Ever wondered what those strange badges are that appeared on WWII Waffen-SS vehicles? In this video, we examine Himmler's use of ancient runes as mystical symbols for the SS, and what each major rune actually represented.
For those who'd like more information about the fascinating subject of SS formation, uniforms and symbols,I recommend Robin Lumsden's comprehensive study 'The Allgemeine-SS', which was the primary source for this video. Visit Osprey to buy your copy: www.ospreypublishing.com/uk/a...

As a German Historian working for the IFZ in Munich i just wanna add this about Rune and even Swastika Usage in German History and Culture some might find interesting: So, for example down here in Southern Bavaria in the Alpine Region it's not uncommon to go to a Graveyard and instead of the "Star = next to Date of Birth" and "Cross = next to Date of Death" you see an "Algiz Rune" facing upwards next to Date of Birth and one facing downwards next to Date of Death. You even see that on Gravestones from the late 1700s. The "Algiz Rune" in general is also very common in the Exterieur Design of a traditional "Fachwerkhaus". Same is true for many other Runes. Regarding Swastikas, you mostly see "Rounded Swastikas" or "Sunwheels" also from all the way back, here in the Bavarian Alps we got a "Jagdvilla" that was built in 1623 and it has a huge round Swastika/Sunwheel above the Entrance. It's so common here because "Alpine Paganism" is one of those old pre-christian Beliefs and Culture that is native here and because when Christianity converted everyone, they didn't bother as much with us Mountain Folks in and around the Alps. So luckily because of that, these Traditions survived to this Day. For example: My Paternal Grandfather is from an Alpine Pagan Family (he's still alive at 104 years old now and a WW2 Veteran). Meanwhile my Paternal Grandmother was a Catholic. So once my Paternal Grandfather dies he already told me he wants the Algiz Runes for Date of Birth and Death when it's added under the Star and Cross of his Wife. "Perchtenlauf" for example is a Tradition that exists all around the Alps, in France, Switzerland, Austria, Italy (but with a different Name and some other Differences. But it's an Alpine Pagan Tradition, that's also where Krampus originates from. Prost & Cheers from Berchtesgaden in the Bavarian Alps

Very interesting. I grew up in the Chiltern Hills in England, watching my Aunt, Uncle and volunteers, pull Saxon cremation urns out of the chalky soil. Many of the clay vessels were stamped with rows of Swastikas.
@chartreux1532
@chartreux1532 6 дней назад
@@wolfmauler That's interesting to hear, had no idea about that. But yeah, the Swastika, even the non-rounded Version has been present in Cultures around the World since forever. There is this Myth of the NSDAP stealing it from Hinduism that seems to be very wide-spread. But as Historian, the Reality is, that "Moustache Man" grew up during a Time of Revival and Popularity of our Germanic Pagan Roots, which was started because in the latter half of the 1800s Archeologists found a lot of Germanic Pagan Artifacts on which there were Runes and Swastikas. So basically when he was a Kid he saw how "trendy" it was, and that's why he ended up using it. That said, definitely gonna look into Saxon Cremation Urns and Swastikas, so thanks for sharing!

See my Comment above regarding the Swastika in German History. We did use that for hundreds of Years as well, but it only got extra "trendy" after Archeologists here found Germanic Artifacts with Swastikas in the late 1800s, which is also how a certain Führer found out about it. There is this Myth that he "stole it from Hinduism" but that's false. He just grew up right after those Archeologists found Germanic Artifacts with Swastikas on them in the late 1800s, which created a Craze of Runes and Swastikas a Jewelry etc. I got no Idea why the Finnish Airforce used it, but it assume similar Reasons, the Swastika was a Symbol all around the World even 1000 Years ago

The ᛊ or ᛋ rune was actually originally named after the sun (Sól in Old Norse, Sigel in Old English). In Lists's Armanen rune system, it was renamed as Sig (sounding like _Sieg_ "victory"), possibly because of a misinterpretation of the Old English name. Might also be inspired by the Old Norse concept of victory runes (sigrún) and the personal Name Sigrún.

The Tyr rune looks a lot like the "broad arrow" or "crows foot" symbol used to mark British military equipment. How far back does that convention go and is there any connection to it and the tyr rune?
@wolfmauler
@wolfmauler 6 дней назад
It's unfortunately not related to to the Tíw rune. (The English name, as in Tíw's Day) It's a simplified version of a heraldic arrowhead from the 1300's, adopted for Royal Ordinance. So, stamped on ammunition etc, in a nod to the ammo of the Medieval period. That's the best answer imo.

Thankyou ! I was looking for this comment as I had also written a comment about having seen it on all sorts of British Military stuff, from water canteens to ammo boxes. I always presumed it was used because it was also the rune associated with a "Warrior" , but that was just my presumption. Now I know the exact reason, thankyou.

@renebatsch2555
@renebatsch2555 2 дня назад
@@cannotfindmyshoes3 Would having a upright tree within a circle say, 'ever-lasting life', or 'eternal life'? That would be the proper way: Positive, living peace. The 'peace' emblem also corresponds with semaphore (N,D), and also looks like a stick-man lying down - arms outstretched out in hopeless resignation. It was meant a bold, ugly and shocking symbol, as during it's premiere at a U.K anti-nuclear rally. I believe the author of the symbol saw youth starting to to wear it and he tried to have it reoriented, but it was too late; It became cultural. The symbol would be fitting on high-power ordinance weapons - bold, ugly white on black. "Peace, man - Eternal death, man ..." I have seen the work of children being encouraged to paint the eternal-death symbols on school picnic tables in rainbow, and it creeps me the hell out !

Its also interesting that the symbol, coincidentally in skipperthebarts profile picture, for paramedics, is also one of the runes. Another random thought, the pagan symbol of life, and death, are very close to being crosses, a symbol which also means life and salvation, or death and satanism, in the same respective orientations.

When it comes to runes, it is always a tricky subject. Around me there are several villages and cities with the Wolfsangel as or in their sigil. One city dates back to the 9th century, another to the 12th. Though it doesn't say when the Wolfsangel became their actual sigil. Propably a few hundred years later. It is sad that those very old symbols will forever be associated with the darkest time and worst ideology in human history. Brilliant! Glad you are here Mark. The view these days is to forget history, never mind that, they say. Two very important words for everyone to keep in mind is,”historical empathy “. In order to judge the past, one must hop into a Time Machine of sorts, see the sights, smell the smells, and live in that time period in order to understand the mindsets and atmosphere and politics at that time.
