreek next time but since there's a mustard tempering, figured the mustard taste would completely overpower the fenugreek taste hence the omission. I do add pandan leaves as it is readily availabe in my garden and you are correct love the distinct yet subtle flavors of the pandan. Some find it difficult to find pandan leaf where they live so didn't want to give them a reason not to make the recipe because they couldn't find certain ingredients. Will definitely add the suggestion on the written recipe on the blog though. Thank you so much for your feedback, much appreciated.

Your video appers to have way more than 1/2 cup of water. I had to use 1.5 cups of water to get it to cook properly but otherwise it came out very well.
@islandsmile4902
@islandsmile4902 2 года назад
Hi Madshak, The reason I have reduced the amount of water is because we will be cooking the dhal again with coconut milk. this would bring the dhal to the correct consistency. Also, some like a little bite to the dhal curry as well, hence the reduced amount of water. Thank you for trying out the recipe and glad it came out well for you. regards, J

I'm living in middle East... very hard to find out coconut milk? what if i cook without it?
@islandsmile4902
@islandsmile4902 Год назад
Hi Scap, I've lived in middle east too and they definitely have coconut milk, both in liquid and powder form. but if you can't find it, you can cook without it, only the dhal curry will be very thin and waterish. here are two options alternatives. 1/add 2-3 tablespoons of regular fresh milk to thicken the dhal. I do this sometimes when I don't have coconut milk in the house. 2/ cooking cream? if this is available. hope this info is helpful. regards J

@islandsmile4902

Hi Bee A. No, these red lentils don"t need to be soaked at all, they turn soft very quickly.
